Growing up, money was always a concern. My parents have put everything they had towards my health and success. I have an incredible support system who has guided me in becoming the woman I am today. I work two part-time jobs and have studied on-campus at Ohio University since my junior year. I work hard for my future, balancing these responsibilities while being involved in high school organizations, such as the National Honor Society and varsity athletics. I do this not only for my own success, but also because my parents have given me something from nothing.
My goal is to be the first in my immediate family to receive a bachelors degree. I hope to pursue my father's business dreams and one day take care of my parents as they have me. I wish to use my pockets to bless others in need, because I know what it's like to live in poverty. And most importantly, I hope to be the mom for my future children that my mom was for me. I want to be able to give them more opportunities than I had growing up, and guide them in their pursuit of their dreams.
I am a great scholarship candidate because my drive for success at an early age is like no one I have ever met before. I am a dedicated scholar and employee, and I am always looking for ways to improve the quality of life of myself and others around me. My resilience and determination push me to overcome obstacles, while my commitment to growth ensures I make the most of every opportunity. With scholarships, I can continue to excel academically, contribute to my community, and create a future that reflects hard work and purpose.

Most movies entertain you for the time being, but very few stay with you after the credits roll. The Blind Side is one of those movies for me. What began as a story about football became a lesson about empathy, opportunity, and the compassion that we should have for others. Watching Michael Oher's journey made me reflect deeply on kindness, privilege, and how easily someones life can change when another person chooses to care.
Michael Oher's story affected me because it was painfully authentic. He wasn't struggling because he lacked ability or motivation, he was struggling because he lacked stability. There was no one to advocate for him and no place he could truly call home. Watching him move through life unnoticed and underestimated reminded me that many people around us carry struggles that are invisible.
What moved me the most was the Tuohy family's decision to help Michael when most turned a blind eye to his situation. Leigh Ann and Sean didn't change his life with one dramatic moment, but they continued to show up for him every day. They gave him a safe place to sleep, encouragement, patience, and belief -- things that are easily taken for granted. Their actions made me reflect on my own life and recognize how much support I have received, while also inspiring me to offer that same care to others.
The movie also correlated with how I think about opportunity in my community. Michael had the potential to succeed long before football became part of his life, but potential alone was not enough. He needed guidance, education, and people who believed in him. The Blind Side highlighted that success is often shaped by access to support just as much by effort, and that the starting point is different for everyone.
Lastly, the film emphasized the power of belief. As Michael begins to feel supported, he gains confidence and direction. That message resonated with me because of my past experiences with self doubt, and the woman who helped me realize my own potential. It reminded me how much difference encouragement can make, and how important it is to recognize and appreciate those who push us forward.
Ultimately, The Blind Side had the greatest impact on my life because it showed that compassion is an active choice. The Tuohys didn’t change the world in a grand way -- they changed one life, and that was enough to make an impact on the hearts of millions of people. Their story showed me that love, belief, and consistency can reshape a life, and it inspired me to be more aware of the opportunities I have to make that kind of difference for others.
Sharen and Mila Kohute Scholarship
"Among the students I have instructed throughout my 30+ years as a teacher, administrator, and adjunct, Cami has one of the strongest work ethics I have ever encountered," wrote Dr. Kimberly Jones, my former Gifted and Federal programs coordinator. Looking back now, the day I met Dr. Jones was the day that my life changed forever. Not because she changed my abilities, but because she helped me recognize them.
In the sixth grade, I was granted the opportunity to test for my school districts Talented and Gifted program. With scores in the 95th percentile, I was immediately accepted and immersed in rigorous academic projects, eventually serving as a delegate in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Model United Nations. Throughout these experiences, Dr. Jones, an exceptionally intelligent and dedicated educator, worked with me closely, carefully overseeing my progress and holding me to standards that pushed me beyond what I believed I was capable of achieving.
During my seventh grade year, Dr. Jones urged me to take placement exams, confident that I would thrive in advanced coursework. Her belief in me led to my skipping a grade in both English and mathematics, enrolling in freshman-level classes as an eighth grader, where I continued to earn high grades. Just two years later, again at her recommendation, I began taking college courses at our high school. Although Dr. Jones was no longer working for Southern Local by then , the confidence she instilled in me endured. She helped me recognize my own potential and believe that I was capable of more.
By my junior year of high school, at just sixteen years old, I took the initiative to begin studying at Ohio University's main campus -- a step I would not have had the courage to take without the foundation Dr. Jones helped build. There, I received honors, making the Provost's list my first semester, and the Dean's list my second. I started building a network with new people -- I met people that presented me with job offers, growth opportunities, and even a chance to model. In those moments, I finally understood what Dr. Jones had seen in me all along. Not just academic ability, but the confidence to step forward, take risks, and grow into the person I was capable of becoming.
Now, as I go through the college application process, it felt natural to reach out to Dr. Jones and ask that she write a letter of recommendation on my behalf. Despite the time that had passed since we last worked closely together, she remembered not only my academic achievements, but the determination and work ethic that I had been developing since the sixth grade. Her willingness to advocate for me once again reminded me that her belief in me had never been temporary. It was something she invested in and continued to stand behind. Having her voice speak for my character was both an honor and a powerful reminder of how profoundly her guidance has shaped the student and the young woman that I am today.
Dr. Jones did more than guide my academic journey. She helped me to see myself as someone capable of growth, leadership, and ambition. Her unwavering belief in me changed how I approached opportunity and how I envisioned my future. As I now take the next step into higher education, I carry with me the confidence she instilled and the responsibility to use my potential with purpose. I hope to honor her impact not only through my achievements, but by becoming someone who, like her, recognizes possibility in others and helps bring it to life.
Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My name is Cameryn O'Nail and I am from Southern Perry County, Ohio. I am deeply moved by the life of Kalia D. Davis, who demonstrated qualities of kindness, ambition, and excellence at a young age. Her story, marked by individual achievement and the goodness of her heart, is a reminder of the kind of person I strive to be. I aspire to embody similar values of hard work and resilience, and serve others just as Kalia served her community.
Growing up in an area of poverty, I have seen firsthand how limited resources can shape both challenges and character. My background is my reason; it has instilled in me a drive to succeed academically and beyond. I have always aimed to achieve at the highest levels in my education, athletics, and community involvement, similar to Kalia. I have juggled multiple responsibilities -- working two jobs, being an active member of the National Honor Society, and leading my teammates as a captain of the varsity volleyball team -- to support my future and contribute meaningfully to my community. My journey so far has been characterized as a dedication to accomplishment, not only for myself, but those around me.
With that being said, receiving this scholarship would help me to continue my education without the burden of financial stress. It would provide me with the resources needed to continue putting forth my best effort into my studies and later, into my professional journey. By alleviating these financial constraints, I would be able to focus fully on developing my skills, working toward my long-term goals, and making the world a better place.
My goal is to make a tangible difference in communities like the one I grew up in, specifically by investing in the restoration of real estate and the promotion of small businesses. I hope to use my love for business to revive struggling neighborhoods and directly assist those affected by poverty. All things considered, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance -- it represents an investment in my future and the opportunity I strive to create. It symbolizes a commitment to continuing Kalia's legacy through the creation of everlasting, positive change.
In conclusion, my journey, shaped by both challenges and aspirations, reflects a commitment to growth, service, and excellence -- values that Kalia D. Davis exemplified in her lifetime. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to continue pursuing my education and goals without financial worry, empowering me to serve my community and make a lasting difference. It is an investment in a future shaped by hard work, resilience, and service, honoring Kalia D. Davis’s legacy by turning inspiration into action.
Kristinspiration Scholarship
As a first generation college student with a background of poverty, education is important to me because I am determined to build a future that honors the struggle of my neighbors. Growing up in a low-income household and community, I learned early that numbers on a paycheck or a price tag could dictate what dreams seemed possible. I watched my parents set aside their own aspirations, local shops close their doors, and once-lively community events diminish all because the resources to keep them alive simply weren't there. To most people outside of my hometown, the struggle went unnoticed. But for me, it was a daily reminder that every statistic about poverty represents real people -- people who are hardworking, resilient, creative, and kind. People that have dreams. Those dreams, though often deferred, became the spark that fueled my own: to build a future where potential isn't limited by circumstance.
With that being said, I plan to pursue a degree in both marketing and entrepreneurship, and start my professional career in marketing and sales. I hope to use this as a practical step in gaining the valuable skills and the funds to pursue my long-term dream of investing in real estate. Investing in real estate is not only important for my personal success, but bringing life to communities like the one I grew up in. I strive to one day revive these neighborhoods, creating affordable, quality housing leading to the promotion of community growth and opportunity. These areas will no longer be defined by their limitations, but by the limitless potential I am determined to help bring forward.
As a result, I hope to leave behind a legacy of breaking cycles, replacing generational hardship with generational opportunity. By pursuing higher education, I am taking the first step toward making that vision real. Each class, internship, and experience I gain will equip me with the knowledge and confidence to create meaningful, lasting change in the communities that shaped me. I want to show others who grew up like I did that pathways do exist, and that their ideas and ambitions are not out of reach. As I move forward, I hope to use my success not as a finish line, but as a foundation for others. My goal is not only to build a better future for myself, but to help create a place where potential is recognized, opportunities are accessible, and every person has a fair chance to rise.
In the end, my journey is driven by a simple belief: where someone comes from should never limit what they can become. With the education and opportunities ahead of me, I am committed to using my skills to uplift the communities that raised me and to help others see possibility where they once saw barriers. I’m ready to take the next step. Not just for myself, but to create a legacy that expands opportunity for those who come after me.
Padriac Routa Memorial Scholarship
My name is Cameryn O'Nail, a senior at Miller High School who has dual-enrolled at Ohio University since the age of sixteen. I am a member of the National Honor Society, a two-year captain of the varsity volleyball team, a member of the workforce, and I have participated in three years of Academy of Leadership Abilities.
However, despite my many endeavors, my true calling is business. My passion for business started subconsciously at a very young age. My father was an insurance agent who always, throughout my childhood, listened to audiobooks like Rich Dad Poor Dad or had the New York Stock Exchange on TV. We would spend hours watching Shark Tank together, dreaming of businesses we would like to own one day. At the age of fourteen, I took it amongst myself to start my own small resale business, which I still operate today, and quickly fell in love. Throughout the years, as I learn more about myself and entrepreneurship, I have found that this is the path I would like to take for my future.
I plan to pursue a degree in both marketing and entrepreneurship, and start a career that will prepare me for my long-term goal of investing in real estate. This will allow me to gain valuable skills while also earning the financial resources needed to invest in the future. This approach will enable me to pursue my goals strategically, ensuring that I can invest in communities like mine without unnecessary risk.
My real estate goals go beyond that of personal success. My goal is to revive neighborhoods like the one I grew up in, those engulfed in poverty and lack of opportunity, creating affordable housing while promoting community growth and opportunity. I hope to develop projects that not only provide homes, but strengthen the social and economic affairs of these areas. My work would focus on creating spaces where struggling families thrive, local businesses can grow, and young individuals have the resources to pursue their dreams. I aim to turn neglected areas into vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods where opportunity is accessible to everyone.
Ultimately, my journey so far has shown me that passion becomes meaningful when it is paired with purpose. Business is more than a career interest for me. It is a tool I plan to utilize to uplift communities like mine. With a strong educational foundation, real-world experience, and a commitment to serving others, I am determined to build a future where economic growth and community well-being go hand in hand. I am excited for the challenges ahead, and even more excited for the impact I hope to make as I invest, one neighborhood at a time.

My name is Cameryn O'Nail, a senior at Miller High School who has dual-enrolled at Ohio University since the age of sixteen. I am a member of the National Honor Society, two-year captain of the varsity volleyball team, and I have participated in three years of Academy of Leadership Abilities. These programs have taught me the value of discipline, teamwork, and service, as well as how to take initiative and lead with empathy.
However, my true calling is business. At the age of fourteen, I took it amongst myself to start my own small business, which I still have today, and quickly fell in love. I plan to pursue a degree in marketing, and potentially entrepreneurship, and start a career that will prepare me for my long-term goal of investing in real estate.
My real estate goals go beyond that of personal success. My goal is to revive neighborhoods like the one I grew up in, those engulfed in poverty and lack of opportunity, creating affordable housing while promoting community growth and opportunity. My work would focus on creating spaces where struggling families thrive, local businesses can grow, and young individuals have the resources to pursue their dreams. I aim to turn neglected areas into vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods where opportunity is accessible to everyone.
With that being said, if I could start a charity, my mission would be helping students from low-income areas, like myself, fund their education. My organization would specialize in providing scholarships, mentorship programs, and resources to guide individuals through the college application process, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent talented and hardworking students from reaching their full potential. I envision calling this charity "Small Town, Big Dreams," a name that reflects its commitment to help students from rural and under-resourced communities achieve ambitions as big as their potential.
Additionally, my charity would collaborate with schools, libraries, and community centers to provide easy access to workshops, tutoring programs, and college-prep resources. By partnering with these local institutions, Small Town, Big Dreams would create a support network that gives students (and parents) the skills, guidance, and confidence they need to pursue their dreams.
Ultimately, my experiences growing up in a community with limited opportunities have shaped not only my ambitions, but my commitment to giving back. Whether through business, real estate, or my potential charity, I want to create pathways for disadvantaged students to success, just as I have been determined to succeed myself. I am motivated by the belief that hard work, empathy, and leadership can transform both lives and communities, and I am ready to dedicate my work to making that transformation a reality.
Phoenix Opportunity Award
For me, being a first generation college student isn't just about earning a degree -- it's about honoring my parent's sacrifices. Neither of them had the opportunity to complete college. My dad's studies were cut short after a devastating car accident that nearly cost him his life. My mom returned to school at the age of 36 while working in a factory, but when complications from a high-risk pregnancy arose, she made the difficult choice to put our family first, putting her own dreams aside.
Growing up, I proudly watched my dad leave the house in his suit and tie every day, serving others as an insurance agent. Even though he couldn't finish college, he never stopped thinking like an entrepreneur. He taught me to see potential where others saw limits and to never end the pursuit of my dreams. His determination inspired me to follow in his footsteps and pursue a degree in the business field. I want to build on the dreams he never got to fulfill by creating something meaningful -- something that will one day allow me to provide for my parents just as they provided for me.
Being a first-generation college student influences not only what I want to do, but why I want to do it. I understand the challenges that come from starting from scratch -- financially, academically, and emotionally. That's why I'm driven to help others build the stability and hope my parents worked so very hard to build for me. I want to put my business degree towards creating a better future for everyone. I hope to create opportunities for families like mine, and prove that determination and love can change lives.
For me, earning a degree isn't just an accomplishment, it's a promise. A promise to my parents that their sacrifices meant everything, and a promise to myself that I will turn their struggles into something beautiful, lasting, and full of purpose.
Charles Bowlus Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a low-income household and community, I learned early that numbers on a paycheck or a price tag could dictate what dreams seemed possible. I watched families struggle to keep their lights on, local businesses board up their windows, and community events fade simply because the money wasn't there to sustain them. For many, the struggle was invisible to those outside of my hometown. But to me, it was a daily reminder that there are real people behind every statistic about poverty -- people that are hardworking, creative and kind. People that have dreams. Those dreams, though often deferred, became the spark that fueled my own: to build a future where potential isn't limited by circumstance.
Money was always tight in my family. I took on two jobs to build savings for my future, knowing that when the time came to go to college, I was on my own. Opportunity was scarce, so I seized every chance that came my way. Through long hours and constant balancing, I learned discipline, independence, and a deep compassion for those who work tirelessly with little recognition. By experiencing struggle firsthand, I became determined to not only improve my own life, but also to find ways to contribute meaningfully to others facing the same challenges in my community. I began to notice the small ways that people could support one another -- making a donation to a local organization, giving old clothes to someone in need, or just simply encouraging someone to keep going. Those moments showed me that even when money is limited, community and care can create value in ways that numbers never can.
These experiences taught me that strengthening a community requires both the heart to understand people’s struggles and the knowledge to build systems that support them. That's why I want to study business: to connect economics with empathy and to learn how to create opportunities that turn potential into sustainable progress. I wish to explore how entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and local investment can help communities continue to thrive long after the first steps of economic development have been taken. By understanding how financial systems and human effort intersect, I can help design solutions that empower individuals and strengthen neighborhoods at the same time.
I used to think that my background was something to overcome. Now, I see it as the reason that I will succeed. Growing up low-income gave me a firsthand education in resourcefulness, perseverance, and the power of human connection. It taught me that success means more than personal achievement, it means bringing others along with you. Business, for me, isn't just about profit or growth; it's about transformation. Through education and empathy, I want to help build a world where no dream has to be postponed because of a price tag.
Marcia Bick Scholarship
Growing up in a community where opportunity was limited taught me early on that success does not happen by accident; it is built by people willing to work hard. Southern Perry County, a predominately rural area, has been greatly impacted by poverty and limited services. Around here, opportunity is not handed out, it is built from scratch. Poverty is my starting point, but it will not be my legacy. Instead, it has become my reason to devote myself to a better future. Students like me, shaped by perseverance and struggle, carry a determination and resilience born from experience. Scholarships and grants give us the chance to turn that perseverance into progress -- not just for ourselves, but for the communities that raised us.
Working two jobs at sixteen while balancing school and other extracurriculars was never a part of my plan -- but it became necessary. I knew that for the future I desire, I must get started as soon as possible. There were nights I came home exhausted, still facing hours of homework, and many mornings where I left before the sun came up. Through those long days, I discovered how strong I could be when I refused to give up. I've learned to find motivation in moments of struggle-- to remind myself that every shift, every late night, and every challenge is a step towards something greater. My hard work has taught me empathy for others fighting their own quiet battles and has given me deeper appreciation for every opportunity that I've earned.
Despite the challenges, I remain committed to my education and improving my future. I plan to study business at The Ohio State University or Ohio University of Athens, where I hope to gain the knowledge and leadership skills to promote sustainable economic growth in rural areas like Southern Perry County. My goal is to return home equipped to start my own business and invest in real estate. I want to use what I learn to create jobs, develop community initiatives, and show younger students that success can come from anywhere. For me, higher education is more than a personal dream, it's a path toward transforming the place that shaped me into one of opportunity and drive.
For motivated students from disadvantaged backgrounds, scholarships and grants are not simply financial assistance -- they are a lifeline. They bridge the gap between potential and opportunity. With this support, I can continue to work toward a future that not only changes my own life but lifts others along the way.
National Business Leadership Scholarship
In the business world, where profit and competition often cloud judgment, I intend to stay grounded in what is right rather than selfishness. My beliefs, values and ethics are the compass that will guide every decision that I make. Making decisions that will benefit my business as well as consumers will define my approach. By letting my values lead the way, I hope to build a career that creates positive change in my community and beyond.
Over the past few years, my faith has become the foundation of my values, teaching me to lead with honesty and compassion. I believe that success should not come at the expense of doing good. Rather than conforming to the greed of the typical business mindset, I strive to treat people with kindness and give glory to God through my successes. My faith encourages me to see every business interaction as an opportunity to serve others and create something meaningful. These beliefs will continue to influence how I handle difficult choices and ensure that I remain true to my principles when I am pressured to compromise them.
Running my own small business has taught me that success can align with sustainability and service. At the age of fourteen, I began thrifting and reselling clothes at discounted prices. I did this not just for a source of income, but in an effort to reduce waste and promote conscious consumption. Over the years, I have learned that businesses can make a positive impact. Every sale is a reminder that profit and purpose can coexist, and I take pride in knowing that my business supports both people and the environment. It has strengthened my belief that ethical choices can lead to long-term success and real change.
Looking ahead, I plan to carry these values into my future career by studying business at The Ohio State University or Ohio University of Athens and eventually developing my own company. My goal is to build businesses that do not just focus on profit, but uplift others along the way. I hope to one day return to communities like mine, those overlooked and underfunded, and help them grow from the ground up. I wish to show that noble leadership and success can go hand in hand and create visible, lasting change.
In every stage of my journey, from my faith to my small business, my values have guided me to act with honesty and heart. My experiences have shown me that true success is not defined by a dollar sign, but by the difference you make in peoples' lives and the righteousness you maintain along the way. As I continue to grow academically and professionally, my goal is not only to build a thriving career, but to pursue business with a cause. By leading with my beliefs, values, and ethics, I hope to contribute to a more sustainable and community-centered future.
