I am a first-generation Black woman with aspirations to be a genetic researcher! I am particularly interested in molecular genetics, as I want to determine and understand how certain genetic changes cause. Molecular genetics can help aid the search for treatments and cures of diseases. I observed the benefits of molecular genetics when my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. My family was extremely nervous about finding a treatment that would effectively rid her of her cancer. Thankfully, her oncologists found a treatment that not only made her feel better, but also rid her of the cancerous cells for 2 years. Despite this story ending on a sour note, I’m thankful for the time I got to spend with my grandmother.
What if there wasn’t a treatment, though? Without the treatments that we have now, my grandmother would not have been able to cross off her bucket list. This is why molecular genetics is extremely important. Yes, we have a long way to go, but are continually making advances. If it weren't for this branch of medicine, more people would be walking around with health problems that have no cure or treatment.
Even though I am still an undergraduate student, I have worked as a lab assistant in many of my courses, where I had the responsibility of preparing chemicals for the professor and students. I have also participated in the Sense of Place and Wolbachia Project research programs at Tarleton State. I want to want to help the population by discovering new treatment and cures for various disease so that everyone has a chance and a happy and healthy life!
