Bio

Hi, my name is Carolyn Johnson. My life goals are to get into a college that fits me and to study something I am passionate about, which is social work or speech-language pathology. Since I was in middle school I always wanted to be able to help kids whether that was emotionally, mentally, or physically. Because as a kid there wasn't a lot of help for me in those ways.

A change I would like to make in the world is for more people to live out the values of love. These values of love are forgiveness, honesty, kindness, compassion, trust, empathy, etc. Why? In this world, which seems to be caused by violence, hate, and selfishness, these values can help us become better people ourselves, create a safe and supportive environment, and help us build stronger connections with others. It might seem like an impossible dream but if more people consciously tried to live out these values consistently, we could create a more compassionate and empathetic world. These values of love all share a common theme: putting the needs of others before our own. For example, Forgiveness allows us to let go of grudges and move on from past hurts. Honesty builds trust and promotes deeper connections with others. Kindness and compassion are the antidotes to selfishness and cruelty, and they help us see humanity in everyone we encounter. Empathy allows us to understand the struggles of others and offer support and encouragement where needed most. In trying to make this change in the world, I first need to “Be the change you want to see in the world.” This famous quote is credited to Mahatma Gandhi, but its sentiment also resonates with biblical principles. In the book of Matthew, Jesus teaches, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. And in the book of 1 Corinthians, Apostle Paul mentions that “love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” Therefore, I am committed to living out these values of love in my daily life, so I can influence others to do the same. However, I understand that there will be obstacles I could face on my journey to inspire others to live out these values. One of the biggest challenges could be dealing with unresolved trauma, mental illness, and justifiable biases that prevent them from embracing the principle of love. It's important to recognize that individuals with mental health issues might find it difficult to be kind and extend love to others, as they are having a hard time caring and accepting themselves. But I must approach these situations with empathy and understanding, as I don’t know what someone might be going through. Instead of leaving them alone, I can offer support and kindness and help them see that there are people out there who care for them and help them see the value of living a life rooted in love.
