Bio

My name is Brittany Heather Boyer from Madera, CA and the most important thing about me is I am a single mother to a beautiful 8-year-old boy. I work full-time, and attend Fresno State University full-time. I am passionate about photography, reading, writing and painting. I love learning, and I hope to one day be an elementary school teacher. My mother has encouraged me to follow my dreams, and she is a tremendous inspiration to me because being a single mother herself, raising three children and getting her Master's Degree in special education has opened my eyes to knowing that I can accomplish anything as long as I set my mind to it and believe in myself. My mother is a special education teacher, and my grandmother was one as well, and seeing them teach was one of the highlights of my life. Even though my grandmother passed away, I still have the privilege to witness the magic of teaching in my mother.

Education has shaped my worldview in many ways. Growing up I always had different careers in mind, a lawyer, an actress, an architect, but it was not until I was about 12 years old when I realized that teaching would be on the top of my list. My mother is a special education teacher, and my grandmother was one as well, and seeing them teach was one of the highlights of my life. Even though my grandmother passed away, I still have the privilege to witness the magic of teaching in my mother. I believe education is extremely important and everyone should have an equal opportunity to receive it. I have seen first hand how low-income students struggle to receive adequate education and it is heartbreaking. Some of my mother's students would not show up to school because they had no way of getting there or children showing up to school dirty because there was no running water in their home. I grew up with a single mother of three girls, and we were on food stamps to help put food on the table, but she made sure that we had an education because she knew how important it was. My mom was perusing her liberal studies degree all while working full-time and going to Fresno State full-time. She worked so hard and I was able to see that and I truly believe she is the reason I have such a positive view on education. She was able to get her Master's degree and she ended up making a better life for all of us because of it. As I grew up I realized I had the power to get a higher education as well. I went to college a year after graduating high school and I started my higher educational journey. I have had the most amazing professors and I have learned a great deal and it has broadened my vocabulary, math skills, social skills, and I feel a lot more confident than I ever did before, and that is all because I am able to have an education. The only thing that has been difficult in achieving my dream of graduating is how expensive it can be. Raising a son by myself, working full-time to make ends meet, all while attending Fresno State, has been difficult financially, but I know by gaining my Bachelor's Degree in English Education, it will all be worth it in the end.

My mother is a special education teacher, and my grandmother was one as well, and seeing them teach was one of the highlights of my life. Even though my grandmother passed away, I still have the privilege to witness the magic of teaching in my mother. Of course, as I got older, plans seemed to shift. I met a boy during the middle of my college experience, and I packed up and moved to Oceanside in the blink of an eye. It was during this time I became pregnant, and a college education seemed like a distant memory. I soon realized I was in an emotionally abusive relationship by being ostracized from my friends and family, as well as an education and employment. I soon realized the best decision for my son and I was to move back home and look towards a better and brighter future. It was when I moved back home that I realized I needed and wanted to go back to school to finish what I started. I thought choosing a fast career would help me to be financially independent, but I realized after receiving my medical coding certificate, I was not going to be able to give my son the life he and I deserved. I continued to work full-time and started my path to becoming a high school English teacher and it was the best decision I have made academically. Although it has been hard living paycheck to paycheck, I love reading and writing, and I knew my purpose was to become an English teacher. I am now pursuing that goal and I could not be happier. I will use my higher education to give my son the life he deserves. I want him to be involved in sports and fun activities with his friends, and graduating with my bachelors in English education will make that dream come true.

The changes I would make would be supporting each other, as well as keeping my community clean and helping out in any way I can. Whether it comes to anti bullying or helping the homeless, they both are issues that need to be addressed. During Thanksgiving 2015, my friends and I put on a private Thanksgiving fundraiser to help the homeless in Madera and Fresno, California. We all came together to feed the homeless of Madera and raise money for the Poverello House in Fresno, California. We rented out a space at Rotary Park in Madera to cook and set up the food. We handed out and posted flyers throughout Madera and for those who could not make it from the lack of transportation, we drove around finding the homeless and dropped off meals to them. This was such a humbling experience that I wish to be a part of someday soon. We raised about $2000.00 for the Poverello House and had many blankets and clothes donated as well. When I was younger I was a part of the Interact Club of Madera where we helped our community at various fundraisers and events. Bullying is a big problem in my community as well. Being a substitute teacher, I see kids being bullied and I am so glad that I can defend the children this happens too. My name is Brittany Boyer and I am a single mom to a beautiful 8-year-old boy. I work full-time, as well as going to school full-time. My vision for the future is to give a good life to my son, and helping out my community in any way possible. I live in Madera, CA where there is a lot of poverty and I would love the opportunity to give back in any way I can. I want to start helping the homeless in Madera more, whether it is making them a plate of food or giving them blankets, it will help make their lives a little better. By doing this I can also show my son that it is important to help people in need. I have always showed my son the positive ways to treat people and I see that in him everyday. Being a good person and helping out in our community will impact his future tremendously, it will make our community a better place to live in, and I believe he will always treat people with kindness. I believe I have shown him a better way to live by showing him all the things you can do to help out one's community.

Growing up I always had different careers in mind, a lawyer, an actress, an architect, even a dolphin trainer, but it was not until I was about 12 years old when I realized that teaching would be on the top of my list. My mother is a special education teacher, and my grandmother was one as well, and seeing them teach was one of the highlights of my life. Even though my grandmother passed away, I still have the privilege to witness the magic of teaching in my mother. I love reading and writing, and I knew my purpose was to become an English teacher. I am now pursuing that goal and I could not be happier. The most important thing for me as a teacher is to help my students become the best they can be. All students are unique and learn in unique ways and I would like to implement different ways of learning into my classroom. I want to create a classroom environment that is welcoming and accessible. I want my classroom walls to be inspiring to my students, and display famous works of art, seasonal decorating, and have an all-around good feel about it. I want my students to want to come to class, to be excited while attending my class, and for them to know they can come to me for anything. I want my students to know I will have an anti-bullying classroom and I will enforce it to the best of my ability. I was bullied as a child and I felt as though I had no one to turn to when it came to talking to my teachers about it. I want to be able to contribute emotional support to my students if they encounter such horrendous events. I am sure my teaching philosophy may change throughout my years of teaching, but my core values will not. Respect, trust, truth, and kindness will always be in the center of my teaching. I want my students to know making mistakes is a part of life and we always have room to learn and grow. I am excited about what lies ahead, and I cannot wait to show my students learning can be fun, and not just work. I want my students to enjoy reading and writing as much as I do. I want my students to know they can come to me with their problems so I can help them reach their fullest potential when it comes to their education and future endeavors.

All students are unique and learn in unique ways and I would like to implement different ways of learning into my classroom. I want to create a classroom environment that is welcoming and accessible. I want my students to want to come to class, to be excited while attending my class, and for them to know they can come to me for anything, as long as it does not cross the line of professionalism. I want my students to know I will have an anti-bullying classroom and I will enforce it to the best of my ability. Making a community a safe and healthy place to live starts with our children, and as long as I can do something to make our community better, I will do it.

My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen because it is the ultimate romantic comedy. The story, at its very core, centers on Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth’s pride and prejudice of each other and how they must let go of those very traits in order to be together. The narrative centers around misunderstandings that are most likely the main obstacles in them being together. The most satisfying moment is by the end of the novel, we see both characters evolve emotionally. They eventually learn their true perspectives towards one another. The novel is excellent because the characters are so relatable. Elizabeth is an intelligent woman who loves to read, as well as staying independent in her own right. Elizabeth’s younger sisters are wild, easily smitten, and have fantasies of getting married to army officers. Elizabeth’s older sister Jane is quiet, beautiful and a very good sister to Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy is mysterious and prideful in the beginning, but in the end, his pride and disdain for others was ultimately a coverup of his true feelings. Ultimately, Jane Austen is a phenomenal writer. Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has romance and comedy, as well as having relatable characters. Additionally, the main character Elizabeth has a considerable love for reading, which is a very remarkable thing to do in a society where women were not truly encouraged to read. This touches home for me because I am a very independent woman who loves to read, and nothing would ever stop me from doing so.
