A Journey of Faith and Purpose:   In the “City of Good Neighbors” Buffalo, New York, a young boy named Carlos began his journey. Coming from “La Isla del Encanto” Puerto Rico Carlos faced the challenge of adapting to a new culture, language and environment. But there’s a thing, at a very young age Carlos was diagnosed with autism, a condition that made social interactions and communication a struggle. Imagine being in a new place, surrounded by people you don’t know but also can’t understand due to the language barrier.   First day of school came, he was scared, how was he supposed to do this, he was only nine, a poor nine-year-old that felt alone and isolated. His autism was making it difficult. Months passed and Carlos kept struggling but there was one thing that was going to change everything for him. He became involved in a local church that not only nurtured his spirituality but also fostered friendships that transcended his earlier insolation.   At four years old Carlos began playing baseball back in Puerto Rico. He was a completely different child when he played baseball, he was able to connect with the coaches and teammates. Baseball became an anchor in his life. His family was very united and they all tried to help him achieve the goals his was setting for himself.   As he navigated high school, Carlos found support through a community that embraced him for who he was. Teachers recognized his potential and encourage him to chase his aspirations. Carlos was growing, playing his favorite sport. It was on the diamond that he could express himself freely, where the rules of the game provided structure and the thrill of competition fueled his spirit. Guided by his faith, he believed God had a purpose for him. This belief became a source of strength, propelling him to pursue his dreams. With every prayer, he felt closer to understanding his purpose and the dreams that God had placed in his heart.   Moreover, during his high school years Carlos innate curiosity about people’s motivations and behaviors. He was 16 when his family went through a diffcult situation. He wanted to help more than he was able to, this opened more interest in Psychology. He is particularly drawn to the idea of unraveling the complexities of mental health. Carlos is committed to fostering empathy and awareness around mental health issues, hoping to contribute to a more compassionate and informed society.   Now, as Carlos stands at the edge of adulthood is full of hope and determination. He started using the skills he learned in baseball in his day to day. It was hard but he learned to believe in himself. Carlos envisions a future where he can use his degree in psychology to make a remarkable difference. His goal is to create a safe space for people, helping them develop coping strategies and resilience. He puts every challenge in God’s hands and put faith on his dreams.
