Bio

Before I learned to read or write, I drew stories. I started drawing to express myself when I couldn’t do so verbally. With the characters and their narratives, I could communicate with the people around me and express my ideas. Drawing allowed me to think creatively and understand the world around me. It allowed me to bring the world of characters swirling in my mind into the outside world. Since then, storytelling has become an essential part of my identity. I spend a lot of time creating and drawing. I studied sculpture, painting, drawing, and both 2-D and 3-D digital art in high school and at a nearby community college. I joined Monterey Youth Art to gain more hands-on experience in an art studio. I formed connections with other aspiring artists and learned from more seasoned artists. At Reed College, I continue to take art classes. My major is Film and Media Studies because of my passion for creating and visualising stories. I am also a Zine intern, helping curate the college's collection of small-circulation, self-published publications and helping organise an annual Zine Fest. I also help students create and publish their zines. My art is focused on hand-drawn graphic novels and computer animation, and I am learning videography, editing, and digital and analogue photography. I am fascinated with how stories are told through a camera lens. After Reed, I plan to enrol in an MFA graduate programme focusing on creative writing, animation, and filmmaking, where I can learn and experiment with various storytelling techniques from conception to post-production.

As an artist, my ability to create is a vital part of who I am. From a young age, I faced challenges with developmental milestones. I began drawing to express myself. Even before I could read or write, I was illustrating stories—translating the world I saw and imagined into images. Through characters and their stories, I communicated with the world around me and expressed my ideas. Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by the natural world and the characters that inhabit my imagination. Art has always been my way of thinking creatively, understanding my surroundings, and sharing that understanding with others. Drawing and painting help me break down complex concepts. They enable me to better understand both the external world and the world within my mind. They foster creative thinking, problem-solving, and perceiving the world in my unique way. Drawing, crafting, and writing take up a significant part of my time. I have studied sculpture, drawing, painting, and digital art in both 2-D and 3-D formats. I joined the Monterey Youth Art Collective in 2021 to gain hands-on experience in an art studio. There, I developed relationships with other aspiring artists and benefited from mentorship by local, established artists. I use various visual media—drawing, painting, and photography—to express myself. My creative practice allows me to connect deeply with both the natural environment and the emotional landscapes of people and cultures. I am particularly inspired by two themes: environmental preservation and cultural identity. My interest in environmental art was sparked by the work of Hayao Miyazaki. His ability to weave environmental themes into fantastical stories showed me how powerful art can be as a tool for change. In 2023, I volunteered at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, working directly on conservation and sustainability efforts. This experience strengthened my commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and raising public awareness through art. My goal is to make art that raises public awareness of environmental issues. As an African American artist, I’m also deeply moved by the resilience of minority communities in the face of systemic injustice. I believe art has the power to build identity, amplify voices, and strengthen communities. This belief has guided my work as a content editor for SOCUReceipt, a student-led journal that uplifts minority art and perspectives; as a peer mentor for first-year students of color; and as a zine intern producing publications centered on underrepresented narratives. Majoring in Film and Media Studies allows me to merge my passion for storytelling with my technical skills. After graduation, I plan to pursue an interdisciplinary master’s degree in mixed media art, filmmaking, and creative writing. My goal is to merge storytelling with social awareness—to create works that inspire, inform, and empower.
