Kara Lea Hillier Scholarship Award
WinnerBeing selected as a scholarship recipient in honor of Kara Lea Hillier would be both an incredible honor and responsibility that I would carry with pride. For me, receiving this scholarship would represent me more than just financial support for my education. It would symbolize a commitment to pursue teaching with passion and dedication. As someone planning on majoring in education, this recognition would motivate me than I already am to am to become the type of teacher who makes a difference in students’ lives.
One of the reasons I am drawn to education is the role that teachers play in shaping students’ confidence, growth, and future opportunities. Every student believes in a teacher who believes in them and encourages them to reach their full potential. Being a scholarship recipient would remind me that other believe in my ability to become that type of educator. It would push me to approach my studies, student teaching, and future classroom with dedication, knowing I am representing the values connected to Soto’s legacy.
Inside the classroom, I would represent Hillier’s legacy by creating an environment where every student feels supported and motivated to learn. Education is not only about teaching academic content, but also about building relationships and helping students develop confidence in themselves. I hope to build a classroom culture that encourages curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. By listening to other students and valuing their perspectives, I would strive to make learning meaningful and engaging for everyone.
I also want to be a teacher who inspires students to believe in their own abilities. Many students face challenges that can make school feel overwhelming, and a supportive teacher can make a big difference in how they view themselves and what they’re capable of. By showing patience and encouragement, I hope to help students overcome obstacles and realize their potential. Carrying forward Hillier’s legacy means striving to positively influence students’ lives not only academically but personally as well.
Receiving this scholarship would also remind me of the importance of giving back. Education has the power to transform lives, and teachers are in a unique position to help shape the next generation. If selected as a recipient, I would view it as an opportunity to continue the influence of someone who made a meaningful difference in my education. Carrying that forward would inspire me to remain committed to lifelong learning and continuously improve as an educator.
Overall, being chosen as a recipient of this scholarship in honor of Kara Lea Hillier would reinforce my dedication to becoming a compassionate, hardworking, and impactful teacher. I would strive to honor her legacy by supporting students, contributing positively to my school community, and remembering how much of a difference I can make. Through my work inside and outside the classroom, I hope to continue the spirit of dedication and care that this scholarship represents.
Hearts to Serve, Minds to Teach Scholarship
Teaching, to me, is far more than delivering a curriculum. It is a commitment to shaping lives, building confidence, and creating spaces where students feel seen and supported. My belief in education as a force for good has grown through the ways I’ve served and led within my community, each experience showing me how powerful it is when someone takes the time to guide, encourage, and care.
Much of my service has come through working with younger students. For the past three years, I’ve coached children from kindergarten through sixth grade in lacrosse and basketball, as well as mentoring kids through my job as a Chili Recreation camp counselor. Whether I was helping a camper overcome homesickness, organizing games to keep everyone included, or teaching a young athlete how to believe in their own progress, these moments taught me that kids thrive when adults model patience and positivity. Even my participation in a long-running bottle and can drive, going door-to-door to collect recycling, strengthened my understanding that service is built from small, consistent efforts to make a community better.
Leadership has also shaped the kind of educator I hope to become. As a Student Council Treasurer, I’ve learned responsibility through planning fundraisers and balancing class accounts. Leading monthly meetings taught me how to communicate clearly and keep group goals at the center of every decision. As captain of my varsity soccer team for three years, I learned what it means to support others not just when things are going well, but in challenging moments too. I was responsible for helping coaches communicate with teammates, organizing team events, and building unity among players with different personalities and strengths. These roles pushed me to lead with empathy, a skill essential to teaching.
My extracurricular life has also shown me how powerful guidance can be. Whether competing in varsity soccer, basketball, or lacrosse while maintaining a 90+ GPA in-season, or participating in multiple school bands, I’ve learned how important encouragement and structure are for students balancing many responsibilities. Being recognized with awards such as First Team All County, MVP, and High Honor Roll every quarter since 2019 reflected not just my hard work, but the support systems I had around me. I want to recreate that for my future students, a place where effort is celebrated, strengths are noticed, and challenges are shared rather than faced alone.
As a teacher, I want my students to gain more than knowledge. I hope they leave my classroom believing in themselves, knowing their ideas matter, and feeling comfortable enough to take risks. I want them to experience the same kind of compassion, consistency, and encouragement that shaped me, the kind that helps young people grow not only academically, but as human beings.
Overall, teaching is an act of service. It is a chance to lead with heart, think with purpose, and use education to uplift others. My experiences have prepared me for that, and I’m ready to help future students discover their potential both inside and beyond the classroom.
