Hi! My name is Briseyda Maldonado. I am 17 years old and currently a senior at Melrose High School in the small town of Melrose, New Mexico. I was born in Hobbs, New Mexico, and raised by my loving parents and supportive grandparents. My parents were young when they had me, but they were determined to build a life on their own. From them, I learned independence, hard work, and perseverance. Seeing how far we have come as a family has been a true blessing.
At the age of six, my mom, my brother and I moved so she could pursue her dream of earning a science degree. My dad stayed behind working in the oilfield to support us, often driving hours just to spend time with us. Their sacrifices taught me the importance of dedication, faith, and family. They also raised me to pursue a relationship with Jesus and trust His plan for my life.
My faith has shaped who I am today. Although I have faced challenges in friendships and relationships, those experiences helped me grow and refocus on what truly matters. I learned to prioritize my goals and values, which led me to discover my passion for becoming a sonographer. I want to help mothers and babies while supporting families during important moments in their lives.
I attended Mesa Elementary, where I formed lasting friendships and learned the importance of surrounding myself with positive influences. After elementary school, I went to Yucca Middle School, but during COVID, I transferred to Melrose High School. That transition turned out to be one of the best decisions for me. Melrose offers more than academics it prepares students for real life. I have learned valuable skills such as managing finances, preparing for adulthood, and working toward my goals.
One of the things that brings me the most joy is showing love to others. I strive to make people feel valued and supported in every situation. I believe love is the most important first impression, and I try to reflect that daily. No matter what challenges I face, I know I can always turn to my faith, my family, and the people who support me.
My decision to pursue OBGYN sonography is deeply influenced by my passion for helping others and my personal experiences. Growing up, I was always drawn to babies and motherhood. Watching my mom and others go through pregnancy showed me the strength and beauty of that stage of life. I have always dreamed of having a family of my own, which further inspires my career path.
A major turning point for me was shadowing at a pregnancy resource center. There, I observed different stages of pregnancy, heard babies heartbeats, and witnessed emotional moments like gender reveals. Those experiences showed me how impactful this career truly is. Sonographers not only provide medical information but also offer comfort and reassurance to families.
Beyond my career, I hope to one day become a mother, possibly adopt, and create a loving, faith centered home.
Overall, my experiences, values, and passions have shaped my decision to pursue OBGYN sonography. I am driven by a genuine desire to make a difference by providing care, compassion, and support during some of life’s most meaningful moments.
Jared Ethan Trueba Memorial Scholarship
Hi, my name is Briseyda Maldonado, and I am a 17 year old senior at Melrose High School in New Mexico. I live in Clovis and drive 45 minutes each day to attend school, which has taught me discipline, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the opportunities I have. I come from a close knit family that has shaped who I am. my dad works tirelessly as an HVAC technician, my mom serves our community as a state food and health inspector, and my siblings inspire me to lead by example. Growing up watching my parents work hard and serve others has instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility, compassion, and the importance of making a positive difference wherever I go.
Throughout high school, I have been involved in a variety of extracurricular activities that allowed me to contribute to my school and community. I have participated in basketball, track, and volleyball, earning varsity letters in all three sports. While I may not have always been the most naturally talented athlete, I consistently worked hard, encouraged my teammates, and helped create a supportive and inclusive team environment. Awards I received, such as Best Teammate, Strongest Leader, Most Coachable, and Hardest Worker, reflect the effort I put into lifting others up and being a positive influence both on and off the field. Being able to inspire younger athletes and help foster teamwork has been one of the most meaningful ways I’ve impacted my school community. Beyond sports, I am active in my church’s youth group, where I mentor younger students and participate in community service projects. I have volunteered for local events and outreach programs, helping provide support for families and children in need. These experiences have taught me the value of service and the importance of using my time and skills to make a difference in the lives of others. Through mentorship, encouragement, and simply being a reliable presence, I strive to positively influence those around me.
Academically, I have pursued my interests with curiosity and dedication. I enjoy researching topics that fascinate me, including child development, the human brain, ocean life, and even sea turtles. My love of learning has led me to share my knowledge with peers through group projects and classroom discussions, where I aim to spark curiosity and inspire others to explore subjects they might not have considered.
In addition to these activities, I am involved in BPA and shadowing opportunities that allow me to gain experience in professional and educational settings while also contributing to my community. Whether it’s helping organize events, supporting younger students, or participating in service projects, I have consistently sought out ways to use my time and skills to make a meaningful impact.
Ultimately, the way I make a positive impact is through consistent effort, leadership, and a willingness to serve. I strive to be someone others can rely on, whether as a teammate, mentor, or friend. My goal is not only to succeed for myself but to lift up those around me and leave a lasting, positive mark on my school and community.

Hi, my name is Briseyda Maldonado. I am a 17 year old senior at Melrose High School in New Mexico. Although I attend a very small school, I live in Clovis and drive 45 minutes each day to pursue my education. That daily drive is not always easy, but it represents my commitment, discipline, and willingness to do whatever it takes to reach my goals. I believe that even the smallest choices like showing up every day shape the kind of person I am becoming.
You should consider me for this scholarship because I am someone who leads with determination, faith, and heart. I may not be the most naturally talented or the smartest in every room, but I have always been willing to work harder than most. I believe that effort, consistency, and a positive mindset can take you further than talent alone. I do not give up easily, and I always push myself to improve, no matter how challenging the situation may be.
My family plays a huge role in shaping who I am. I have three siblings who mean everything to me, two younger sisters, ages 8 and 7, and an older brother who is 20. Being an older sister has taught me responsibility, patience, and the importance of setting a good example. My parents have made many sacrifices to give us a better life, and I carry that motivation with me every day.
My dad works in Carlsbad as an HVAC technician during the week and only comes home on weekends. Watching him work long hours away from his family has shown me what true dedication and sacrifice look like. He provides for us with everything he has, and his work ethic inspires me to never take opportunities for granted. He has set the standard for the kind of man I hope to have in my future and the kind of work ethic I want to carry into my own life.
My mom works as a state food and health inspector, ensuring that restaurants and water sources are safe for surrounding communities. She is a strong, faithful woman who leads with integrity and compassion. She has taught me the importance of caring for others, standing firm in my beliefs, and always doing what is right even when no one is watching. Both of my parents have shown me that success is not just about personal achievement, but about serving others and making a positive impact.
Throughout high school, I have been involved in basketball, track, and volleyball. Sports have been a huge part of my life, not because I was the best, but because they taught me lessons I will carry forever. I learned how to be disciplined, how to work as part of a team, and how to push through challenges even when I felt like giving up. Earning varsity letters in all of these sports was not easy, but it was a reflection of my persistence and dedication.
The awards I received such as Best Teammate, Strongest Leader, Most Coachable, Most Loving, Most Growth, and Hardest Worker mean more to me than any scoreboard result. They show that I am someone others can rely on, someone who lifts people up, and someone who is always willing to learn and grow. Being recognized for my character is something I value deeply because it reflects who I am beyond achievements.
Outside of sports, I stay actively involved in my community and personal growth. I participate in youth group at my church, where my faith continues to grow stronger. My relationship with God is an important part of my life, and it guides my decisions, my values, and how I treat others. I am also involved in BPA, club soccer, and shadowing opportunities that allow me to explore my future career path. These experiences have helped me step outside of my comfort zone and prepare for the future.
I have always had a strong curiosity for learning. While I work hard in school, my passion for learning goes beyond the classroom. I enjoy researching topics that genuinely interest me, such as the human brain, child development, the ocean, crime scenes, and especially sea turtles. Sea turtles have always fascinated me because of how unique and complex they are, and learning about them has shown me how incredible life and creation truly are. This curiosity is what drives me to continue learning and growing every day.
My long-term goal is to pursue a career in OB/GYN sonography. I have always felt called to help mothers and babies, and I want to be part of some of the most meaningful and emotional moments in people’s lives. I want to provide comfort, care, and support during times that can be both exciting and uncertain. This career is not just a job to me it is a way to serve others and make a lasting impact.
What truly sets me apart is my mindset and my heart. I am coachable, hardworking, and always striving to be better than I was yesterday. I lead with kindness, and I care deeply about the people around me. I understand that success is not something that happens overnight it is built through consistency, sacrifice, and faith. I am willing to put in that work.
Receiving this scholarship would mean more to me than just financial support. It would be an opportunity an opportunity to continue my education, to pursue my dreams, and to honor the sacrifices my family has made for me. It would allow me to focus on becoming the best version of myself and to one day give back to others in the same way.
I am not perfect, but I am driven. I am not the best at everything, but I give my best in everything I do. And I believe that is exactly why I should be considered for this scholarship.
