      American Dream Scholarship for Nurses
One of the greatest challenges I have overcome is rebuilding my professional life after immigrating from Cuba, where I had earned my degree and worked as a doctor. Leaving my country meant leaving behind not only my home, but also the career I had dedicated years of study, sacrifice, and passion to pursuing. When I arrived in the United States, I quickly realized that my medical credentials would not transfer, and I would need to start my journey again from the beginning. The language barrier, cultural differences, and financial pressure made the transition even more difficult. This challenge affected me both personally and professionally. At first, it was discouraging to feel like I had lost something so important to my identity. But the experience also pushed me to grow in ways I never expected. Learning English strengthened my communication skills and taught me patience. Adjusting to a new healthcare system broadened my perspective on patient care. Most importantly, starting over helped me rediscover why I chose healthcare in the first place: to help people, no matter the circumstances. My decision to study nursing came from a desire to stay connected to that purpose. Nursing allows me to combine my medical background with a more hands-on, patient-centered approach. The journey has not been easy, but every challenge has made me stronger, more resilient, and more compassionate. Overcoming this obstacle has taught me to persevere through adversity and to approach every situation with determination and humility. I believe I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because my story reflects commitment, dedication, and a genuine desire to serve others. I am working hard to succeed academically while adapting to a new country and supporting myself financially. This scholarship would ease the financial burden of continuing my education and allow me to focus more fully on becoming the best nurse I can be. My long-term goal is to work in community or family health, serving underserved populations, including immigrants who face many of the same challenges I once did. I want to use my education to advocate for equitable, compassionate care and to be a voice for patients who may feel unheard. Overcoming the challenge of starting over has shaped me into someone who does not give up. It is this resilience, passion for healthcare, and commitment to helping others that make me a strong candidate for this scholarship.
      Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Education has always been the foundation that shapes my goals and fuels my determination, but its meaning has evolved throughout my life. Growing up in Cuba, education was both a privilege and a responsibility. Becoming a doctor allowed me to understand the profound impact that knowledge, compassion, and perseverance can have on the lives of others. Medicine taught me not only how to diagnose and treat, but also how to listen—to the fears, hopes, and stories of patients who often had limited access to care. My early career helped me discover my purpose: to serve, advocate, and uplift those who feel unseen. When I immigrated to the United States, I carried that purpose with me, but I also faced the painful realization that I would need to rebuild my professional life from the ground up. The transition demanded humility, patience, and strength. The greatest challenge I faced was not just learning a new language or adapting to a new culture, but accepting that the years of education and experience I had worked so hard to earn would not immediately translate into my new reality. I was starting from zero again—yet I refused to let that discourage me. Beginning my journey in nursing has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Nursing is not simply a continuation of my medical background; it is a profession that aligns deeply with my values. While medicine taught me the science of healing, nursing has taught me the art of care—how to build trust, advocate fiercely, and support the whole person, not just their diagnosis. It has given me a renewed sense of direction and a deeper understanding of how powerful compassionate care can be. Throughout my nursing studies, I have faced challenges that tested my resolve. Balancing work, school, and adapting to life in a new country has required long nights, countless hours of studying, and continuous self-belief. Yet each challenge has strengthened me. Learning English in a medical context was especially difficult, but it pushed me to develop new communication skills and to become more empathetic toward patients who struggle to express themselves in unfamiliar environments. Every obstacle has shaped me into a stronger, more understanding, and more dedicated healthcare provider. My decision to pursue nursing is also rooted in my desire to give back to the community that welcomed me. I have seen firsthand the disparities that exist within the U.S. healthcare system—particularly for immigrants, minorities, and underserved populations. Many people face the same barriers I once faced: language difficulties, fear of seeking help, lack of insurance, and limited access to culturally sensitive care. My background allows me to connect with these individuals on a personal level, and my education equips me to advocate for them professionally. With this scholarship, I hope to continue my education and expand the impact I can make. My long-term goal is to become an advanced practice nurse, working in community health or family practice, where I can serve patients who often fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. I want to help create a future where high-quality care is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background, income, or immigration status. I believe that healthcare providers have a unique opportunity to bridge cultural gaps, reduce disparities, and empower vulnerable communities—and I am committed to being part of that change. Beyond clinical care, I also hope to use my education to inspire others who feel discouraged by the challenges of starting over. My journey has taught me that education is not just about gaining knowledge; it is about finding confidence, building resilience, and discovering new possibilities. I want to demonstrate to others—especially immigrants and first-generation students—that it is never too late to pursue their dreams. If my story can motivate even one person to continue their education or believe in their potential, then every struggle I have faced will have been worthwhile. Education has shaped my goals by continuously broadening my perspective. It has shown me that success is not defined by where we begin, but by our willingness to keep moving forward despite the obstacles in our path. My experiences in Cuba taught me how to serve with limited resources; my journey in the United States has taught me how to adapt, persevere, and grow. Nursing now brings these lessons together, giving me the tools to build a future where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. This scholarship would not only support my education—it would honor the sacrifices, dreams, and hard work that have carried me to this moment. It would help me continue transforming challenges into opportunities and turn my passion for healthcare into lasting impact. I am committed to rising higher, not just for myself, but for the communities I serve and the future I hope to help create.
