Bio

As a diligent and compassionate person, I am highly motivated to excel in my academic pursuits. Despite experiencing painful migraines, I have never allowed them to hinder my determination to perform at my best. In fact, facing challenges like relocating multiple times has only made me stronger and more resilient. Such adverse situations have inspired me to take on new and challenging academic endeavors with enthusiasm. Helping others out is a passion of mine. Because of these passions, I aspire to become a pediatrician. Academics & Hobbies: - I took 7 honors courses, 2 AP's, and 19 dual enrollment courses (I took full-time dual enrollment my senior year of high school). - I recently graduated summa cum laude in the top 6% of my class (GPA: unweighted - 4.0, weighted - 97.25). - I took two years of ASL (American Sign Language) - I was invited to join the National Honor Society and Beta Club multiple times but was unable to due to moving. - I am a self-taught pianist that has been playing since the sixth grade. - In addition to piano, I love sewing, cross-stitch, crochet, arts and crafts, reading, and learning.

    I Can Do Anything Scholarship
I aspire to become a pediatrician and care for children through their pain and sickness, helping them heal and feel their best.
    WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
Being a soon-to-be first-generation student and a child of a single parent for the entirety of my lifetime, I hold the great weight of the significance of completing my education. Financial struggles moved me to four different high schools and eight schools overall. In addition to frequent moving, I faced poverty, occasional homelessness, and painful and debilitating ocular migraines. I persevered through to the completion of high school. Not only have I finished my long, adventurous, and sometimes quite challenging and overwhelming high school years, but I graduated summa cum laude from high school. I believe this to be my greatest achievement to date because I overcame the obstacles set in my way and did not allow them to hold me back from this accomplishment. I have learned I do my best not to let difficult things prevent me from moving forward or working to better myself. I want to use my unique struggles not as a crutch but as a way to keep me motivated and determined in my studies. I want to carry out my life goal and dream, not only to feel successful but also to help others succeed in pushing through their difficult times. I have always loved working with children, and helping others out, is a passion of mine. That led me to feel strongly about pursuing the path of becoming a pediatric neurologist. As a pediatric neurologist, I plan to give back to my community by helping sick and hurting children recuperate. Having personally dealt with ocular migraines since third grade, I understand the situations and experiences of some of these children and have a passion for helping them through that. I want to help these children feel their healthy, happy selves again. Also, as I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and molecular biology, I would enjoy participating in various research opportunities. It would be rewarding to help find cures for deadly diseases that plague youth daily. These kids have no control over the sicknesses that rid their little bodies; all they can do is hope that someone can protect them and bring them through this to the other side. I would want to be one of those someones. I would appreciate being someone that a helpless young child can look up to and expect to find some help from. Children are defenseless and seek our love, attention, and care to help pull them through their stressful circumstances.

Poverty is waking up early every morning, knowing that you must work until the only thing lighting your path is the moon and stars in the sky. Poverty is coming home with a half-empty stomach to lay on your air mattress because you did not own any furniture, including a bed. Poverty and homelessness are sitting at a rest stop with your few belongings and your cat in the car with you, unknowing of the next place “home” will be. Poverty and homelessness are organizing these things on a luggage cart and wheeling them into the hotel room you will inhabit for the next six months. Poverty is giving up birthday parties, special celebrations, and the luxury items everyone “has” to have. Poverty is eating repetitive meals because you can not afford anything different or more expensive. However, poverty and homelessness do not define who I am. Poverty and homelessness do not determine where I will go in my life. Instead of merely accepting that I have persevered through poverty and sometimes homelessness, I use these moments to remind myself why I must go to and complete my college education. As a first-generation student, I know the importance of an education and, even more so, a college degree. Growing up as the child of a single parent, I have seen firsthand the significance of working to attain and complete higher education. Although my mom was unable to achieve this, I am encouraged every day by this to work even harder towards attending and graduating from college. Due to financial hardships over the years, moving around multiple times is yet now just another part of our journey and our life story. I have attended four high schools and eight schools, in total, throughout my lifetime. Adapting to every new living circumstance and school situation has helped me develop as an individual. I have not allowed my struggles to stop me in my academic career. I graduated summa cum laude from high school, and I intend to work just as diligently to obtain my college degree. I have experienced hardships, such as poverty, homelessness, frequent moving, and ocular migraines, yet I chose to push through these times. I want to use my unique struggles not as a crutch but as a way to keep me motivated and determined in my studies. I want to carry out my life goal and dream, not only to feel successful but also to help others succeed in pushing through their difficult times.

That led me to feel strongly about pursuing the path of becoming a pediatrician or a pediatric neurologist. As a pediatric neurologist, I would contribute to the research behind the science and the why of how the brain functions. Children are defenseless and seek our love, attention, and care to help pull them through their stressful circumstances. As a pediatrician, I could help these children feel their healthy, happy selves again. Because of my firsthand experience with ocular migraines, I know what other people deal with when they encounter this situation. That is a big reason why I strongly consider becoming a pediatric neurologist. It is not only my passion to help others who have confronted similar challenges but also children who have other neurological issues. I want to use my unique struggles not as a crutch but as a way to keep me motivated and determined in my studies.

Filling vending machines is not the easiest thing, especially when met by hot weather and loads of heavy lifting. However, this was a typical day for the job of my mom’s blind friend we worked for. The hardest part of this job could be all the heavy lifting we had to do, but most times, counting the inventory in the machines was the most challenging task. First, we had to calculate the drinks needed in the “premium” machine. At this time, our blind friend stood in front of the Coke machine, placing his hand on top of each column of drinks and bringing his hand to the top of the space to feel how many soda bottles should add to each flavor. An even more daunting task consisted of his attempting to count each item in the snack machines. He made his most accurate guess about how many bags of chips or candy bars would fit in that row by placing his hands along each rung. Before creating a spreadsheet listing all drinks, chips, candies, and snacks found in the vending machines, it was very tricky and time-consuming to write each product out when taking its inventory. Once I created this alphabetized and categorized spreadsheet list, things became easier to count and organize. It meant less time counting food products in the heat and less time guessing the number of candy bars we had to keep from melting or the number of chips we had to cram into plastic totes. After we had an accurate count of every snack, drink, and candy, we could wheel everything from the warehouse to the vending machines with confidence that we had what we needed to fill them. Although this is something simple I created to solve a problem for someone, there is something I would like to invent if I had the necessary money and resources. Many people have heard of the organization Compassion International. But that is just the problem I would want to work to solve. The word international tells me only children outside of the United States are finding help for their poor living situations. Don’t get me wrong, this is great, but it does nothing to help children living within the borders of our country. Given the necessary money and resources, I would love to make a change where this issue is concerned. I would probably start with something as simple as distributing bags to necessitous children. I am not talking about places that pass out school supply-filled bags to kids in the summer. I am referring to backpacks full of personal hygiene items, non-perishable food, and, most importantly, hope. I want these backpacks to fill these needy and deserving children in our country with the hope that they can make it through these times and that things will improve. I desire to start a website for people to choose to sponsor a child or children with a monthly donation, similar to Compassion International. However, instead of telling users which country these kids reside in, they would learn which state or city they live in. I hope to choose the children to be on this website if they are on the free or reduced lunch list at school, their parents have made little to no income in the past years based on their tax returns, or they are in another situation which requires that they receive help, as well.

STEAM excites the inner child in me that eagerly wants to know how these different expanding, innovative fields merge into incredible changes in the world. I have been interested in the concepts involving STEAM even before the times that I understood what STEAM was or how exciting STEAM can be. Experimenting with things to see how they work and creating inventions for various reasons is enjoyable to me. It is incredible to know how experiments and explorations in science and technology throughout the years have positively affected our world. Groundbreaking science research has allowed people, such as pharmaceutical scientists, to create life-saving medications. New technological developments in engineering and computer programming with technology have led to the production of 3D printers that can create artificial organs and the technology to make bionic prosthetics. Math is an essential part of the equation that helps to tie science, technology, and engineering practices together. Mathematics allows people to calculate their observations and confirm their theories on many important STEAM projects. Because I am pursuing a degree in Biochemistry and molecular biology, I would enjoy participating in various research opportunities. It would be rewarding to help find cures for deadly diseases that plague youth daily. I could positively impact this field by involving myself in this scientific research to help improve the lives of many children whose bodies harbor deadly and debilitating diseases. I would love to participate in the massive opportunity that STEAM provides for innovative and exciting exploration and experimentation of supplying aid to those in need.

Reading books for me is not merely the steady movement of your eyes from one side of the paper page to the other. It is a teleportation device that makes you feel as if you are inside the minds and lives of the characters. Every conversation, every magical moment, every mysterious clue, and every new chapter brings a new sense of excitement and adventure to the reader. A flip of the page can take you to a whole new chapter. Better yet, a page flip can take you to an entirely new world. Some books you read have characters you can strongly resonate with; you seem to have similar personalities and ideas on specific topics and situations. Resonating with a character or storyline makes a book much more enjoyable. Resonating with a character or storyline allows you to find your strengths. Resonating with a character or storyline helps you to build on these newfound strengths and implement them into your identity as a human being. Fictional stories may be fake, and the journeys these characters embark on can be just as unreal. However, when you find yourself reading not only a book but a story that feels like your true life story, it profoundly affects your impression of these books. The characters found in these stories are not merely characters with lines to speak and thoughts to express. Instead, they are leaders, movers, and game-changers. If I wanted to be like anyone, I would aspire to be like these people. They may face many struggles and roadblocks on their path to greatness, but that does not stop them from persevering and their stories from being shared. I feel that I am similar to book characters such as these. Characters like those I have explained the attributes of are the ones that most resonate with me and my life story. I want to use my unique struggles not as a crutch but as a way to keep me motivated and determined in my studies. I want to carry out my life goal and dream, not only to feel successful but also to help others succeed in pushing through their difficult times. Not just reading great books but great stories have shaped me to understand that I am more than just a player in this game called “life.” I am a part of a movement of many people to help positively impact the world.

But, if you believe in your dreams and goals enough, you can push through the difficulties in life and make it through to the other side, sometimes even stronger than before. I have been resilient in dealing with horrible, sometimes debilitating pain that did its best to prevent achievement. I have been resilient in times of poverty and homelessness, convincing and reminding myself that things would improve. I never believed that my mom and I would get to the point where we were sitting at a rest stop with a few of our belongings and our cat in the car, not knowing where the next place “home” would be. My stomach feels nauseous, and the room spins a bit more as I sit up to examine what other school assignments I must complete by the end of that night. A big test is coming, but I can not skip any studying for the important day. I tell myself that I must push forward, no matter how difficult. With my head pulsating and eyes throbbing, I decide three hours later that I have exceeded my limit and must let my eyes finally rest. I must let my eyes finally rest from the strain and stress put upon them hour after hour, day after day. I must rest my eyes and mind on heading toward my lifelong goal. After much indecision and careful consideration, I have decided on my dream career. I have always loved working with children, and helping others out, is a passion of mine. That led me to feel strongly about pursuing the path of becoming a pediatrician. As a pediatrician, I plan to give back to my community by helping sick and hurting children recuperate. Volunteering is another passion of mine. Whether this includes helping out at children's homes or in a children's hospital, either is a rewarding experience. I want to use my unique struggles not as a crutch but as a way to keep me motivated and determined in my studies. I want to carry out my life goal and dream, not only to feel successful but also to help others succeed in pushing through their difficult times.

After much indecision and careful consideration, I have decided on my dream career. I have always loved working with children, and helping others out, is a passion of mine.
