Jason Choi Memorial Scholarship
Fitness has become a deep passion of mine because it represents the moment I took control of my own narrative. Growing up, I was always active, starting with gymnastics in middle school. I loved the discipline and the physical challenge of the sport. As I moved into high school, I transitioned into dance, which allowed me to express myself while staying fit. However, during the summer before my junior year, I was forced to stop dancing because it simply became too expensive for my family to afford. Without that structured outlet, I fell into a period of physical inactivity that had a devastating impact on my health.
During that time, I began to gain a significant amount of weight. The most terrifying moment came when I went to the doctor and learned that I was pre-diabetic. Being told that at only sixteen or seventeen years old was a massive wake-up call. It was a deeply concerning experience that made me realize I could no longer take my body for granted. I knew I had to make a change, but without the money for expensive classes or trainers, I had to become my own teacher.
I threw myself into educating myself about nutrition and physical literacy. I spent countless hours researching the right foods to fuel my body and learning which types of exercises would help reverse my condition. I eventually turned to weightlifting, which was entirely new to me. I taught myself the correct form by watching videos and practicing diligently, ensuring I was moving safely and effectively. What started as a clinical necessity quickly transformed into a genuine love for the process of self-improvement.
Lifting weights taught me that I am much stronger than I ever gave myself credit for. It wasn't just about the numbers on a scale or the weights on a bar; it was about the mental shift that occurred when I realized I could heal myself through consistency and knowledge. By the time I reached my senior year, I had successfully turned my health around. This journey taught me that fitness is not a luxury reserved for those who can afford elite dance studios; it is a fundamental tool for survival and empowerment. My experience with these health challenges has shaped my desire to help others, reinforcing my goal to work in healthcare where I can inspire young people to take charge of their own well-being.
Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up, my understanding of finances was not formed by bank accounts or investments, but by the quiet stress of a household where every dollar had a designated purpose before it even arrived. When my parents split, my world shifted instantly. Transitioning into life as the daughter of a single mother meant watching my mom juggle multiple jobs just to keep us afloat. My financial education did not come from a textbook; it came from watching her meticulously count change at the grocery store and prioritize rent over everything else. These early experiences were difficult, but they shaped me into someone who is incredibly resilient and disciplined. I learned early on that stability is not a guarantee and that it is something you have to build with hard work and sacrifice.
These financial struggles have made me realize that education is the only true bridge to a different life. As a first generation college student, I am navigating a path that no one in my family has walked before. This scholarship is more than just financial aid; it is the key that unlocks my potential. Without it, the rising costs of tuition, books, and living expenses feel like an impossible mountain to climb. My mom’s strength is my greatest inspiration, but her income alone cannot bridge the gap between my dreams and my reality. By removing the crushing weight of student debt, this support would allow me to focus entirely on my studies and my mission to break the cycle of poverty for my family.
I plan to use the financial literacy and professional skills I gain in college to ensure my future looks very different from my past. My ultimate goal is to become a Pediatric Physician Assistant. I want to provide vital medical care to children, ensuring that their health and well-being are never compromised by their family’s bank account. I know what it feels like to have needs that feel out of reach, and I want to be the person who makes life easier for the next generation.
Beyond my career, I am passionate about bringing education to underserved communities all over the world. I want to help people who lack access to the resources I am fighting for today. I believe that knowledge is the most powerful tool for change, and I want to empower others to build their own success regardless of their background. With your help, I can turn my family’s struggles into a foundation for global impact.
Julius Quentin Jackson Scholarship
Growing up, my world shifted when my parents split. Watching my mom transition into a single parent was a turning point. The emotional weight of a broken home was heavy, but it taught me resilience. Seeing her work multiple jobs just to keep us afloat shaped me into someone who does not take any opportunity for granted. I learned early on that stability is not always guaranteed and that you often have to build it yourself.
Financially, things have always been tight. Between rent and basic necessities, there was never a college fund waiting for me. My mom’s strength is my inspiration, but her income alone cannot cover the rising costs of tuition and books. Without support, the dream of higher education feels like a reach rather than a reality.
This scholarship is my bridge to the future. As a first generation college student, I am not just earning a degree for myself; I am breaking a cycle for my family. It would alleviate the crushing stress of student debt, allowing me to focus entirely on my studies and prove that your background does not define your destination. With your help, I can turn my family’s struggles into a foundation for success.
Jeanne Murphy Scholarship: Compassion in Action
I learnt compassion from the women in my life. Growing up, I didn't really have a male figure in my life that I look up to or go to. It was just my mother and her sisters. They raised me and I used to be sad that there wasn't a father figure in my life but I slowly learned that there is nothing like a mother love. Ever since I could remember my mother would tell me she loved me to the moon and back which as a kid I truly thought she could go all the way to the moon and come back and she would still love me. As a 17 year old young woman, I know now that my mother meant that through out all the hard times. She would love me. It didn't matter that we couldn't afford to get new school clothes. It didn't matter about the hard truths my father exposed to me. It didn't matter who made a mean comment about my hair. It didn't matter about that I messed up on a school presentation. The only constant thing that mattered was that she would love me. My mother's love felt like the most strongest and compassionate feeling and to this day it still does. The bond that we share allows me to feel comfortable to tell her things that I am too scared to admit to myself but I learned over the years that the only way to get to that level is to be honest. Being honest is the greatest tool to break through Barries and be able to experience compassion. That foundation of honesty is where my own compassionate actions begin. Because my mother and aunts chose to be real with me about their own struggles and sacrifices, I learned that compassion isn't about having a perfect life; it’s about showing up for someone else when their life feels messy. I exemplify this today by being the "safe space" for my friends that my mother was for me. When a friend fails a test or feels insecure about their appearance, I don't just offer empty platitudes. Instead, I offer them the same unwavering "moon and back" reassurance I received. I listen without judgment, creating an environment where they feel safe enough to be honest about their fears. I intend to continue exemplifying compassion in action by breaking down the barriers of perfectionism in my community. As a young woman, I see how often we hide our struggles behind social media filters or quiet smiles. I want to be the person who leads with vulnerability. By being open about my own mistakes like that school presentation I once worried overgiving others permission to breathe and be human.
In the future, I plan to carry this legacy into my career and my community by advocating for those who feel invisible. Just as my mother didn't let our financial struggles or my father’s "hard truths" diminish my value, I will work to ensure that no one’s worth is measured by their circumstances. To me, compassion in action means looking at a stranger and recognizing that they, too, deserve a love that reaches to the moon and back. I will continue to use honesty as my greatest tool, building bridges of empathy that ensure no one in my circle ever has to feel they are walking their path alone. My mother’s love was my survival; now, I want my compassion to be someone else’s strength.
