I live in, Hulbert, Oklahoma, a rural community in the heart of the Cherokee Nation reservation. I have seen firsthand the difficulties that many Native Americans face with the mental health crisis. I strive to become a beacon of light for those individuals fighting this crisis. I am an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and the Osage Nation tribes of Oklahoma. I take great pride in my heritage and helping those in my community possibly facing any mental health illness. Studies have shown that American Indians have a higher prevalence of mental health problems and psychiatric comorbidity. I strive to make every change possible for the bettering of the American Indians of Oklahoma. When I graduate I will be a first-generation college graduate. In my family, I've seen multiple family members struggle with mental health issues that then lead to substance and alcohol abuse. I've seen this destroy perfect families, it will be my mission that our voices are heard and we are taken seriously when we ask for help the first time. I would venture to say that most of the reason we have so many problems with abuses of substances and alcohol is due to the fact that their voices are never heard, it is so easy to tell someone that what they're experiencing is not valid when in all reality all they need is a little help. In the fall of 2024, Cherokee Nation plans on converting W.W. Hastings Hospital into a mental health and rehabilitation center serving more than 100,000 Indigenous citizens. I plan on getting my bachelor's degree in Psychology at Northeastern State University and continuing my education for my Master's at either the University of Oklahoma or Oklahoma State University. I have always had a passion for getting a better understanding of the human mind, I believe that psychology will truly bring me into that dream. Psychology is one of the most important degrees that we as adults can pursue. I am very thankful that I am even able to apply for this scholarship. Seeing that there are scholarships out there for Native Americans who are pursuing this degree path is a very good thing! I plan on helping those who are in dark places understand that things can get better! Hopefully one day in the future I will also be able to contribute to a scholarship for Native Americans pursuing college. Thank you!
