Goellner Public Education Scholarship
From the moment I first experienced a teacher who truly believed in me, I began to understand how powerful education can be in shaping a student’s future. Having someone take the time to check on my progress, encourage me when I struggled, and celebrate my successes made a lasting impact on me. Those moments helped me realize that teaching is more than delivering lessons — it is about building trust, creating safe spaces, and helping students see their potential even when they may not see it themselves. This early experience planted the seed that eventually grew into my passion for pursuing a career in K-12 education.
Throughout my educational journey, I was fortunate to have teachers who consistently reached out to make sure I was successful. They offered academic support, guidance, and encouragement that helped me stay motivated. Their dedication showed me what it truly means to be an educator who cares about the whole student, not just their grades. Because of them, I learned the importance of patience, communication, and meeting students where they are. These experiences inspired me to want to provide that same level of support and encouragement to future students.
In addition to my personal experiences as a student, I have spent six years working in after-school and summer programs. During this time, I had the opportunity to mentor students, help with academic support, and build positive relationships with young people from different backgrounds. Working in these programs allowed me to see how important consistency, structure, and encouragement are in helping students succeed. I also had the chance to work alongside strong mentors and educators who modeled leadership, teamwork, and dedication to student success. These experiences helped me develop strong communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to support different learning styles.
For the past three years, I have also worked as a substitute teacher. This experience allowed me to learn from many different types of teachers, mentors, and camp counselors. Each classroom environment taught me something new about classroom management, lesson delivery, and building student relationships. Being mentored by educators with different teaching styles helped me become more flexible and confident in my ability to support students in various learning environments.
All of these experiences have shaped my aspiration to become a K-12 educator. My goal is to be the type of teacher who encourages, supports, and inspires students just like my teachers and mentors did for me. I want to help students build confidence in their abilities, develop a love for learning, and feel prepared for their futures. I am committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of students and contributing positively to the field of education through dedication, compassion, and lifelong learning.
Van's Sisters On Our Shoulders "SOS" Scholarship
From a young age, I have always found joy in helping others learn. As the oldest of five siblings, I naturally stepped into the role of a teacher and mentor in my family. Whether it was helping with homework, guiding through challenges, or encouraging them in their interests, I discovered early on that I had a passion for education. That passion has only grown stronger as I continue my journey to become an educator.
I am currently an Education major at Southern University at New Orleans, where I am building the knowledge and skills needed to inspire and support students in the classroom. In addition to my studies, I work as a substitute teacher, gaining valuable firsthand experience working directly with students of all ages and grade levels. I also serve as a Youth Development Professional at the Boys and Girls Club, where I mentor and guide children through academic support, extracurricular activities, and personal challenges. My work at the club is especially meaningful to me because I have been mentoring kids in my community since I was 16 years old. These roles have allowed me to grow as a leader and continue shaping the lives of young people in positive ways.
Outside of my professional roles, I stay committed to community service and leadership. As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I take part in service projects that give back to those in need. I also volunteer as a volleyball coach, helping kids not only develop athletic skills but also gain confidence, teamwork, and discipline. These experiences have confirmed my calling to dedicate my life to guiding young people.
My career goal is to become a teacher who creates a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment for all students. I want to be more than an educator, I want to be a role model who encourages students to believe in themselves, overcome challenges, and reach their full potential. In the long term, I also hope to contribute to programs that support at-risk youth and provide resources that help them succeed both inside and outside of school.
This scholarship would help me tremendously as I continue to work toward these goals. Balancing school, work, community service, and mentorship is a challenge, and financial support would allow me to focus more on my studies and professional growth. It would provide me with the opportunity to pursue my education with less stress and more dedication, bringing me closer to my dream of becoming the kind of teacher who makes a lasting difference in students’ lives.
