From a young age, I enjoyed helping others and have always felt as though helping others was a natural thing to do. I have always enjoyed helping people with problems from making people laugh to simply listening to them when they are struggling. As long as I can have a positive impact on others I am happy and that's how I always have been. At 16 my public safety journey began as a volunteer firefighter for my local fire department. I would commit most of my time to training, and call running. As a result, I sacrificed my high school time and really didn't do much other than run calls. I wouldn't change any of it. I helped a lot of people and that's worth more than anything. During high school, I earned my first job as an EMT for a private ambulance company. After graduation, I earned my first full-time position as a full-time Firefighter/EMT. I loved my job, but one day I ran a call that would lead me to consider a different perspective on my service. I treated a crime victim. She was brutally injured, and we were able to help her. After this call, I was thinking about the victim and the suspect that the sheriffs office was actively looking for. I was thinking about how I'd like to be one of the ones to go catch him, and how maybe if I was on the law enforcement side I could've prevented what happened to her from happening to someone else. As a result of this, I began to look for a career in law enforcement. I love fire and EMS so I continued to work part time and volunteer but I felt called to law enforcement. I answered this call and began working as a detention deputy at a large sheriffs office. There I was able to help inmates and have a positive impact on their lives. While here though I got to see firsthand various social problems that affect our society. I kept seeing the same inmates returning and seeing the effects lack of access to mental healthcare had on my community. My passion for service continues to push me forward in my academic, and professional pursuits. My goal is to use the knowledge I gain from a criminology bachelors degree to benefit my community by enacting policy change at an administrative level in law enforcement. I plan to work with other aspects of the local government to help better address community issues and use modern community policing approaches to build a better relationship with the community. I am currently studying in my chosen field and I have already been exposed to a wealth of information even in intro-level sociology classes. I can only imagine the amount of information I will obtain that will help me make lasting and impactful changes in my community. This degree will not only give me the tools I need to make widespread change but will also give me the opportunity to get into a position to make those changes.
