Hello!
My name is Camille Skiles and I am currently a Running Start Senior at Skagit Valley College. I am extremely passionate about social justice and graphic design. I am a Graphic Design Director and an Illustrator/Artist in another non-profit organization. I constantly try to better myself by reading and educating myself on current issues. I also try to do something about the inequalities set in our society. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire others and to create change through graphic design.
A long-term goal that I have is to work for a company that works to effectively create social change and that is environmentally sustainable. I want to break down barriers, and I want to show others that you can create change through art and design. That art can spark important conversations.

I am a part of a student-led non-profit organization called The Reclamation Project whose tagline is: "Fostering generations of informed, empowered, and anti-prejudiced people through education, advocacy, and amplification." My position within this organization is to be an Illustrator/ Artist for their magazine. My work for the magazine combines two things that I am very passionate about, graphic design, art, and social/environmental justice. These issues are extremely important to me because having an equal, clean, and healthy environment is my number one focus. The Reclamation Project's magazine, The Radical, aims to use different lenses to examine important topics through writing, photography, and art to inspire our readers to think critically and insightfully. It is also used to amplify underrepresented groups and educated all people, especially youth.
Ultimately, my goal is to create change and break barriers through graphic design and art. Through my illustrations, I aim to spark conversation and even create social transformations. As I work with other students who want to educate others and help foster new generations of informed people, I have been able to gain confidence in myself as well as work on my communication skills. When working as a team, it has been important to communicate in order to achieve a common goal. I have a strong emotional connection to the world and the natural environment around me, so I aim to use design to make a difference in the community around me.
Through my participation in student non-profit organizations, I have been able to go outside of my comfort zone, try new things, and illustrate by pushing boundaries and do it all in a timely manner. I am indirectly helping my community through my art because I am illustrating to spark conversation and to accompany written pieces that talk about social change and current issues in the world and within my community.
The piece I have attached below is an example of one of my illustrations for The Radical magazine. This specific piece is used to show the importance of representation in the media. It depicts a young girl reading a book that portrays a girl that looks just like her.
