Tom LoCasale Developing Character Through Golf Scholarship
Last year, I was introduced to a new form of golf at a local municipal par-3 course in Austin, Texas. I was taken aback to see unique characters in flip-flops, cut-offs, and condo residents playing with those who lived under bridges. Even though there were competitions, no one had any sort of malice towards each other while playing. If anything, they got more excited when an opponent had a good shot. I witnessed this sport as an opportunity to bring people from all walks of life together, creating a unique and diverse community, which inspires me to carry on its legacy.
As captain of my high school golf team, I’m working hard this year to eliminate the negative boundaries between genders and social status found way too often in the sport. My initial exposure involved expensive clothes, snooty people, and exceptionally rigid rules about etiquette. I was stunned by the exclusivity and toxic behavior expressed by the girls. The team acted as a hierarchy, which made many of the new girls uncomfortable. It created a negative environment that was not enjoyable to be around. This year, I saw the chance to give opportunities to students who might not have the funds or skills to play golf by standard evaluations. Rather than judging recruits based on score alone, I decided personality should play a part as well. Teams need players who are willing to work together and lift each other, not the other way around. I believe that creating a space for everyone to be comfortable in and encouraged should be prioritized for healthier mindsets. By creating opportunities for my team to bond, grow, and learn, I have successfully built an inclusive and positive environment for everyone to thrive in. I aim to build diverse communities that welcome all as I continue to increase my knowledge of cognitive science throughout the world.
My goal is to use the knowledge and insights I gain to change not only the golf course but also the world, into an inclusive and friendly place for all. I love golf because it's a sport that anyone can play at any age. This makes golf the single, most inclusive sport in the world, yet it feels far from that. I want others to experience the joy of hitting a 300-yard drive or celebrating a hole-in-one, even if it's not yours. There is so much potential for golf to be the most popular sport, and while I see its ever-growing popularity, there still seems to be a standard, as seen within my high school team. I strive to prove that an individual's identity does not determine what they can and cannot do. Golf is a sport meant to bring the world together.
Snap EmpowHER Scholarship
Hello, my name is Lauren Thompson, a dedicated student-athlete at LC Anderson High School. My vision for the future is to revolutionize the world of golf, transforming it into a fully inclusive sport that fosters a sense of belonging for all. This aspiration stems from my firm belief that everyone, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to participate in, enjoy, and excel in sports. I aim to do this by studying Cognitive Science and using my learned knowledge to change the way society perceives our social hierarchy. Where you come from, whether homeless or rich, should not determine what an individual can and cannot do.
What excites me about this career path is the unique blend of my passions and my purpose. I have always loved golf, from the complexity of the sport to the lessons it teaches about patience and perseverance. However, it is the chance to make a profound societal impact through this sport that truly drives me. I envision a golfing world that is not just open to all but actively embraces diversity, fosters inclusivity, and champions equal opportunity. I am committed to breaking down barriers and challenging the status quo to make this vision a reality. I want to create a ripple effect, inspiring other sports to follow suit, thereby promoting inclusivity and diversity across the entire sports industry.
In support of women’s empowerment, I have taken the initiative to lead by example within my own sphere of influence. As the Varsity Team Captain of the Trojan Golf Team at my school, I have made it my mission to dismantle gender-based divisions within the team. I have strived to create a supportive and inclusive environment, encouraging every team member, regardless of their gender, to reach their full potential. I believe that such an environment not only enhances individual performance but also strengthens the team as a whole.
Going forward, I am committed to advocating for women's inclusion and representation in sports at a broader level. I plan to use my platform and influence to ensure that all women, irrespective of their background or circumstances, are given the opportunity to participate in sports and to excel.
This is not just about making golf or sports more inclusive; it's about creating a world where every girl and woman has the chance to follow her dreams without being restricted by stereotypes or societal expectations. By championing this cause, I hope to inspire others to join me in making sports a catalyst for change, equality, and empowerment.
Hulede Collegiate Golf Scholarship
In addition to my profound passion for the sport of golf, I actively participate in several organizations within my educational institution. These include the prestigious National Honor Society and the altruistic Key Club. Being a part of these organizations has allowed me to not only serve my local community but also develop essential leadership skills. Furthermore, it provides me the opportunity to contribute to a cause that is much larger than myself. The inherent team-oriented nature of these clubs and the tangible opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals within my community is an experience that I find incredibly fulfilling. Apart from these, I'm also an esteemed member of the National Art Honor Society. Within this society, I take great pleasure in exploring the depths of my creativity and witnessing the creative journey of others as well. Collectively, we engage in various projects that aim to inspire others to express their creativity freely. After all, life is about more than just work and routine; it's about sharing passions, creating everlasting memories, and forming bonds. The friends I have made, the memories we have created, and the accomplishments we have achieved are the true treasures in life.
In my pursuit of higher education at Pennsylvania State University, I plan to delve into the complex world of Cognitive Science. The intricacies of the human brain hold a deep fascination for me, and I aspire to contribute to our collective understanding of it. My hope is to use the knowledge and insights I gain to change not only the golf course but also the world, into an inclusive and friendly place for all. I actively play at Butler's Pitch and Putt, a municipal course in downtown Austin, Texas. The community ranges from homeless people to professional golfers, which is unlike any place I have ever heard of. Everyone there is encouraging, inclusive, and enjoying the game of golf. I strive to create places like that wherever I go because it taught me that society is too judgemental when it comes to the backgrounds of any individual. Whether you are homeless or rich shouldn't determine what you can and can't do. Butler's Pitch and Putt is a prime example of this. My ultimate goal is to help create a world that is filled to the brim with joy, smiles, and positivity.
As I transition into college and beyond, I plan to maintain my active involvement in community service. Being able to help others, whether it's providing aid to the homeless, contributing to the building of community structures, or caring for animals, brings me immense joy. I am particularly passionate about initiatives that promote environmental sustainability and social justice. In addition to this, I aspire to mentor young athletes, hoping to give back the guidance and support that I have been fortunate enough to receive throughout my golfing career.
Being the recipient of the Hulede Collegiate Golf scholarship would significantly enhance my collegiate experience. The financial support would afford me the opportunity to focus more intensely on my studies and my golfing career, alleviating the burden of financial stress. As it stands, my family's income can only stretch to cover my academic expenses. Therefore, this scholarship would provide the much-needed financial support, enabling me to pursue my golfing ambitions while simultaneously earning a degree. The mentorship component of the scholarship would also be of great benefit, providing me with invaluable guidance throughout my collegiate journey. This support would undoubtedly assist me in achieving both my academic and athletic goals.
