Hi everyone, my name is Carly and thank you for visiting my profile! In August, I will be starting a concurrent enrollment ADN-BSN program at schools in Southern California. As a result of my prior education at the University of California, Riverside, I have a background in biology and applied statistics.
I am very passionate about the nursing field because it allows me to help others, while also allowing me to gain new and meaningful experiences. It is truly a rewarding profession, as you are able to meet individuals from various walks of life.
My life goals are to obtain my nursing degree and work at a local hospital, use my education and experience to serve the underserved, maintain a good work-life balance, and serve as a mentor for others.
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, playing with my dog, watching movies and shows, and going for walks.

Cindy J. Visser Memorial Nursing Scholarship
I was initially inspired to become a nurse during my childhood. My grandmother was diagnosed with throat cancer when I was in the first grade. My mom and I would often go to Tijuana to visit my grandmother in order to be there while she received medical care, help her pick up her prescriptions, and ultimately, to spend some quality time with her. Being present while my grandmother received medical care, whether it be at her doctor’s office or a hospital, introduced me to the field of medicine and showed me the true kindness and dedication that healthcare workers demonstrate on a daily basis. I realized that providing medical care also involves providing support for patients and their families during what are often some of the most difficult times for them. I noticed that the nurses at the hospital really took the time to talk to us and educate us regarding my grandmother’s illness. Not only this, but they’d also offer us water or snacks; they did their best to ensure that the hospital environment was comfortable for all three of us, while also providing their skills and expertise. I knew that this was something that I wanted to be able to do for people in the future. Several years later, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a free healthcare clinic located in San Bernardino, California. The clinic’s mission was to provide healthcare for uninsured and underserved patients in the Inland Empire region. Our patient population consisted of people from all walks of life. I was a part of the clinic for four years and learned a variety of skills as a result. Some of the skills I acquired include the following: being able to use an electronic health record system, taking patients’ vitals, educating patients on various health topics, and sending lab order forms electronically. I also served as a translator for our Spanish-speaking patients. My experiences at the clinic truly solidified my goal to become a nurse. I enjoyed learning new skills and putting them to use, while also being able to work with others to empathize with our patients.
Throughout my career, I hope to accomplish various goals. One of my goals is to carry the values and traits that Cindy exemplified throughout her career. I will strive to have empathy and compassion for my patients, so that I can establish a connection with them and provide them with the care they deserve. I also hope to exhibit a high degree of professionality, in which I will accomplish all of my tasks in the workplace, while also working as a team with other healthcare professionals. Another goal I have is to obtain either a master’s or doctorate degree so that I can become a nurse practitioner and open a free healthcare clinic in the Inland Empire. I want to give back to the community I grew up in. I feel as though opening a free healthcare clinic will allow me to provide care for individuals in need, while also offering learning experiences for those who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Furthermore, I would like to have a good work-life balance, so that I can spend sufficient time with my family and continue to pursue my hobbies. Some of my hobbies are photography, watching movies/shows, and going thrifting. I am confident that a career in nursing will allow me to accomplish my career goals while also being able to take time for myself and my family. I look forward to working in such a rewarding field!
