My Passion for Special Education
Teaching is not just about transferring knowledge but also helping students discover their strengths, identities, and potential. In special education, this is particularly profound. Professor Harold Bloom's statement—"the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her presence,"—speaks to the idea that education should empower students to recognize their worth, capabilities, and role in the world.
The journey of students with special needs is a unique one. They face challenges that can make traditional learning environments difficult, but this does not diminish their potential for success. As a special education teacher, my mission is to create a space where each student feels seen, valued, and capable of achieving their version of success. I will guide them towards self-awareness and confidence through individualized instruction, encouragement, and adaptive strategies, recognizing and celebrating their unique journey.
How I Will Accomplish This
To help my students experience their sense of presence, I will:
Foster Self-Discovery: I will highlight each student's strengths and interests, showing them they have a voice and unique contributions to make.
Create an Inclusive and Supportive Environment: A classroom should be a place of safety and encouragement where every child feels they belong.
Use Adaptive and Engaging Teaching Methods: Every student learns differently, so I will tailor lessons to meet their needs, ensuring they can access and engage with the material meaningfully.
Encourage Independence and Self-Advocacy: Teaching students to advocate for themselves and develop life skills will help them recognize their abilities and potential.
Celebrate Progress: Every achievement, big or small, deserves recognition. I will reinforce their sense of accomplishment and presence in the world by celebrating growth.
A Special Fairy Tale: The Lightkeeper's Gift
Once upon a time, in the heart of the Enchanted Valley, there was a hidden school where children with unique gifts lived in the shadows, unsure of their magic. Each child had a spark inside them, but they had been told for so long that their light was different, or not bright enough, that they had forgotten how to shine. It was in this valley that you, the educators, parents, and advocates, played a crucial role in helping these children find their inner glow.
One day, a traveler named Liora, the Lightkeeper, arrived at the valley. She had heard of these extraordinary children and vowed to help them find their inner glow. With a lantern in hand, she gathered the children and whispered, "Inside each of you is a light unlike any other. The world needs your glow."
One by one, she guided them through the Path of Self-Discovery—a magical journey where each child faced a challenge that would help them see their true power. A boy who struggled to read found his voice in storytelling, weaving beautiful tales from his imagination. A girl who was afraid to speak found courage in music, her melodies filling the valley with hope. A child who had trouble making friends discovered the magic of kindness, bringing joy to all who met them.
With every step, Liora's lantern grew brighter, not because of her magic but because of the children's. They had found their presence, purpose, and place in the world. And as they stood together, their collective light was so brilliant that the valley was never dark again.
Liora smiled and said, "You have always been bright enough. You just needed to see it for yourselves."
And so, the children of the Enchanted Valley lived boldly, proudly, and happily ever after—knowing that their light would never fade.
Jeanne Kramme Fouke Scholarship for Future Teachers
From an early age, I have felt a profound calling to teaching—not merely as a career but as a meaningful vocation that allows me to influence others positively. The opportunity to inspire, nurture, and guide young minds through their educational journeys fills me with immense joy and purpose.
Teaching involves more than just imparting knowledge; it is about igniting curiosity in my students, building their self-confidence, and fostering a genuine passion for learning. I aim to create a dynamic classroom environment where interactive discussions thrive, creativity is encouraged, and critical thinking skills are developed.
My heartfelt goal is cultivating a safe and welcoming atmosphere where every student feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or abilities. I strive to empower my students by acknowledging their strengths and helping them overcome challenges, enabling them to reach their fullest academic and personal potential. By doing so, I aim to inspire a lifelong love of learning that extends beyond the classroom walls.
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is the profound opportunity to make a significant difference in a student's life. Whether it's through helping a struggling learner uncover their hidden strengths in subjects they find challenging, fostering a love for learning that encourages students to chase their dreams with passion, or being a steadfast source of emotional and academic support, teachers occupy a vital role in shaping the future of each student. I aspire to be a mentor for my students—a guiding force that imparts knowledge and inspires resilience and self-confidence. I envision creating a classroom environment where every student feels valued and empowered to express their ideas and ambitions, ultimately fostering a sense of belonging and purpose that lasts a lifetime.
A Teacher Who Changed My Life
I was fortunate to have a teacher who made a profound impact on my life—my high school English teacher, Mrs. Schafer. At a time when I lacked confidence in my abilities, they saw potential in me that I didn't see in myself. They challenged me to push beyond my comfort zone, encouraged my love for writing, and constantly reminded me that my voice and ideas mattered.
One particular moment stands out: I had written an essay I felt unsure about, but instead of dismissing it, my teacher took the time to provide thoughtful feedback and told me, "You have a perspective worth sharing—never stop using your voice." That simple statement changed how I saw myself; from that point forward, I believed in my ability to succeed.
That experience solidified my desire to become a teacher. I want to be the kind of educator who teaches, uplifts, and empowers students, just as my teacher did for me. By pursuing a career in teaching, I want to create a meaningful impact on the lives of my students and help them realize their potential.
