Katherine Vogan Springer Memorial Scholarship
Being in speech and debate has helped me in so many ways, but one of the biggest is how it’s prepared me to share my Christian faith. Through debating tough topics and giving speeches under pressure, I’ve learned how to communicate clearly, think critically, and stand firm in what I believe—all skills that are just as important when talking to others about faith.
One of the biggest things speech and debate taught me is how to explain and defend my beliefs. In debate, I’ve had to build strong arguments, back them up with evidence, and respond to counterarguments on the spot. That experience has helped me when talking about Christianity because it’s taught me how to answer tough questions. If someone asks, “How do you know God is real?” or “Why do you believe the Bible?” I don’t just freeze up. Instead, I can respond thoughtfully, using logic and examples to explain my faith in a way that makes sense.
Debate has also made me a better listener. A lot of people assume debating is just about proving the other person wrong, but that’s not true. If you don’t listen to what your opponent is actually saying, you’ll miss the real argument and lose. The same goes for talking about faith. Instead of just trying to "win" a conversation, I’ve learned to really hear people out and understand where they’re coming from. That way, when I share my faith, it’s not just about proving a point—it’s about having a meaningful conversation.
Another skill debate has given me is the ability to stay calm under pressure. There have been times in competition when I’ve been asked a question I didn’t expect, and I had to think fast. The same thing happens in real life when someone challenges my faith or asks something deep. Thanks to debate, I don’t panic. I take a moment to think, then respond with confidence instead of stumbling over my words.
I’ve also learned that persuasion isn’t about arguing—it’s about connection. In debate, you don’t convince someone by being aggressive; you do it by making logical, well-thought-out points and delivering them in a way that’s respectful. That’s exactly how I try to approach conversations about faith. If I come across as pushy or defensive, people shut down. But if I’m kind, patient, and willing to have a real discussion, they’re way more open to hearing what I have to say.
Finally, being in speech and debate has made me realize just how powerful words are. The way I say something can completely change how someone receives it. This reminds me of Proverbs 18:21: “The tongue has the power of life and death.” That verse has stuck with me because it’s so true—not just in debate but in sharing my faith. The way I talk about Jesus matters, and I want to do it in a way that encourages people, not pushes them away.
Overall, speech and debate have given me the tools to communicate my faith with confidence, clarity, and kindness. I’ve learned how to defend my beliefs, listen to others, stay calm under pressure, and share my faith in a way that actually connects with people. More than anything, though, I’ve learned that conversations about God aren’t about "winning"—they're about planting seeds, showing love, and trusting that God will work in people’s hearts.

Rev. and Mrs. E B Dunbar Scholarship
As a Filipino-American high school senior, my journey toward higher education has been filled with challenges. Growing up as a first-generation student in a family that immigrated from the Philippines, I often felt pressure to succeed while grappling with self-doubt. Balancing schoolwork with my introverted personality made it difficult to connect with others and embrace new experiences.
One of the most significant moments that shaped my perspective was my time at North Carolina's Governor's School. When I first arrived, I was incredibly nervous and felt out of place. However, during the first week, I challenged myself to talk to at least one new person each day, and I found it exhilarating! I met many interesting individuals and learned from their diverse experiences. Yet, by the second and third weeks, I reverted to my introverted habits, isolating myself and playing video games instead of socializing. This behavior deepened my feelings of loneliness and regret.
The turning point came during the Governor's School Dance. That night was special because it was our last big gathering before everyone had to leave. I finally let my guard down, allowing myself to be silly and enjoy the moment with my friends. When the night ended and everyone started saying their goodbyes, I felt overwhelmed with emotion. While my friends were tearing up, I initially felt numb. It wasn’t until I sat with a few friends reminiscing that everything hit me. I realized how much time I had wasted by not connecting with others. For the first time in years, I openly expressed my feelings, and my friends reassured me that it was okay to be vulnerable.
These experiences taught me resilience and the value of stepping outside my comfort zone. As I pursue my education in engineering and finance, I want to carry this lesson with me. My goal is to give back to my community, especially to other first-generation students who may feel lost, like I once did.
