Bio

I grew up in a single-mother household where financial instability was a daily reality. There were times we relied on free school lunches, worried about rent, and had to choose necessities over comfort. Watching my mother work tirelessly and sacrifice her own needs shaped my understanding of responsibility, resilience, and perseverance. From a young age, I knew nothing would be handed to me, and that belief became the foundation of my work ethic. Living in poverty also exposed me to the healthcare system in a deeply personal way. I saw how financial limitations affected access to care, how people delayed treatment because of cost, and how overwhelming medical environments can feel when you lack resources or advocacy. Those experiences stayed with me and sparked my desire to pursue medicine. I do not want to become a doctor for prestige, but to be someone who understands what it feels like to sit on the other side of the exam table feeling unheard or powerless. My background fuels my drive to break cycles of hardship through education and service. Every class, late night of studying, and challenge I face is motivated by where I come from and where I am going. Becoming a doctor is not just a career goal, but a commitment to provide compassionate care and advocate for patients who need it most.

As a first generation college student raised by a single mother, education has never felt abstract to me. It has always been personal. I grew up understanding that opportunity is fragile and that stability is something you fight to build. Watching my mom work tirelessly to provide for me shaped the way I see responsibility, resilience, and service. It taught me that success is not just about personal achievement, but about lifting others once you have the strength to do so. I earned my associate’s degree while still in high school, which allowed me to accelerate my academic path and begin pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Being ahead academically is not something I take lightly. It represents years of discipline and sacrifice. As a student entering a rigorous engineering program, I am driven by a desire to merge innovation with compassion. I am fascinated by the intersection of medicine and technology because it offers tangible ways to improve and extend lives. Whether through developing medical devices, improving diagnostic tools, or contributing to research that advances patient care, I want my work to directly impact people who are vulnerable and in need. My long term goal is to attend medical school. I want to become a physician who not only treats illness but also understands the systems that shape patient outcomes. Biomedical engineering provides me with a foundation to think critically about problem solving, design, and efficiency. Medicine will allow me to apply those skills in a deeply human context. I am particularly interested in serving underserved communities, where access to quality healthcare is often limited. Growing up in a household that qualified for free lunch gave me firsthand insight into how financial barriers can shape health, education, and opportunity. I want to be part of the solution that narrows those gaps. Beyond academics, I am committed to leadership and service. I plan to pursue internships, volunteer opportunities, and certifications that will allow me to serve my campus and community in meaningful ways. I believe that impact is built through consistent action rather than occasional gestures. By engaging in research, emergency response initiatives, and community outreach, I hope to contribute not only as a student but as an active member of the environments I am part of. Making a positive impact on the world begins with preparation. It requires education that challenges you and experiences that humble you. Through biomedical engineering and eventually medicine, I aim to develop the knowledge and empathy necessary to improve healthcare systems and patient outcomes. My background has given me resilience. My education is giving me direction. Together, they form the foundation of a career dedicated to service, innovation, and meaningful change.

Spanning from April to December of 2023, I held a volunteer position at the charity Sending Sunshine. At the time, the position meant easy, online volunteer hours for my high school resume; however, after serving with the charity for a short time, the impact was far more. Sending Sunshine’s mission is to help seniors suffering from “senior isolation”, a term I had never heard before. After being made aware that millions of seniors around the world suffer from feeling depressed and alone in nursing homes, I knew I had to help. While my position with the charity was a secretary and social media position, I also started volunteering by writing cards to be distributed to those affected seniors. To date, Sending Sunshine has distributed 284,742 cards and it means the world to me that I was able to be a part of that. Being a part of something great like that is what drives me to serve my community on a daily basis. This is why I will be pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering and why I wish to attend medical school; being a part of a team that saves lives will be the most rewarding feeling.

With the rising cost of tuition, housing, and even just living as a whole, saving money has been a frequent topic of discussion throughout my entire generation. This has led to the idea that college might be a waste of money and time. In a society in which wasting money would be detrimental, this statement causes a lot of stir-up. However, to promoters of that idea, I say that not only is college not a waste of time and money, but it is crucial that one graduates college to comfortably survive. It is easy to look at the richest of the rich who didn’t attend college and think that if they can do it, then so can you. Maybe you can; however, it is highly unlikely. One can pick out certain examples to make any point they want, but going by the standard facts and figures of everyone, college graduates tend to make more money than those who do not attend college. In addition, college graduates can typically retire comfortably long before those without a degree. How can one say that college is a waste of time and money when, in the long run, it will only give you more money and save you valuable time working? Even without the facts and figures, how can one look at the world’s heroes like Malala, who took a bullet fighting for education, and say that they fight without a cause? Education will always be worth it no matter the time or money. This is why If I could change one negative thing in my environment, I would change the negative connotation associated with college and paying for it. I wish not a single person in the world would ever have the thought that pursuing higher education is not for them solely because of the cost. I want to try to spread the idea that college can be for everyone and that there is always going to be a way to pay for it, whether that looks like scholarships, grants, or even student loans. I can guarantee there would be more people pursuing a college degree if they only knew the financial aid provided everywhere for every little thing. Shifting the connotation of college and paying for it to a positive one, for even just one person, could change everything. It is my generation that needs to be more in the know about college financial aid than any because we are the future of the world.
