During my freshman year of high school, I faced significant bullying that profoundly affected my life. The relentless bullying and isolation I experienced caused me to question many things I had previously taken for granted, including my faith. Losing my faith was not just about doubting religion—it felt like losing a fundamental part of my identity and support system during a very vulnerable time. This experience was incredibly challenging, but it also became a turning point for me. I learned how to confront difficult emotions and questions rather than avoiding them. I realized how many people were going through similar things and how I could help and walk with people with similar situations.
This journey has inspired my academic and career goals. I plan to major in psychology and minor in religion because I want to explore how mental health and spirituality intersect. My own struggles made me aware of how complex and personal faith can be, especially when paired with psychological distress. I want to better understand how people cope with trauma, loss, and doubt, and how religion and spirituality can support that healing process. Through studying both psychology and religion, I hope to gain a more holistic perspective that respects the mind and spirit as interconnected parts of human experience.
Furthering my education by pursuing a master’s degree is essential for achieving these goals. Graduate studies will provide me with deeper knowledge and skills, such as research methods and therapeutic techniques, that are necessary for working effectively in mental health or pastoral counseling. A master’s degree will also allow me to engage with advanced topics at the intersection of psychology and religion, preparing me to contribute meaningfully to both fields. Whether I work directly with individuals facing mental health and spiritual crises or contribute through research and education, this advanced training will be critical.
Ultimately, my goal is to help others navigate the kinds of challenges I faced—whether through counseling, community support, or academic work. By gaining further education, I will be better equipped to support people in their journeys toward healing and understanding, just as I learned to do in my own life.
