Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
When I first found Chappell Roan I was captivated by her amazing vocals and her mesmerizing instrumentals but looking deeper into her lyrics I had found a way to connect with her. In her lyrics I had found that she was not only talking about her relationships but how different it is being one as a queer person. Instantly I found myself connecting with her music, as a queer person it can be extremely difficult to find a relationship in which the other person sees you for who you truly are and she expresses that so perfectly.
I remember feeling seen, knowing that there are other people out there going through the same things as me struggling day in and day out with life and relationships not just as a person but what society would deem and outcast. Her song "Good Luck Babe!" goes deep into this showing how most queer people won't even accept the fact that they are because of fear or denial and I feel that everyday I can never be myself truly without being cast out from my family I envy those who can but Chappell's music gives me hope. Chappell doesn't just talk about the ugly side of what being queer is like she also goes into the fun euphoric part of it, what it's like celebrating with others and truly making the most of what you've got. My favorite song of hers that explores this is 'After Midnight' she sings about how crazy things can get at night and the fun of just doing whatever and kissing whoever the point is just to have fun however you like and enjoy everything around you and that's what I'm going to do while I can.
Chappell is incredibly important in our time as she shows the accomplishments we as queer people can achieve given the right support and how we should be be afraid to be ourselves in front of the world. There have been so many amazing queer artists that have shown this in the past and now in the modern day where it's more acceptable, she serves as a milestone for us to look at how far we've come at being accepted. I know myself and many other teens and adults feel seen by having a rising star such as Chappell Roan enter into this era and showcase the incredible talent she has as both an artist and someone who's queer.
