In honor of Black History Month, I want to celebrate the powerful influence of my grandmother, a remarkable Black woman who has inspired me to pursue my dreams and overcome any obstacles that come my way. Her resilience, wisdom, and unwavering belief in my potential have shaped my life in profound ways, making her a true leader in my personal journey. My grandmother grew up in an era marked by significant racial and social challenges. Born in the deep South during the 1940s, she faced systemic racism and discrimination from an early age. Despite these hardships, she exhibited an extraordinary determination to rise above her circumstances. She excelled in school, driven by a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education. Her stories of attending segregated schools, where resources were scarce and expectations were low, serve as a testament to her indomitable spirit. She often spoke of her teachers, who, despite limited means, instilled in her a love for learning and a belief that she could achieve anything. One of the most compelling lessons my grandmother taught me is the importance of perseverance. She worked multiple jobs to put herself through college, often facing blatant racism in the workplace. Yet, she never let these experiences embitter her; instead, they fueled her resolve to succeed. Her career as a nurse, a field in which she was one of the few Black women at the time, is a testament to her dedication and resilience. She not only excelled professionally but also mentored countless young women, encouraging them to pursue careers in healthcare. Growing up, I spent countless hours with my grandmother, listening to her stories and absorbing her wisdom. She would often tell me, "You are capable of achieving great things. Never let anyone tell you otherwise." Her words were a call to action for me. Whenever I faced difficulties, whether in school or personal life, I drew strength from her experiences. She showed me that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to demonstrate resilience and ingenuity. My grandmother also instilled in me a profound sense of pride in my heritage. She would recount the achievements of Black leaders, both historical and contemporary, emphasizing the importance of understanding and honoring our history. Figures like Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr., and Maya Angelou were frequent topics of discussion in our household. Through these conversations, my grandmother helped me see that the struggles and triumphs of these leaders were part of a larger narrative of resilience and excellence that I was a part of. Her influence extends beyond her personal achievements and historical teachings. My grandmother's life is a daily demonstration of compassion and community. She has always been a pillar of support for our family and a beacon of hope in our community. Whether through volunteering at local shelters, organizing community health fairs, or simply offering a listening ear to those in need, she exemplifies the values of service and empathy. Her actions have taught me that true leadership is about lifting others up and making a positive impact on the world around you. In honoring my grandmother this Black History Month, I celebrate not only her personal legacy but also the broader legacy of Black women whose strength and wisdom have shaped our society. As a biracial student of a religious Black family and an individual who identifies as gay, I bring a unique perspective and set of experiences to any academic or professional environment. Growing up in my family you could never talk about the idea of sexuality. Having any other sexuality other than straight was always seen as something evil and unnatural, something you should just pray away. I was seen as the outcast growing up as a biracial kid. This has shaped me in many ways and has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy, caution, and determination. My motivation for seeking higher education stems from a desire to challenge stereotypes and break barriers within both the LGBTQ+ and Black communities. I believe that education is a powerful tool for change and empowerment. I am committed to continue my education so I can be the first member of my family to go to college. Some challenges I know I will face in my college journey are stereotypes and negative stigmas surrounding being gay and being biracial. Despite facing challenges and obstacles along the way, I have remained strong and resilient in pursuing my goals and aspirations. My proudest accomplishment is not only embracing my authentic self but also using my voice and experiences to inspire others to do the same. Whether it's through talking to other kids who have been through similar struggles as me or helping adults understand that the things they say or do around their children have negative effects on them. I try to create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. In my community and at school, I am known for being the only openly gay kid, being compassionate, and dedication to bring out awareness. Looking ahead, my personal and professional goals include getting a degree in marine biology or a degree in advocating for social or environmental change. I want to continue to be a voice for queer youth letting them know they are not alone and I want to continue to help others who are willing to learn and grow from their old ways of thinking. I am passionate about contributing to the creation of a more safe and open environment , and I am committed to using my education and experiences to make a positive impact in my community. I vividly recall a challenging time during a school project when I encountered significant difficulties. The project was falling behind, and we were grappling with serious group dynamic issues. Despite these challenges, I was determined to turn things around and achieve success. To begin with, I employed strong communication skills to unite and motivate my group. Recognizing that poor communication was at the root of many problems, I initiated open and honest discussions to uncover the underlying issues. I encouraged everyone to express their thoughts and feelings, creating an environment where everyone felt heard and valued. This collaborative approach helped us gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and allowed us to brainstorm innovative strategies. For instance, during a meeting, a teammate suggested a new way to divide the workload, which we all agreed could improve efficiency and reduce overlap. In addition to communication, I used my problem-solving skills to break down complex issues into manageable tasks. I proposed a methodical approach where we could focus on incremental progress and celebrate small victories along the way. By setting achievable milestones, we were able to regain momentum and build confidence in our ability to overcome obstacles. I remember one specific milestone was completing the initial research phase, which we celebrated with a small get-together. This boosted morale and motivated us to push forward. Furthermore, I honed my leadership skills to provide clear direction and support to overwhelmed group members. Recognizing the diverse strengths within the team, I delegated tasks based on individual capabilities and interests. For example, one team member was skilled in graphic design, so I assigned them the task of creating visual aids for our presentation. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance and reinforced my belief in the power of teamwork to overcome significant obstacles. My name is Cameron Thomas, a rising freshman at Nova Southeastern University, and I am a proud queer man. I firmly believe that my identity does not only define who I am but also shapes my aspirations. As a queer student, I want to make campus life and life, in general, safe for my brothers and sisters in the community. My passion for marine biology stems from a deep-rooted love for the ocean and its inhabitants. This love, coupled with my dedication to the LGBTQ+ community, has given birth to a unique ambition. I intend to use my education in marine biology to foster an environment of inclusivity and acceptance, not just within the LGBTQ+ community, but also for all those who share my passion for marine sciences. In my journey through high school, maintaining a GPA of 3.79, I have learned that knowledge not shared is knowledge wasted. I plan to use the knowledge I gain from my studies to educate people about the importance of marine life and the need for its conservation. However, I want to do more than just share facts and figures. I want to use this platform to also share my experiences as a queer man in the field of marine biology. I believe that by openly discussing my experiences and challenges, I can create a safe space for other queer students who share my passion. I want them to know that they are not alone and that their identity should not hinder their dreams. I hope to inspire them to break free from the societal norms that dictate what they can or cannot do based on their identity. Moreover, as a man of Black and White heritage, I understand the importance of representation. I plan to use my position to increase visibility for people of color within the LGBTQ+ community in the field of marine biology. I hope to challenge the stereotypes and prejudices that often plague our society, showing that we are just as capable and deserving of success. In addition, I aim to use my education to contribute towards the betterment of society by advocating for the protection of marine life. The health of our oceans is directly linked to the health of our society. By educating people about the importance of marine conservation, I hope to inspire them to take action, leading to a healthier and more sustainable society. In conclusion, I plan to use my education in marine biology to make a positive impact on society by fostering inclusivity within the marine sciences community and advocating for marine conservation. I believe that the VNutrition & Wellness’ Annual LGBTQ+ Vitality Scholarship will provide me with the support I need to achieve these goals.
