Bio

I am from a small town Troy, in Missouri. My whole life I watched my mother go through school to eventually get her doctorate as of two years ago. My mother is my inspiration and constant reminder of why I am doing what I am doing. She would tell me every morning to make someone smile. That is what I want to do. I want to go into nursing and touch the heart of every patient and family I take care of.

      Ms. Susy’s Disney Character Scholarship
Every Disney character is influential, but my favorite is Cinderella. I remember the first time I watched the live action version. The goosebumps that spread over my arms and the way it made my heart swell with joy. It inspired me. Ever since, Cinderella has influenced my morals. In the scene where Cinderella's mother dies, her mother tells her to, "always have courage and be kind." Now, I live by that motto till this day. Ever since, I have included it in one of my English papers every year. It is just so beautiful how Cinderella was treated so terrible, but still held so much kindness in her heart.
      Holistic Health Scholarship
When I first read this question, I was a little intimidated. In my head, I felt like I had to be someone who goes to the gym everyday and never eats carbs. Then, after journaling how that made me felt, I realized that I don't have to be that extreme to be healthy. I believe moving on campus has been better for my health in general, despite what people say about the Freshmen 15. I rarely drive to places now. All I do is walk, walk, walk! The amount of steps I used to walk in a day do not compare to what I am walking now. Especially with the flights of stairs in these buildings. I also made it a rule for me to not use elevators during my time here at college. On average, I walk four thousand more steps per day. On most days, I average about fifteen thousand steps. On top of that, the food offered at the cafeteria is surprisingly better than the food I had at home. They have a salad bar, which for the most part I eat two salads a day. They also offer a fruit section, where I mainly eat an apple a day. I won't lie, but on the weekends I definitely stop by the desert section. Before I even moved away to college, I started to drink only water. It cut a lot of calories that I was consuming and I am continuing that here at college as well. Now, with walking more, I already noticed a slight boost in my mental health. Getting more blood to circulate to my brain has made me less moody. There are some days when mental health is a struggle for me. I began to miss home and my old routine. Sometimes I get lonely here on campus. When it all begins to become too much, I write what I am feeling down. Which to my surprise, feels like a huge weight lifted off my shoulder. Just with these five small things, I feel as if my overall health has benefited.
      Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
By the time I graduated high school, my community and I lost three people to suicide. Two of them I knew personally which made my passion for mental health grow even stronger. The unfortunate thing is that my high school is not the only school who have had to experience grief over suicides. They happen all the time. With these events, I dedicated my senior capstone project to mental health and what we could do to improve it. With that, I gained knowledge in the area that I wasn't aware of, solutions I wasn't sure helped until now. This experience changed the way I thought. It allowed me to feel comfortable with rearranging my priorities, so I could put my mental health first. It also allowed me to help guide my friends and family when they are in times of need. This experience also gave me the gift of understanding. Understanding the fact that everyone suffers from mental heath issues, some are just worse than others. Although, that doesn't mean it is any less important. As I go into nursing, I want to use my status as a neutral third party, to not only heal their physical wounds, but to help make their emotional wounds a little more bearable. With all that being said, I have made it my goal to make someone new smile everyday. My mother would always tell me to do that when she dropped me off at school in the mornings. It wasn't until having to see what mental health can do to not only myself, but my friends, that I started taking it seriously. You never know when your kind words will save someone's life.

      Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
In 2018, my grandma was living in my home under the care of hospice for colon cancer. My experience with the nurses between hospital visits and hospice care, was not so great. Once my grandma passed away, I vowed that I would do whatever I could to not allow another family to feel the way I felt. One thing a doctor or a nurse should always be able to say with confidence to a grieving family is, “We did everything we could,” but for my family that wasn’t the case. When I picture my future, I see myself providing care to not just my patients, but to their concerned families. When I was younger, my mom would always tell me every morning, “Make someone smile today.” I plan to carry that with me into the medical field. I want to warm the hearts of everybody I touch within the medical facility. As Henry Ford once said, “To do more for the world than the world does for you, that is success.” Most people say they want to be a nurse to help people. While that is true for me, I don’t just want to heal people, but to give them a reason to fight, a reason to smile, and a reason to have hope. I believe I am qualified candidate because I am a devoted college student, driven by passion and goals. To help achieve my goal, I will commit myself to effectively take advantage of this scholarship opportunity.
