Hi, I’m Micaela Wyche! One of my goals for the future is to give back to my community using my career as a platform to educate and inform. With a degree from college, I will improve society by providing justice those who have been impacted by violent crimes.
As an African American, I commonly see my peers question the law enforcement system. I love community service and advocating for others; therefore, with the information I learn in college, I will encourage those in my community to start caring for themselves and showing them technology can help them better their environment. Therefore, I'm currently majoring in Forensic and Investigative Sciences at Texas A&M University through the Posse Foundation, a full-tuition leadership scholarship program, to become a forensic scientist in the near future!

Greetings. I'm Micaela Wyche. I am a Benjamin Franklin High School senior in New Orleans, Louisiana. Growing up with a mother who is an informatics nurse always motivated me to pursue a career in STEM. As I grew up and discovered her career, this love for STEM fueled me to improve my community. With its unlimited potential, STEM offers innovative solutions to longstanding issues, especially those of my community.
My commitment to STEM arises from a deep-seated desire to contribute meaningfully to the welfare of those around me. I aspire to create positive change within my community using science, technology, engineering, and mathematics tools. Adopting a STEM career in forensic science is a calling to employ my skills and knowledge for the greater good, leaving a lasting legacy of progress and prosperity in the community I hold dear. My fascination with forensic science flourished from "The First 48," a television series chronicling real-life homicide investigations within the critical first 48 hours after committing a crime. Fascinated by the intricate forensic techniques and meticulous detective work depicted on the show, I became more interested in crime scene analysis and forensic investigation. Each episode ignited my curiosity, prompting my research about forensic procedures and scientific processes. As I immersed myself in the complexities of forensic science, I discovered a newfound passion for unraveling mysteries and seeking justice. Inspired by the dedication and expertise showcased by the forensic experts on screen, I dream of pursuing this STEM career, driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact in the field and contribute to the pursuit of truth and justice, by attending Texas A&M University and majoring in Foresnic and Investigative Sciences.
My ultimate goal is to become a forensic scientist and work for any police department's crime lab or the FBI. Living in the artistic city of New Orleans, amidst its prosperous society and vibrant atmosphere, fuels a deep desire to contribute to the safety and well-being of everyday citizens, including myself. Noticing the impact of violent crimes on our community has sparked a genuine aspiration within me to pursue a career in forensic science and contribute meaningfully to society, using my expertise to uncover the truth and bring closure to those affected by crime worldwide. Using a blend of science, critical thinking, and real-world application that can kindle curiosity for unraveling mysteries and seeking truth, I aim to make humanity secure worldwide. Embracing forensic science means embracing a career where each day presents distinctive challenges and opportunities to make a tangible difference in people's lives. Whether identifying perpetrators through DNA analysis, reconstructing crime scenes to uncover evidence, or providing expert testimony in court, we can't solve crimes or give closure to families without the vital work of current and future forensic scientists. Therefore, I will pursue forensic science to ensure that the guilty are held accountable and the innocent are acquitted internationally.

Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
I never liked change. For example, I've kept my favorite frog towel since I was two years old. I always get #2 colored hair for my braids. I always put lip gloss on before I leave the house. When nothing else on a restaurant's menu looks appealing, I always get a burger. Lastly, I've ordered the same Starbucks drink for four years: a caramel ribbon crunch frappuccino.
During my fall break in 2019, I reviewed tedious homework assignments on my kitchen table while my granny watched Judge Judy yelling at the plaintiff in the living room. Interested, I stared at the screen. A Starbucks commercial infiltrated the television, promoting their newest summer drinks. When the Caramel Ribbon Crunch frappuccino, a blended drink with buttery dark caramel, topped with more caramel, whipped cream, and crunchy bits of caramel sugar, popped on the display, I wanted to try it as soon as possible. Little did I know that the drink would not only be my go-to order for the next four years but also get me through the most significant obstacle I had faced thus far.
It was the summer, two years later. I was now fourteen, on summer break, staying with my granny temporarily in New Orleans East. One night, I decided to call my mom to talk about my upcoming birthday, her job, and how living with my granny was. We had a great conversation that night. However, that changed when she told me that she and my dad had divorced in 2014, just two years after they married. They couldn't tell me because I was too young. Although that's the case, I couldn't believe that, for the past seven years, I was walking around telling my friends at school that my parents were still married and that my dad was "living in Houston for his new job." Later that night, my dad discovered I knew about the divorce.
I will never forget his first text: "I'm sorry." After all, this was the first significant change in my life. I was upset that I thought my parents were still married, although they slept in different beds. I was upset that when I stayed at my dad's house in Houston, he introduced a new woman as his "military friend," when in reality, that was his girlfriend. I was upset that everyone around me knew except me.
The following day, I asked my granny if we could drive to Metairie to get my favorite drink. The first sip of the refreshment made me realize certain aspects of my life. The sweetness of the caramel made me realize that sometimes, in life, it'll have its sweet moment, robust with enjoyment. However, the saltiness of the caramel bits reminded me that life can have bitter moments you could never prepare for. However, salty and sweet portions make life what it is. Although an event or a realization can bring change to your life, it doesn't mean your life has to alter. It's okay to accept a transition in your life because it makes you stronger as a person.
Now, I'm seventeen. I still have my favorite frog towel. I still always get #2 colored hair for my braids. I still put lip gloss on before I leave the house. When nothing else on a restaurant's menu looks appealing, I still get a burger. However, although I occasionally purchase my to-go order, I've started to try different drinks that include lattes and macchiatos. I'm still the same person, but the events that happened in my life helped to shape me into a better one.

Greetings, I'm Micaela Wyche. One of my personal qualities is that I'm an amiable individual. Anyone who meets me for the first time always comments on the same feature of mine: my positive attitude. My easygoing nature and approachable demeanor create an inviting atmosphere wherever I go. From cracking a joke to lending an ear to anyone in need, I've gained a positive reputation at my school and neighborhood! In addition, another unique quality of mine is that I'm dedicated to giving back to my community in ways such as volunteering for my church's nursery. Although others may not love kids, I treasure the time I spend with the kids in my church's nursery. While building relationships with the kids, I'm also teaching them necessary social norms, including cleaning up, covering your nose when you sneeze, and washing your hands correctly. Lastly, I never succumb to peer pressure. As a high school student, it's challenging not to do harmful things, especially seeing others around your age doing them. Although that's the case, I stand firm in my beliefs and never fall victim to specific events, distinguishing me from others.
My foremost academic goal is to graduate high school with at least a 4.0 GPA. I've set my sights on academic excellence since middle school, especially with the help of my mother. My commitment to my education extends beyond the classroom, as I participate in many extracurricular activities, including the DEI Workgroup, Black Culture Club, and the basketball team. Achieving a 4.0 GPA isn't just about earning top grades—it's about proving to myself and others that anything is possible with steady perseverance. After graduating from high school, my subsequent academic goal is to receive a bachelor's in Forensic and Investigative Sciences from Texas A&M University. Driven by a fascination with unraveling mysteries and seeking justice, I will immerse myself in a diverse array of courses, ranging from biology to calculus, eager to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for a prosperous career in forensic science. Before graduating, I would also seek internships and research opportunities to gain practical experience and expand my expertise.
I aspire to become a forensic scientist and work for the New Orleans Police Department's Crime Lab. Depression, anxiety, and PTSD are examples of mental health struggles that can impact people daily. Due to the lack of treatment or even support from family, many people succumb to these mental health struggles. However, in a time of struggle, it’s never too late to start adopting ways to benefit your mental or emotional health.
One healthy habit I’ll adopt is getting more sleep. As a teenager, I’m on my phone for the majority of the day, especially before I go to bed. However, if I see an interesting TikTok or Instagram post, I will remain on my phone until 2 a.m. Sleep is very important because it helps you maintain skills like concentration, learning, and memory. Imagine you have a Pre-Calculus test at school after receiving only 5 hours of sleep. Because of the lack of sleep, you’re anxious about the test. You’re so anxious that you’re on the verge of asking your teacher to reschedule the test. However, you decided to push through this adversity. When trying to answer one of the countless writing questions, however, you realized that you were struggling to do so. You’re becoming stressed because this is one of your first summative assignments that can make or break your grade. You turn in your test, furious and upset at yourself for not remembering a basic concept that you studied for weeks. When you received your grade, which was a C, you were very upset because this was the lowest you ever scored on a math test this year. This is an experience that I had this school year because of the lack of sleep. The main effects of lacking sleep are anxiety, stress, and anger, which are all symptoms that I’ve experienced. Due to this, I’ll adopt the habit of going to sleep early. In addition, I’ll learn to control how much time I spend on my phone. This means doing other activities that I enjoy, including watching TV or reading a simple book, to replace being on my phone.
I will create a safe space for my friends and other students to manage their mental and emotional health by expressing that I’m always there for them. If people know that you’re an available person, they will most likely reach out to you for help. However, if they’re not the type to do so, I will make sure to reach out to them on my own. For example, I always ask my cousin about her emotions because she’s struggling with her mental health right now. I love her so much that I want to make sure that we both succeed in the future together. In addition, as a current member of my school’s student council and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) club, it’s my responsibility to assure everyone in my school feels comfortable in the environment. Branching off of that, I want to have my friends and family around in the future. Your mental health doesn’t just affect you. It also affects the people around you. Some of my family members on my mother’s side suffered from mental health issues. For example, my mother’s father committed suicide when she was 9 years old. Due to this, she grew up without her father for half of her childhood. In addition, she had to graduate and get married without him. It’s every girl’s dream to walk down the aisle with her father on her wedding day, but she couldn’t experience that. Therefore, I will always make sure my friends, family, and classmates know that someone loves them.
