My passion for the natural world began in high school through photography. I started taking long walks with my camera, hoping to capture the small details of nature—the patterns of leaves, the movement of light, and the stillness of early mornings. Over time, I found myself drawn to photographing birds. What began as a way to improve my photography turned into something much deeper. I became fascinated by the way birds moved, how they interacted with their surroundings, and the variety of species that could be found so close to home. Spending weekends observing and identifying them helped me realize how deeply connected everything in nature is. That realization sparked my goal to pursue a career where I can teach others, especially children, about conservation and the importance of protecting the environment.
I have always believed that education is the first step toward environmental awareness. When people, particularly young students, learn how ecosystems function and how their actions affect the world around them, they begin to care more deeply. I want to be someone who helps spark that awareness. Whether it is leading nature walks, teaching about local bird species, or showing how to identify native plants, I want to create experiences that make kids feel connected to nature and excited to care for it.
Birds continue to be at the heart of my passion. They are incredible indicators of environmental health, and studying them has taught me patience, observation, and appreciation for even the smallest details. I hope to share that same sense of wonder with others, to help them notice the flash of color in a cardinal’s wing or the sound of a migratory flock overhead and understand that they are part of something larger.
Pursuing higher education is a crucial step toward reaching these goals. A college degree will give me the knowledge and communication skills I need to work in environmental education and conservation. However, paying for tuition is one of the biggest challenges I face. This scholarship would ease that financial burden and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and volunteer work in parks and wildlife programs. It would bring me one step closer to turning my passion for nature and for inspiring others to protect it into a lifelong career.
Ultimately, I want to spend my life outdoors, learning from the world and teaching others to do the same. The opportunity to continue my education and make a difference in conservation is something I value deeply, and this scholarship would help make that possible.

Music was a crucial part of my high school experience. I participated in all four band-related activities that my school offered; jazz, pep, marching, and concert band. During my senior year of marching band, I was appointed drum major by a council of staff members and given the chance to lead the marching band. For concert band, I played marimba. In jazz band, I played the drum set.
In between my junior and senior years, my band director, Mr. Bueter, nominated me for the 2023 Indiana Ambassadors of Music trip. Through an audition process, I was afforded the unique opportunity to travel throughout and play a concert in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Not only did I travel to new and exciting places, but I was also able to play instruments not normally in my repertoire, like timpani and xylophone. This fantastic trip gave me the chance to see music’s ability to communicate beyond language and culture. During my junior year, I participated in all four types of bands offered. I again played percussion instruments ranging from marimba to drum set. Not only did I participate in band, I was also a part of our school theater’s musical production of Little Shop of Horrors. I participated on the audio and visual technology team and worked directly with actors on fixing and tuning microphones.
During my sophomore year, I participated in all four band types again. That year, instead of percussion, I played baritone and trumpet. During marching band, I played baritone. For jazz, concert, and pep bands, I played trumpet. My freshman year of high school, I played trumpet. I participated in jazz and pep band for the first time this year, in which I also played trumpet. My participation in these musical ensembles during my freshman year were very important. The friends that I made in the band helped me through rough times and find a passion and purpose in music.
Not only did I participate in band, I actively listened to all types of music throughout high school, whether that be classical music for studying, rock for getting pumped up, or folk music to calm down. Music has also been a tool to help motivate and uplift me during difficult times and helped me celebrate accomplishments.
Throughout high school, music has helped me to find friends, work better in large groups, be a better leader, and discover myself. Although I am graduating from high school, I still plan to pursue music in college and maintain the passion that I have for it.
