Cancer can come in all different forms and can have various effects on people. Most recently I learned that my grandmother (nurse), was diagnosed with Myeloma. This cancer is a blood cancer that develops in plasma cells in the bone marrow. I remember asking, how can my grandmother, a nurse/my mentor be diagnosed with this? She told me that due to me being the youngest grand, she made the decision to tell me last. As she began to ask me various questions, and I responded with medical information that I had learned from school/training, she knew that I would be okay. She was also impressed how much I knew. It made me realize that it could/can happen to anyone. I knew at that point that nursing would be the career for me. It started stressful for the family, we had to learn how to support, educate, and take care of my grandmother. We each accompanied her to one of her many medical appointments. We then had to support the decision that she made, which was to seek treatment. We assisted her prior with, researching different treatment options and coming up with questions about the treatment that she finally chose. It was a rough time initially as all of her children, and grandchildren had hectic schedules. We knew that her body would be so drained, and her mobility would not be the same because of this cancer. However, we came up with a care plan to help her. That included who would take her to her treatments, other medical related appointments, picking up medications, house cleaning, and meal prep. Being able to talk or cry freely about their diagnosis may help them feel better. If they know they can confide in you, they’re less likely to keep their feelings bottled up. I think back and look at what has transpired over the past year, I knew that my career as a nurse will be the best for me. I want to make my grandmother proud. Being able to stand by her side, listen to her, learn from her medical team, provide continuous support, and a hand to hold, is all a part of being a nurse. This career path of nursing is for me. I know what it takes to offer care to someone who can't do it on their own, listen to their needs and wants, and offer them support.
