My fascination with STEM began unexpectedly in fifth grade during a field trip to the Earl Bakken Museum. Learning about the Minnesota made pacemaker sparked a curiosity I didn’t know I had. I spent weeks researching how it worked and even created a History Day project about it. When I discovered that three of my relatives relied on pacemakers, the science behind it became deeply personal. I realized that health care connects innovation and compassion in a way that can truly change lives.
At first, I hesitated to pursue a medical career because I was intimidated by the schooling it required. But the more I learned, the more I wanted to be part of this field. I explored different areas of health care, from cardiology to optometry, considering both my personal interests and my desire to enter the workforce within a few years of graduation. Eventually, I discovered sonography, which perfectly blends my curiosity for technology with my passion for helping others.
Through studying sonography, I want to gain the knowledge and skills to help people better understand their health. Health care is rapidly changing, and I want to be part of that change. After applying to many colleges and narrowing down what I value in my education I decided to move forward with attending the University of Minnesota Rochester in the fall of 2026. UMR’s hands-on learning environment and close connection with the Rochester medical community make it the ideal place for me to explore my interests and grow into a compassionate, skilled professional. I am very excited to see what my future brings to me at UMR. However, I am more excited to get the opportunity to go to a college that doesn't make you sit in lectures. The commitment to education at UMR drives me, as a student, to want to learn. Hearing that I'll be involved in hands-on learning techniques and even more involved with the Mayo Clinic inspires me to do my best.
My dream is to leave my mark in everything I do. With that, I strive to be the best student I can be and put my foot forward in my education. Educating people on their personal health is one of my biggest goals in life that I want to complete. With sonography, I want to help people detect issues before they come to the surface. Something that could truly change lives. My education is one of the most important things I value. I hope to confidently learn and practice sonography while becoming a compassionate medical professional.
