Callie-Louisiana Senior-Future Smile Maker
Hey y’all! I’m Callie, a senior from a small town in Louisiana, where we know how to work hard and cheer loud Go Tigers! With a 3.7 GPA and a 17 on the ACT, I’m staying busy between my Beta Club, church, and working as a cashier to help my family. I’m the first in my family to head to college, and I couldn’t be more excited to make that leap.
I’m chasing my dream to become a kids' dental hygienist after a bad experience with my own smile growing up. If I can help just one kid feel confident about their grin, it’ll all be worth it. My motto is simple: "A smile for you and me." Confidence comes from within, and it all starts with that smile!
Anything y’all can offer to help me make that dream a reality would mean the world. I’m ready to make some magic happen and I promise, I’ll be working hard every step of the way. Go Tigers!

Professor Harold Bloom's profound statement, "I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence," resonates deeply with my understanding of special education. It encapsulates the idea that education is not merely about imparting knowledge, but about fostering self-discovery and empowering students to recognize their inherent worth. In the context of special education, this means guiding students with diverse learning needs toward self-awareness, self-acceptance, and a deep understanding of their unique abilities. It's about helping them recognize their value, not despite their challenges, but because of who they are as individuals. This quote underscores the importance of creating a learning environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued for their unique contributions.
My mission as a special education teacher is to cultivate an inclusive and supportive classroom where every student feels a strong sense of belonging and purpose. This begins with building genuine relationships based on trust, empathy, and mutual respect. By taking the time to understand each student's individual strengths, needs, and learning styles, I can tailor my instruction to meet them where they are. This personalized approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential. I aim to empower students to become active participants in their own learning, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their accomplishments. By encouraging them to set goals, track their progress, and celebrate their successes, I can help them develop a growth mindset and a belief in their ability to overcome challenges.
To achieve this mission, I will employ a variety of evidence-based strategies and techniques. Differentiated instruction will allow me to adapt my teaching methods, materials, and assessments to accommodate the diverse learning needs of my students. This may involve providing alternative formats for assignments, offering flexible grouping options, or adjusting the pace of instruction. Assistive technology will play a crucial role in providing students with the tools they need to overcome challenges and access the curriculum. This may include screen readers, speech-to-text software, or graphic organizers. Furthermore, a strong focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) will be integrated into the curriculum to help students develop self-awareness, manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. By teaching students these essential life skills, I can help them navigate the social and emotional challenges they may face and prepare them for success in all aspects of their lives. Ultimately, my goal is to equip students with the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to thrive, not just in the classroom, but in all aspects of their lives, empowering them to become confident, independent, and contributing members of society.
