My lifelong goal is to become a pediatric pain management doctor. Growing up, I struggled to find a doctor who truly understood and specialized in pediatric pain management, which inspired me to make a difference for children facing similar challenges. I want to provide compassionate care and ensure that they have access to the support and treatment they deserve. I am pursuing my nursing degree at Lewis University and plan to attend medical school after graduating from college. This path will not only strengthen my clinical skills but also amplify my understanding of patient care. I am an extremely compassionate, empathetic, determined, and trustworthy individual who is deeply passionate about helping others, especially children. My personal experiences have shaped my drive to advocate for patients in pain and to create meaningful change in pediatric healthcare. I want to make a difference in people's lives-I want to be the doctor that I never had growing up.

Mental health and suicide prevention are significant topics among people my age because many teens and young adults are facing overwhelming pressures. Social media, academic expectations, financial stress, major life transitions, and relationships all contribute to anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. Even though mental health struggles are common, most people feel afraid to talk about them, making open conversations, suicide-prevention resources, and awareness more important than ever.
My own experiences with mental health and suicide, especially while facing Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, Gastroparesis, an Arteriovenous Malformation, chronic migraines, anxiety, depression, ADHD, years of doctor appointments, surgeries, medications, and therapies, have profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Living with chronic illnesses has forced me to grow up quickly and understand the weight of pain both physically and emotionally, in a way many people my age never have to.
These experiences have shaped the way I see myself, people around me, and the future I want to build. Going through difficult moments has taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of checking in on others, communicating openly, and recognizing when support is needed. Throughout my health journey, I often felt unseen, unheard, and mistreated as if my pain and experiences were not real. When dealing with daily pain, endless medical tests, and doctors who often dismiss or misunderstand you, it becomes easy to feel invisible and hopeless. This worsened my mental health, making daily tasks unbearable and, at times, not worth living for. Facing self-harm and suicidal thoughts during some of my darkest moments opened my eyes to how essential support, early intervention, and understanding truly are. I now believe deeply that every person deserves to feel heard, validated, and cared for.
My struggles have transformed my relationships and taught me to value people who show up consistently, listen without judgment, and show support through good and bad days. I also learned to distance myself from people who brought me down, struggled or failed to understand the seriousness of my mental health. At the same time, my experiences have made me a more empathetic and understanding individual. These experiences have helped me build deeper, more genuine, and meaningful connections with people whom I trust. I'm also more aware of how much someone's inner world can be completely different from what they show on the outside, because people fight their battles silently. I strive to be someone who listens without judgment and notices when someone is struggling.
Most importantly, everything that I have encountered has greatly influenced my career aspirations. Growing up, I struggled to find a doctor who truly understood and specialized in pediatric pain management, which inspired me to make a difference for children facing similar challenges. My goal is to work in pediatric pain management, combining my nursing education with my plan to attend medical school after college. I want to be the healthcare provider that I never had growing up-the one who listens, believes, and genuinely cares. My personal experiences have shaped my drive to advocate for patients in pain, create a meaningful change in pediatric healthcare, and make sure no child feels ignored or alone in their pain. My personal journey has shown me how powerful it is when a doctor truly listens to you, believes you, and treats you with empathy.
Overall, mental health and suicide prevention matter deeply to me because I know how much they affect people's lives, including my own. They shaped who I am today, how I connect with others, and the kind of impact I want to make in the world.
Ellen Melinda Smith Odeh Scholarship
WinnerSome of the biggest challenges that I have faced have been living with multiple medical conditions, including Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM), chronic headaches, Gastroparesis, ADHD, anxiety, and depression. These experiences were incredibly difficult to conquer and live with, but they also shaped who I am today and inspired my dream of becoming a nurse to help others.
Like Ellen Melinda, my health journey has been filled with obstacles that have tested my strength and perseverance. There were times when I felt that my diagnosis defined me as a person, when it seemed easier to give up than keep pushing forward. Yet, stories like Ellen's remind me that resilience and purpose can turn pain into something meaningful. Ellen's determination to pursue nursing despite her own health challenges shows that compassion and perseverance can shine even in the face of hardship. Her story gives me hope that I can also turn my struggles into a way to help others.

Like Ellen, I want to use my journey as a source of strength and empathy to uplift others rather than a limitation.
Ellen Melinda's story deeply resonates with me because, like her, I know firsthand what it feels like to face obstacles that others might see as impossible to overcome. Her legacy reminds me that hardships do not define our limits-it defines our character. Her courage to chase her dreams despite her diagnosis continues to inspire me to never lose sight of my own. Her determination and passion for helping others inspire me to continue pursuing my dreams, no matter how difficult the path may be. I hope to honor her memory by continuing her mission: to help others, spread hope, and prove that compassion and determination can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
