I will be attending Duquesne University's 12-month Accelerated BSN program in August of 2022. I believe everybody is deserving of healthcare, including those who suffer from mental disabilities, which is why I want to work as a psychiatric nurse. Just because someone has a mental disability, does not make them any different from you or I. They need proper support and care to overcome and treat their disorder(s). With my Bachelor’s in Psychology, I believe I can give patients the tools they need to overcome mental obstacles. In my undergraduate education, I learned how to provide treatment and therapies needed for a wide array of mental disorders. Everyone is deserving of human connection and the right to health, which is why I want to work as a psychiatric nurse. As a nurse my goal is to be an advocate for patients. I want to be able to communicate patient’s wishes to physicians, teach them how to advocate for their own health, and help patients understand the medical terminology with their treatment. My parents divorced when I was 18 and due to the financial havoc that comes with divorce, I have not lived with or been financially supported by either of them since. I have currently been proactive in saving money by working as a personal trainer and nanny to pay for both my education and living expenses. I would benefit from a scholarship because it would allow me to pursue a fulfilling career in nursing, while not drowning in financial debt. Due to the intense pace of this program, I will be taking a leave of absence from work to solely focus on this nursing program.
