FinalistBio
Hello,
My name is Caleb Miller. I am an 18-year-old undergraduate who is going to be transferring to Geneva College in the Fall of 2023. I am going to be enrolled in Geneva's 3+1 Cybersecurity/Computer Science program, and my end goal is to receive a Masters in Cybersecurity.
It's been a long road to get to here, and I still have a lot left to go. I have had many obstacles in my way just to get to this point. I was diagnosed with ADHD from an early age, which has made completing schoolwork difficult to say the least. My brain sometimes doesn't comply when the time comes to buckle down and get work done. That isn't to say I am not a hard worker. I have lived on a farm all my life, so hard work is pretty much a requirement where I live.
ADHD hasn't just affected my life, either. My mother has had to deal with me my entire life, but she has been a trooper throughout all of it. She is the best mother (and the best teacher, for I am homeschooled) that I could ask for. She has been a great role model for me, and she's not the only one.
My father and my grandfather have inspired me in their teachings and mentorship. Through their knowledge of writing from their work as newspaper columnists, they have guided me in writing papers, essays, and more. The reason I can write as well as I do is all because of them.
I believe I would be a good candidate for some of these scholarships, not because of my own ability, but because of the guidance from my family, who I wouldn't trade for the world.

If you were to ever meet me in person, you would come to find that I look like the most average Joe who's ever walked the earth. I am an overweight, brown-haired, blue-eyed caucasian male with a less than appealing face. But it's not my looks that set me apart. I am told that I am very smart (I personally don't believe so with some of the actions I have made in the past, but I'll take their word for it). I have a plethora of hobbies, from various forms of art, to guitar, to computer programming. I love a lot of different kinds of music, but my favorite has to be classic rock (70s and 80s rock and the like). I love a lot of different kinds of foods, no particular favorites, but if it's spicy, then I will absolutely eat it. Like I mentioned, I like computer programming, which brings us to my major and future career: Cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is a field that is quickly growing, and here's why:
Cybersecurity and cyber threats have become a recent hot topic among users of the internet, and they have only become worse as time has passed. Between online scams, phishing, and even hacking, the online world has become ground zero for hostile threats to our livelihood. It doesn't take much for a hacker to crack open a database, or for someone to fall prey to an online scam. Once that happens, chaos ensues.
The fight for cyber protection is ongoing. As new ways to protect information surface, attackers will find new ways to crack anything that has been encrypted. It is of utmost importance that the field of cybersecurity continues to grow, lest online assailants continue to overturn every attempt to stop them. Unfortunately for us, these attackers are winning. And they will continue to win unless something is done to stop them.
This is my plan. Once I graduate and receive my degree, I will intern at various organizations that stop the threats described above. Using this hands-on experience, I will start my own organization, which will help test database security systems and check for "leaks," and then proceed to patch and protect those leaks. This will help us to be absolutely certain that a database is completely protected and that the likelihood of a breach is next to none. I will hire people who are like me, people with a desire to make a positive impact and strive for greater security. Together, we will strive to protect those around us, until our community and our country is safe. That is my plan, and this is how I plan to give back to my community.

I, like many others, lead a relatively simple life. I grew up on my family's farm. I wake up, do chores, get schoolwork done, and get any personal tasks that my mother wants me to do done. I also have my fair share of hobbies and things I like to do on the side.
But personal work aside, I do also enjoy working in service of others. One of my favorite ministries is The Way Station, an organization that helps locals, the poor, and those in need who live in downtown East Liverpool (which is a very poverty-ridden town that I live near). I try to help at The Way Station whenever I can: I help set out and hand out food, liquids, basic hygiene items, and other essential materials. I also donate old items of mine that I don't use anymore, such as clothes, toys, and other items. Typically, these items are sold at a cheap price (that's one of the ways The Way Station makes enough money to keep running). But in case someone needs clothing and can't afford it, I also try to give my tithe money to the Way Station so that they can use it to pay for the clothing.
Volunteering has changed my mindset in many different ways. Mostly, it has helped me to see how many people are in need of help, and in need of change. I can help provide this change, but I need help to do so. So, to get straight to the point, I need money in order to pursue my degree in Cybersecurity. It is my hope that I can help defend my community through my degree."
This is my plan. Once I graduate and receive my degree, I will intern at various cybersecurity organizations. Using the hands-on experience I gain from working at these organizations, I will start my own organization, which will help test database security systems and check for "leaks," and then proceed to patch and protect those leaks. This will help us to be absolutely certain that a database is completely protected and that the likelihood of a breach is next to none. I will hire people who are like me, people with a desire to make a positive impact and strive for greater security. Together, we will strive to protect those around us, until our community and our country is safe. That is my plan.

Thankfully, there is still hope. As long as people continue to enter and succeed in this field, we can negate the damage done by these attackers, and even stop them. We can encrypt important information and keep it safe. We can stop individuals who use bots to send hundreds of thousands of phishing scams and virulent ads. We can even create databases that can be kept under lock and key, only to be accessed when necessary, never to be accessed unauthorizedly. All we need are people who have the education and who are willing to stand up and fight this. People like you.

But now, I am going off to college. My studies will make finding time to do charity work difficult. I still plan on helping at the Way Station whenever possible, although my time will be limited. In the meantime, I will be working towards another way to help my local community.
As of right now, once I graduate high school, I will be working towards a degree in Cybersecurity. This is my plan. I have had experience helping my community, I volunteer at a local inner city organization that hands out necessities (food, water, clothing, hygiene items, etc.) to those in need. I strive to make the world a better and safer place, and I am now taking the next step in doing so: I am striving to make our online community safer through cybersecurity.
