Growing up, I always loved science. At the young age of 8, I was fascinated by the way science forms a part of our everyday life, including breathing, seeing, eating and even photosynthesis. Forensic science involves using scientific principles and techniques in collecting, examining and analyzing physical evidence. My inspiration to pursue this career stemmed from the hit television series, NCIS. Intrigued by the science behind matching fingerprints, collecting body fluids for analysis and many other techniques, I did my own research about a career in forensics would entail. I quickly realized that while the show largely glamorized the profession, forensic scientists really do play a pivotal role in the criminal justice system. I also learned that here in Antigua & Barbuda there is a dearth of trained professionals in the field. Forensic science is a necessary field in Antigua. Too often, crimes go unsolved and criminals unpunished due to lack of evidence. I want to change that. With the burning desire to pursue this career, I was determined to follow this science track. In secondary school, I began thoroughly planning my future. The process was not easy. There were many times I wished I had guidance from Antiguan forensic scientists, but the lack of such individuals only motivated me more. I want to be able to provide my country with the forensic services so desperately needed. The main challenge I face is paying for my education. My parents have sacrificed a lot to help me achieve my goals and coming from a third generation country, I am proud that I was able to start the process. I am still trying to overcome this challenge and I am very confident and optimistic that I will overcome it. Matriculating to Towson University would allow me to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a concentration on Forensic Chemistry. Not only do I look forward to learning and developing skills in forensic chemistry, and other areas of science, I eagerly anticipate the many cultural, social and emotional experiences that complete the university experience. My goal is to become one of Antigua’s leading forensic scientists and ensure that a platform is developed for aspiring forensic scientists to receive the guidance they need. I intend to become an asset to the nation and, hopefully, the region. This road is not expected to be easy, but I am very determined to achieve my goal and make my country proud.
