I am a high school senior who is interested in majoring in neuroscience with plans to attend medical school to become a psychiatrist. I have been involved with various community service organizations which have led me to this desire, one being my involvement with a local memory care facility. The brain fascinates me!

I have always been a person who navigates life with empathy and a deep sense of feeling. I like to think through and solve mentally challenging problems whether they are my own hardships or a friend’s who has asked for advice. I have a family member who has dealt with deep, mental health issues, one might say life-threatening. Watching this person work through and eventually overcome his struggles through specific medical and therapeutic channels has inspired me. Also, being able to see my friends overcome their fears and power through trials just by consolation and encouragement has been one of the most special parts of my life, and I wish to ground this support in scientific knowledge. I am intrigued by the brain, nervous system, and mind. This interest was sparked initially through my time playing hymns and carols on harp in memory care homes, watching the elderly residents remember songs from their childhood even though they had dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc. It was then further amplified by my time at the Tennessee Governor's School for the Sciences and Engineering. I was part of the chemistry cohort and had the opportunity to participate in research with the nanotechnology department regarding nanotechnology in pharmaceuticals, specifically pharmaceuticals that cross the blood-brain barrier. This hands-on experience allowed me to analyze drug delivery systems designed to bypass neurological defenses, sparking my fascination with how molecular engineering can completely change patient care. I want to become a physician and am interested in brain function because I want to use my future knowledge to the benefit of others. My desire is to become a psychiatrist who bridges the gap between science and compassion. Uniqueness and authenticity are what an efficient, cohesive community thrives on. I would like to give my patients hope for their lives and encourage them to share their valuable, individual perspectives with the world just as my family member has been able to do. His resilience transformed my perspective, proving that even the most challenging, internal battles can be won with the right support system. This experience has fueled my own commitment to advocating for mental health awareness and ensuring others find their own path to healing. I do not want people who have mental disorders to feel defeated by them. Through a career as a psychiatrist, I hope to help patients reshape their self-perception so that they see their value to society as a whole.
