      English Teacher

Tim Gjoraas Science and Education Scholarship
Ever since I was a little girl, I have looked up to teachers. Whether it be elementary school, middle school, or high school, I have always admired their passion to educate the youth. Because of this, my major field of study is clear—English Secondary Education. Becoming a future educator absolutely thrills me. The thought of getting to shape students’ lives while transforming their academic abilities makes me so excited! If I can inspire or influence just a single student in my full career of being a teacher, I will have completed my life’s goal. I wish not only to teach, but to ignite their imagination and make them fall in love with learning. I aspire to be half as great as my English teachers, especially my AP Literature and Composition teacher. From their excitement about teaching to their knowledge regarding the subject, I cannot thank them enough for the impact they have made on my life. They have truly inspired me to become a teacher. They have fostered my writing skills and taught me to think critically—for there is a deeper meaning to everything. My generation has been swept up in a world of instant grammar checking and avoidance of reading a novel. I wish not only to educate students, but get them excited to compose essays and read classic novels that have shaped humanity. In order to become a teacher, it is imperative that one understands some students do not enjoy certain subjects. In today’s world, English has become students’ least favorite subject. In understanding this, I can tailor my teaching abilities to cater to all types of students, so that they may find a silver lining in taking an English class. Service and teaching go hand-in-hand. A teacher cannot fully educate a student without providing service towards them. I aspire to do whatever it takes to help a student reach their fullest potential. Whether this be by staying after school to clarify concepts or simply diving deeper in discussion, I will be able to aid in my student’s comprehension of the material. Believe me, I know being a high school English teacher is not glamorous. From grading hundreds of essays to discussing novels, this job can be overwhelming—yet I love it. High school students are figuring out who they are and who they want to be in life. This comes with a great deal of high school angst (I can confirm this as a previous high school student!). It was always my favorite teachers that would brighten my day with a simple smile at the door, and I wish to be the ray of light for students that feel in the dark. Therefore, I will be serving my students every day. My aspiration to become an English teacher grows with each passing day, and I am absolutely thrilled to be able to educate students while providing them with a comfortable environment to share their ideas. I hope my students will change the world, because, as cheesy as it sounds, education is the only weapon that has the power to truly change the world.
