One of the core pillars I exemplified is being “hungry,” which reflects drive, determination, and a commitment to exceed expectations. This trait was especially evident during my internship with a local research initiative focused on microbiology and bioinformatics. While initially a dry lab experience, I took the opportunity to explore outside my assigned tasks to gain hands-on experience in a wet lab setting—a step that went beyond my original role and demonstrated my hunger to learn and grow.
During the internship, I was assigned to analyze data sets and conduct simulations in the dry lab, which helped me understand theoretical processes and statistical tools. While I completed these tasks diligently, I felt compelled to deepen my understanding of the research by connecting it to tangible applications. When medical students presented an anatomy demonstration, I took the initiative to ask questions and request additional exposure to wet lab activities. I also volunteered to assist in preparing tissue samples for analysis, an experience I had not been formally trained for but was eager to learn.
To ensure I exceeded expectations, I invested time outside my internship hours to study the methodologies used in the wet lab, such as tissue staining and microscopy. I sought guidance from the graduate students, showing humility and an openness to learn from those more experienced. My determination to immerse myself in all aspects of the research process not only expanded my skill set but also contributed to the team’s overall productivity.
My actions had a notable impact on the project and team. By combining insights from both the dry and wet lab, I helped bridge the gap between data analysis and practical implementation. My proactive approach encouraged others to collaborate across different lab sections, creating a more cohesive environment. The lead researcher later commended me for my initiative, noting that my drive and curiosity helped enhance the study’s scope and outcomes.
This experience reinforced the importance of staying hungry for knowledge and opportunities, especially in fields like medicine and research, where growth often stems from pushing beyond assigned responsibilities. It also highlighted how initiative and collaboration can lead to meaningful contributions that benefit not only individual growth but also the team and project as a whole.
This mindset continues to guide me in my academic and personal pursuits. As I work toward a career in mental health, I remain committed to going above and beyond to serve patients and improve the systems they rely on. Whether through advocating for innovative solutions, like my mental health project Your Safe Place, or expanding my clinical knowledge, my hunger to learn and contribute fuels my desire to create lasting, positive change.

My high school journey has been a blend of academic exploration, leadership, and a deep commitment to making a difference in my community. As a senior at Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School, I’ve immersed myself in a variety of interests and activities that reflect my passion for science, mental health, and helping others. From serving as an officer in the Health Information Project, where I lead discussions about mental health topics with underclassmen, to being a member of the Science National Honor Society, my extracurricular involvement is driven by a desire to inspire and support those around me.
One of my most meaningful projects has been Your Safe Place, a mental health initiative I created to provide teenagers with access to free virtual counseling sessions. Growing up, I faced my own mental health struggles and witnessed the stigma surrounding mental health issues, particularly within Latino communities. This experience shaped my mission to offer a safe, judgment-free space for teens to express themselves and seek help. This project has reinforced my belief in the importance of advocacy and has inspired my career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist. After high school, I plan to pursue a degree in neuroscience or psychology, eventually opening my own clinic where I can continue to bridge the gap in mental health resources for underserved populations.
Beyond academics, I’m an athlete on my high school’s volleyball team, which has taught me resilience, teamwork, and time management. Sports have been a source of joy and a reminder of the importance of balance and perseverance. In addition to sports, I’ve participated in community service projects such as organizing health fairs and educational workshops through the Pre-Cure Medical Club, as well as volunteering as a foster parent for Miami-Dade Animal Services, where I cared for a kitten with severe infections until I found her a loving home.
If I could start my own charity, it would expand upon my work with Your Safe Place by focusing on addressing mental health challenges within underserved communities, particularly teenagers from minority backgrounds. The mission would be to break the stigma surrounding mental health, provide accessible resources, and foster open conversations about mental wellness. The charity would offer free counseling services, workshops on mindfulness and emotional intelligence, and mentorship programs led by volunteers. Volunteers would include mental health professionals, trained peer mentors, and community members dedicated to providing support and spreading awareness. They would facilitate group therapy sessions, host educational seminars, and coordinate outreach events in schools and community centers.
Ultimately, my charity would strive to ensure that no teenager feels alone in their struggles. By creating an inclusive, compassionate environment, the organization would empower young people to prioritize their mental health and build a foundation for a brighter, healthier future. This vision aligns with my larger goal of creating lasting change, not only through professional endeavors but by inspiring others to join the fight against the mental health crisis.

I am driven by a deep passion for helping others and a desire to make the world a better place, particularly by addressing mental health disparities. Growing up in Venezuela and later moving to Panama and the United States, I faced challenges that tested my resilience and shaped my perspective. These experiences gave me the ability to adapt to new environments and fueled my commitment to creating meaningful change.
I aim to pursue a career in medicine with a focus on mental health, combining science and compassion to improve access to care for underserved communities. I believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it often receives less attention, particularly in Latino communities where stigma surrounds conditions like depression and anxiety. My dream is to change that narrative by becoming a mental health advocate and doctor who can provide culturally sensitive care and resources.
One of my proudest accomplishments is founding “Your Safe Place,” a nonprofit organization that provides free mental health resources for teenagers. This initiative was born out of my own struggles with mental health after experiencing bullying. Through this project, I learned how to empathize with others, manage a team, and work toward solutions that address real needs. It reinforced my belief in the power of community and highlighted how small actions can create lasting ripples of change.
In college, I anticipate challenges such as navigating rigorous academic coursework, balancing extracurricular activities, and overcoming financial constraints. However, I view these obstacles as opportunities for growth. To stay grounded, I plan to use the adaptability I developed as a child moving between countries. I will also lean on the support systems available at my university, including academic advising, counseling services, and peer networks. Additionally, I’ll rely on time management and perseverance to keep me focused on my goals.
My passion for science and the human mind drives my curiosity about the world. I’ve taken courses in psychology and biology to better understand how we can use the brain’s potential to heal and thrive. Beyond academics, I love engaging in activities that bring people together, whether it’s through my high school’s Health Information Project (HIP), where I educated peers about mental health, or volunteering to support community initiatives. These experiences have taught me the importance of leadership and collaboration in creating a positive impact.
In the future, I hope to work in both clinical and research settings, finding innovative ways to make mental health care more accessible and effective. I envision partnering with schools, community organizations, and policymakers to implement programs that educate and empower individuals about their mental well-being. By focusing on prevention and early intervention, I want to help others overcome barriers to care and live healthier, happier lives.
Ultimately, my dream is to combine my education, personal experiences, and passion for service to bridge the gap in mental health care. The challenges I’ve faced have shaped me into someone who is resourceful, empathetic, and determined to make a difference. Through persistence and purpose, I hope to leave a legacy of compassion and advocacy that inspires others to do the same.

Growing up in Venezuela, my mother and I faced numerous challenges that tested our resilience and shaped our perspectives. Living in a modest home, it was just the two of us navigating the complexities of daily life. One night, our home was robbed, leaving us shaken and vulnerable. This traumatic event was a turning point for my mother; she recognized the increasing dangers in our environment and made the courageous decision to seek a safer place for us. After extensive research and planning, she chose to relocate us to Panama, hoping for a fresh start and better opportunities.
The transition to Panama was fraught with its own set of obstacles. As newcomers, we faced cultural adjustments, language barriers, and the daunting task of rebuilding our lives from scratch. For me, integrating into a new school environment was particularly challenging. I became the target of bullying, which eroded my self-esteem and sense of belonging. The taunts and isolation I experienced made me question my worth and left me feeling alienated. However, these adversities also ignited a determination within me to rise above the negativity and prove my resilience.
Witnessing my mother’s unwavering determination to provide a better life for us instilled in me a profound appreciation for perseverance and sacrifice. Her actions taught me that education is not merely a pathway to personal success but a powerful tool for effecting positive change in the world. I came to view education as a means to rise above circumstances and contribute meaningfully to society. This perspective has fueled my ambition to pursue higher education with a focus on mental health advocacy.
My personal experiences with bullying and the emotional turmoil that accompanied it have deepened my empathy for others facing similar challenges. I became acutely aware of the mental health struggles that many individuals endure, often in silence. This realization inspired me to take proactive steps toward making a difference. I founded “Your Safe Place,” a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free mental health resources for teenagers. Through this initiative, I aim to create a supportive community where young people can access the help they need without fear of judgment or stigma.
In my high school, I took on the role of an officer in the Health Information Project (HIP), where I educated my peers about mental health, aiming to break down the stigma and promote open conversations. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of mental health education and advocacy. They have also solidified my commitment to pursuing a career in medicine, with a focus on mental health, so that I can provide culturally sensitive care and address disparities in underserved communities.
The challenges I’ve faced have not only strengthened my resolve but have also deepened my commitment to giving back to the community. I plan to leverage my experiences and education to create safe spaces for dialogue, support systems for those in need, and initiatives that foster resilience and empowerment. By focusing on prevention and early intervention, I hope to help others overcome barriers to care and live healthier, happier lives.
In summary, the adversities of my past have been instrumental in shaping my personal growth and outlook on education. They have inspired me to pursue a path where I can make a meaningful impact, ensuring that others do not have to face the same struggles alone. Through persistence and purpose, I hope to leave a legacy of compassion and advocacy that inspires others to do the same.
