I, Brionna Pollard, am a dedicated senior at Colleton County High School, where I have maintained an impressive 4.5 GPA. A proud member of the National Honor Society, I exemplify academic excellence and leadership.
My involvement in school and community activities is both extensive and meaningful. I have dedicated over 150 hours of community service as an athletic trainer, supporting the high school football team and gaining valuable hands-on experience in sports medicine. I have also served as the JV Color Guard Captain, leading her team to victory as state champions of CWEA. Additionally, I am an active member of the Future Farmers of America and the National Society of High School Scholars.
My contributions extend beyond her school. I volunteer at an animal shelter, tutor elementary students in 1st and 2nd grade, and actively participate in community parades. My dedication and service have earned me formal recognition from the Board of Education of Colleton County School District along with her peers.
I have a deep love for art, which was showcased when my work was featured in the Colleton County Art Show. My creativity and passion for helping others are hallmarks of my character.
Aspiring to become a professional athletic trainer, I plan to major in Exercise Science. Books have played a significant role in shaping how I think, feel, and see the world. I have always loved reading because it allows me to escape, gain new perspectives, and continuously grow. Every book I’ve read has left a mark on me, helping me figure out the kind of person I want to be. Through stories, I’ve learned resilience, empathy, and the value of knowledge—lessons that push me to make a real difference in others’ lives.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from books is resilience. Reading about people overcoming hardships, like in "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls, showed me that no matter how tough life gets, there’s always a way forward. Walls’ story taught me that struggles can actually build strength. Colleen Hoover’s "It Ends With Us" also showed me how difficult it can be to break cycles of pain but how important it is to choose a better future. These stories remind me that setbacks aren’t the end of the road; they’re just part of the journey. As I work toward becoming an athletic trainer, I will carry this mindset with me, helping athletes push through injuries and setbacks with perseverance.
Books have also taught me empathy. "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee opened my eyes to injustice and the importance of standing up for what’s right. But Sharon M. Draper’s "Out of My Mind" stuck with me the most. Reading about Melody’s experience as a girl with cerebral palsy made me realize how often people judge others without understanding their struggles. It made me want to be someone who sees and supports people for who they are, not just their limitations. That’s a huge reason why I want to work in a field where I can help people physically and emotionally, ensuring they feel supported in their recovery.
Books have also reinforced the power of knowledge. Malcolm X’s autobiography was a game-changer because it showed me how education and personal growth can completely transform a life. His hunger for knowledge, even in the hardest circumstances, inspires me to keep learning. As an athletic trainer, I’ll need to stay up to date on the latest research and techniques to provide the best care possible. The more I know, the more of a difference I can make.
Beyond my personal growth, books have shaped how I see the world and my role in it. "Between the World and Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coates gave me a deeper understanding of inequalities, making me want to help those who don’t always have access to the best resources. This has made me passionate about ensuring that all athletes—regardless of their background—receive the support and care they need to succeed.
In the end, books have played a huge role in shaping who I am and the impact I want to have. They’ve taught me resilience, empathy, and the value of knowledge, all of which will guide me as I work toward my dream of becoming an athletic trainer. I want to take the lessons I’ve learned and use them to help others, not just in sports medicine but in life. Literature has given me the tools to better understand and improve the world, and I plan to make the most of them.
