      Honorable Shawn Long Memorial Scholarship
My educational goal is to obtain a duel bachelor degree in accounting and finance. Soon after I earn my bachelor’s degree, I want to pursue a master’s degree in accounting so I can take the CPA exam. I am currently taking accounting courses at Hempfield Highschool where I have a GPA of 3.6. Once I have my CPA, my career goal is to open up an office to collaborate with clients on the benefits of budgeting, planning using long term capital gains to grow investments while leaving a portion of their income to help a charity of their choice. One part of my practice I would like to have been working with young families, especially families with children with disabilities. The families with children or siblings with disabilities have a heavy burden placed upon them. I would like to educate them that with proper planning it is not something that should worry them. My brother is on the autism spectrum where my father has talked with me numerous times that once he and my mother have passed, I would be responsible to manage his funds to make sure he is okay. Luckily, my brother is highly functioning and doing amazing things in school, but other families are not as lucky. My parents have raised me to give back to the community where I frequently have donated my time at Blessings of Hope packaging food for families in need. They wanted to open my eyes to understand that there are people in need. My parents frequently donate to numerous local charities while my mom is an active volunteer with local charities including United Disability Services where she continues to be a volunteer and was awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2021. If you ever got your Christmas presents wrapped at the gift wrap booth at Park City mall, you may have bumped into her. The cost of college with my educational path to get 150 credits (master’s degree) required to sit for the CPA exam is daunting. I understand getting the best training and education does have a significant cost associated with it similar to the path that Judge Long had with obtaining his law degree. Where I feel that I can give back to so many families in the future is with the education and training I am about to undertake over the next five years. Most people would not think that becoming an Accountant would be a career that would give back so much to so many. I would disagree because working with families on proper planning, budgeting, and investing I would say that I can do as much or more to help families sleep at night; especially a family with a child with a disability to address their fear when they are on longer around to take care of them. I would be honored if you awarded me this scholarship and hope to honor Judge Long by accomplishing my goal and beginning to pay it forward to so many. Sincerely, Carter James Mack
