Caroline is a second-year graduate student at The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC), obtaining her Masters in Physician Assistant Practice. Caroline explains “limited resources, access, and provider awareness of social issues have all unintentionally resulted in many communities not receiving the healthcare services they need. I seek to combat this with a personal demonstration of provider awareness and care for marginalized communities.” Although not yet licensed, she has already begun to service this population by creating passion projects which consist of local tutoring, an all-women's book club, and organized day-outings with local South LA children. Caroline is also an active, inaugural member of the African Heritage Physician Assistant Student Interest Group (AHPA) at the University of Southern California. As the groups Community Event Organizer, she plans and coordinates panel discussions between African Heritage Physician Assistants (PA) and undergraduate students who desire to become PA’s. These events are created with efforts to bring more awareness to the profession, as well as the minority representation within the industry. In 5 years, her hope is to be a staple within the South LA community by providing her home as a safe space for children in the community. She seeks to create a home where locals come to feel seen, safe, and loved. She wants others to enter her future home and feel relieved that someone genuinely cares for them and the community.

  Mission:

  Downtown Los Angeles has been notorious as a location where homeless persons congregate and live. Consequently, this area is often neglected and overlooked. Growing up, I had close relatives who lived in this community and were without adequate resources. With them and others in mind, I partnered with a church in Long Beach to lessen the severity of this issue. Together, we collected lightly used clothing and new toiletries, contacted local restaurant donors for food donations, and retrieved those donations. All items were distributed on a weekly basis.

  Growing up, I vividly remember how excited I became when a young adult played with me, or took prolonged interest in me. For me, it was important that I offer this same bliss to other children. 2 years ago, I met 3 unrelated children and dedicated myself to be involved in their lives. With a posture of sincerity and genuineness, I voluntarily mentor them and sponsor monthly day trips around Southern California. Our activities have included birthday parties, parks, amusement parks, various cultural cuisines and college tours.

  Raised primarily by my father, there was much motherly wisdom that was not imparted to me. I became increasingly curious about womanhood in personal development, and interviewed others to determine how common my experience(s) were. I discovered that many female millennials desire to grow in their womanhood, but have few trusted mentors. Seeking answers, I read literature to assist me; The answers I found inspired me to partner with local Los Angeles homeowners, hosting book clubs that create a space for open discussions on womanhood.

  Mission:

  As a South LA resident, I witnessed many young single mothers raise, nurture and cultivate children alone. Oftentimes, with limited resources and assistance. In my former religious community, these individuals were silently distanced and shamed. I reflected on the consequences of this behavior, and was motivated to support these families with consistent compassion, genuinity, and support. By sponsoring events called “Mommy and Me”, single mothers have built community amongst each other and found much needed relativity.
