Daniel R. Torres "Complete Your Dream” Memorial Scholarship
I don’t intend to fulfill just one dream. I aim to achieve several dreams. My journey began in second grade when I first picked up a lacrosse stick. My coach assigned me the goalie position, and I haven’t stepped out of the crease since.
My family has dedicated countless hours, driving me 30 minutes each way, 4 to 6 times a week, to practice and games. With the commitment of both my family and me, I have been able to pursue this dream throughout my high school years.
As an 8th grader, I was honored to be the starting goalie on my high school team. That summer, I joined my local club team, which challenged me to become the best player and individual I could be. My hard work earned an invitation to join a national team, allowing me to compete back east against some of the top players in the country.
At my first national tournament, I realized I had a lot more work to do. So, I headed back home and began planning. I attended more practices and asked to work with the older team. This dedication enabled me to maintain my position on the national team for the next three years and earn a spot on the regional team as well.
I was a sophomore when I was named All-State Goalie for Idaho Division A. Junior year I was named All-State Goalie for Idaho Division AA. My goal is to clinch it one last time at the end of my senior year.
Over the past two years, I have dedicated my time to volunteering with younger players, focusing on teaching them proper techniques as well as how to be a trustworthy and supporting teammate and friend. One evening after practice, the father of one of the boys shared with me how excited his son gets knowing that I will be there. At that moment, I was reminded of my own experiences as a young player. I want to allow him to grow his confidence, as my family and coaches gave me opportunities to grow mine.
One of my many dreams is to be a first-generation college student and athlete. I have put in the hard work to hold a job, keeping a 3.4 or higher GPA throughout high school and continuing to practice being a better person and athlete.
I visited in-state and out-of-state colleges last fall, and it came back to my roots here in Idaho. I have been accepted to attend the College of Idaho and have been chosen to play for their lacrosse team. I plan on studying videography and marketing. I hope with this I can capture many amazing athletes who are creating and achieving their dreams. I'm so excited to see where this new adventure can take me and help me achieve the dreams to come.
I won't limit myself to a single dream but will always try to achieve as many as possible.
