Bio

My name is Candace Harrison. I have always dreamt of positively impacting those around me. I have learned throughout my life that helping others is something I aspire to do for the ongoing future. Coming from a family that strives to help others has influenced my choice of career. By practicing kindness and generosity without expecting something in return, I hope to change the lives of children and adults who may be in a non-prosperous environment with my future involvement in and outside of public service. I currently attend Birmingham-Southern College studying to pursue a career in law by majoring in political science. During my studies I hope to gain more knowledge on the impact of politics in the law field and how said knowledge may help advance my career. While enrolled, I also hope to indulge in the many opportunities offered by this institution and eventually apply to law school to pursue my goal of becoming a civil rights attorney.

My name is Candace Harrison; I am a freshman at Birmingham-Southern College. Growing up, I listened to my parents talk about their struggles and how they wished to change past decisions. Hearing their stories and wishes inspired me to try my best in everything I do. In school, I always aspired to do my best in every subject. By doing so, I learned never to doubt my abilities and always try my best. My parents inspire me to be the best version of myself while challenging me to exceed every expectation no matter how difficult. The constant encouragement my parents provide and my desire to leave a positive impact on the world around me has been and continue to be my motivation for being the first in my family to attend college. I have always dreamt of making an impact on those around me. I have learned throughout my life that helping others is something I aspire to do for the ongoing future. Coming from a family that strives to help others has influenced my choice of career. By practicing kindness and generosity, I hope to change the lives of children and adults who may be in a non-prosperous environment through a career in law. My ultimate goal in life is to become a civil rights attorney after grad school. Seeing different incidents of injustice in the world around me has spiked my passion for making a difference. The world has so many wonderful opportunities for not only myself but new generations as well. I am beyond excited to watch me grow with it and see how my generation-and those to come-tackle future problems. I understand these are all things I could do without a college degree. However, I hope by attending college I can elevate my message higher than just a high school degree. Within the short time, I have been a BSC student, I have learned even more about myself which has only increased my drive to succeed. My parents always spoke about how they wished to attend college, but a lack of resources and support prevented them from doing so. I want to make them proud and capitalize on every opportunity they have given me over the past eighteen years. By persevering through even the hardest times, I hope to make them proud and give back to my community. Attending college has already provided me with so many opportunities I never thought I would have, and I look forward to continuing this journey.

Coming from a middle-class family, it would be challenging to financially support attending Birmingham-Southern College for the next four years. Since both my sister and I are attending college during the same year, it would be challenging for them to put us through school while also caring for their own needs. With Birmingham-Southern College being a private institution, the tuition and other expenses are far more than my family nor I can afford at this moment. My mother- a Holy Family Cristo Rey High School graduate- and my father- a Minor High School Graduate never attended college nor did my brother. Because of this, we lacked knowledge of college expenses and the overall college process. I am proud to represent my family as a first-generation college student this fall and hope to make them proud. My ultimate goal in life is to become a civil rights attorney while creating a better environment for future generations to come. Seeing different incidents of injustice in the world around me has spiked my passion for creating change. The world has so many amazing opportunities for not only myself but new generations as well. I am beyond excited to watch me grow with it and see how we as a whole tackle future problems. With this scholarship, I hope to relieve my family some stress that comes with financing college.
