So You Want to Be a Mental Health Professional Scholarship
As a sophmore studying psychology, I believe that creating a positive impact in this field requires a multi-faceted approach that combines education, advocacy, and hands-on engagement. Through my volunteer work with cancer patients and my involvement with the Doe Network, I have gained valuable perspectives into the importance of mental health support and the immense power of compassion. First and foremost, education plays a very important role in fostering understanding and empathy for mental health issues. As a student studying psychology, I intend to deepen my knowledge through coursework and research, exploring the intricacies of mental health disorders and the latest advancements in treatment. Armed with this knowledge, I will actively participate in mental health awareness campaigns on campus, organizing seminars, workshops, and panel discussions to engage the student community. I believe in the power of destigmatizing mental health through open dialogue. I plan to collaborate with campus counseling services to create safe spaces where students can share their experiences and seek support without fear of judgment. Additionally, I will encourage my peers to join me in challenging stereotypes surrounding mental health, breaking down barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help. My volunteer work with cancer patients has shown me the importance of providing emotional support during challenging times. I aim to apply this approach to mental health advocacy by volunteering at local mental health organizations and community centers. By engaging with individuals facing mental health challenges directly, I can offer emotional support and a compassionate presence that can make a significant impact on their well-being. Through the Doe Network, I have learned the importance of collaboration and networking. I plan to leverage these skills to form partnerships with other student organizations and local mental health initiatives. Together, we can host events that bring together survivors, families, and professionals to share their stories and promote mental health awareness. Such collaborative efforts can amplify our message and reach a broader audience. Additionally, I believe that technology can be a powerful tool in mental health advocacy. I plan to use social media platforms to share informative content, inspiring stories of resilience, and resources for mental health support. By leveraging the digital space, I hope to foster a virtual community that offers encouragement and understanding to those in need. One crucial aspect of mental health advocacy is advocating for policy changes that enhance access to mental health care. I plan to engage with local and national policymakers, urging them to prioritize mental health funding and support initiatives that improve mental health services for underserved populations. Through petitions, letters, and active involvement in advocacy organizations, I can be a voice for those who may not have the resources to advocate for themselves.

As I grew up from a disadvantaged community, I am reminded of the immense impact that giving back can have on the lives of others. Currently, I find my purpose in volunteering at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where I spend time with cancer patients, offering them a listening ear and a compassionate heart. I spend time with them and play board games with them. This experience holds a deeply personal significance for me, as I lost my beloved great grandmother to bladder cancer. With my current work, I try my best to positively impact the world, one life at a time. At UT Southwestern, I have been blessed with the opportunity to interact with individuals bravely battling cancer. My experiences have shown me the power of compassion and empathy in the face of adversity. My role as a volunteer is so much more than offering comfort. I also serve as a source of support and strength for those going through challenging times. Listening to their stories, sharing moments of laughter, and offering a shoulder to lean on has allowed me to witness the strength of the human spirit firsthand. The loss of my great grandmother to bladder cancer deeply impacted me and inspired me to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. Witnessing her strength and grace as she faced her illness inspired me to honor her memory by dedicating myself to supporting others on their cancer journeys. Through my volunteer work, I want to bring a glimmer of hope to those who may be experiencing dark moments. Looking forward, I plan to positively impact the world by pursuing a career in psychology and dedicating myself to supporting those facing adversity. I aspire to become an psychologist, bridging the gap between mental health and compassionate patient support. My vision is to contribute to the destigmitization of mental health and to help create an enviornment where those going through the most are not left forgotten. As I study psychology, I gain a deeper understanding of mental health challenges, like those faced by cancer patients and their families. Armed with this knowledge, I could better support individuals during their cancer journey, providing them with a compassionate and empathetic approach to care. Psychology would equip me with effective communication and counseling skills, enabling me to connect with patients on a deeper level and help them cope with their emotional struggles.
    Elizabeth Schalk Memorial Scholarship
As I grew up, I struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality disorder. I was an only child raised by a single mother who courageously fought her own battles with PTSD after escaping an abusive relationship. As I have grown older, my journey has been one of self discovery and determination to rise above the shadows cast by mental illness. Growing up in a single-parent home was a delicate balance of love and struggle. My mother, full of determination, carried the weight of her past trauma while doing her best to provide a stable environment for me. I saw her fearlessly face each day, determined to protect me from the scars of her past and the challenges ahead. However, the echoes of her trauma often reverberated through our home, manifesting in bouts of anxiety and emotional turmoil. Witnessing her battles was both aching and inspiring, as I saw in her a tenacity that overcame in the darkest moments. In these moments, I discovered the depth of the determination to be better and improve. As I entered my teen years, the seeds of mental illness began to take root within me. BPD cast its shadow, leaving me entangled in a whirlwind of emotions that I struggled to understand. The emotional intensity I experienced often led to conflicts with my mother, who, burdened with her own PTSD, found it challenging to fully comprehend my internal struggles. I lost many friends and went through many unstable relationships. I was bullied and often isolated in school, left out of many activities. Regrettably, financial constraints made seeking professional help impossible. Medication and therapy seemed unattainable, and I found myself relying on myself to find better coping methods. I I turned to literature, online resources, and personal reflection as my tools for self-improvement. I spent my days using what I learned to better myself. I picked up hobbies to cope with painful memories. My favorite things to do to cope with any negative emotions are painting, photography and volunteer work. Despite the absence of formal treatment, my mother served as a role model for me to continue to better myself. Her understanding, empathy, and willingness to listen became the thing that held me together. Together, we fostered an unbreakable bond, a shared understanding of the battles we both fought. Although my journey was difficult, I developed a goal to break the cycle of generational pain. My experiences shaped my future aspirations and I aim to become a beacon of hope for others battling mental illness. I am currently studying Pychology and Criminology, trying my absolute best to increase access to mental health resources for those who are underprivileged. By sharing my story, I aim to destigmatize mental health in underserved communities and instill a sense of empowerment in those who feel silenced by their circumstances.

    WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
My greatest achievement to date has had to be gaining admission into a prestigious research university. I am currently studying at the University of Texas at Dallas, which holds a #14 ranking in Texas. This accomplishment hold a place in my heart and symbolizes triumph over difficult circumstances I faced as a child. I was so proud of graduating high school top 5% of my class, while simultaneously earning my Associates of Science. This event served as a testament to my determination and grit. My experiences taught me that I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to, regardless of how impossible it seems in the moment. Looking forward, I am dead set on obtaining my Ph.D through pursuing my passion and hunger for knowledge. Growing up in the small town of St.Louis, my path to higher education was filled with challenges. I was raised by a single mother who bravely escaped domestic abuse. College was an uncharted territory for my family. We were poor and the lack of support meant that the idea of attending college seemed like nothing more than a dream. However, that all changed, as we scraped up just enough money to move to Texas, a state filled with unexplored opportunities. My mother wanted better for me, so she began going back to school, taking out thousands of dollars in loans just for a better life. Graduating high school with my exceptional rank and an early college degree was a defining moment in my life. This achievement not only displayed my dedication to my studies but also demonstrated my ability to reach for the stars. At that moment, I was taught an invaluable lesson that with persistence, hard work, and a hunger for knowledge, I could break any barrier that was in my way. This realization ignited a deep blaze within my heart, motivating me to aim for even greater heights in my academic journey. After graduating, I finally heard back from my dream school, letting me know I made it in. Never in my life, had I felt such pride in one of my accomplishments. This accomplishment has been a turning point in my life and has effected me everyday since. As I look into my future, I aspire to obtain my Ph.D in Psychology with an emphasis on Criminal Behavior. So far, my journey has shown me the cathartic power of education, and I am eager to continue to expand my understanding and knowledge. Through research, I strive to make great contributions to the field of psychology and public policy. By obtaining my Ph.D, I yearn to become a leader in my field and contribute to society through my expertise.
    Mind, Body, & Soul Scholarship
With my new semester starting soon, there is a lot to think about when it comes to college. I think my favorite part about college is its endless possibilities, where personal growth and knowledge are intertwined. I am excited about finally being able to be an active participant in my field and contribute to studies and research. The college experience is an opportunity for self-discovery, exploring, and forming deep connections with people with different backgrounds. I am excited about the opportunity to be exposed to many different perspectives. I embrace my opportunities and envision my sophomore year to be a transformative journey. As someone who faces the challenges of PTSD, maintaining a healthy mind is very important to me. I actively prioritize my self-care routine, which consists of a weekly spa bath with roses, candles and incense. Being able to take a day to relax and unwind is extremely important for my mental health and allows me time to myself. Taking a day to tune out stressors, listen to music and relax makes my week all the better. Additionally, I also practice time management daily to ensure I don't spend all day on my phone. Nowadays phones are always glued to people's faces, but taking time to breathe is crucial for mental health. Being in college can be hectic and challenging, making it important to nurture both my physical and emotional well-being. I love going on daily walks around my neighborhood and spending time playing with my cat. I also prioritize nourishing my body with filling and nutritious foods. I choose balanced meals to fuel my body rather than empty calories. Additionally, I know the importance of emotional well-being by seeking social connections through clubs at my school. I attend concerts for my school and club events to meet new people and fulfill my emotional needs. These activities provide me with outlets for self-care, allowing me to recharge and stay grounded amidst the challenges and stressors of school. With this upcoming school year, I open myself to opportunities with the hopes of making my sophomore year memorable. I am determined to maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul throughout the rest of my time in college. Through prioritizing self care, seeking support where needed, and staying tough, I am sure I can make it through any challenge. With an optimistic mindset and a commitment to personal growth, I look forward to embracing all that college has to offer and creating a fulfilling and successful journey.
    Your Health Journey Scholarship
My health journey has been an absolute rollercoaster. It has been a deeply personal experience, starting with the loss of my beloved grandfather. Since them I began my own path of personal growth, determined to shed the weight of obesity and cultivate a healthier way of living through daily walks and recreational dancing. I collaborate with my family to get rid of bad habits and live a healthier, more fulfilling life. In 2015, I witnessed the loss of my grandfather. He had succumbed to diabetes and lived a very sedentary lifestyle. After losing 2 toes, he eventually also succumbed to his heart, kidney and liver disease as well. After his death, we were all devastated. We grieved, fought, and went through a spectrum of emotions the year following. His unfortunate passing was a wake-up call for me, making me realize that our everyday choices truly do affect our future. I started doing little things, like cutting out soda and starting my morning with a filling breakfast. I wanted to strive for a healthier and better future for myself and my family. With help from my family, I began my journey towards the healthy lifestyle I wanted. We collectively decided to stop buying soda and buy more water. Our dinners, initially lacking vegetables, eventually because full of nutritious veggies like broccoli and carrots. Instead of mindless snacking, we practiced intuitive eating methods and focused on needs rather than wants. We focused more on our portions and emphasized on using smaller plates. Not only did this journey improve our health, but it improved our bond as a family, fostering a supportive environment. Not only did we focus on our diets, we focused on getting in our daily movement. I took my grandma on walks in our neighborhood, while my uncle Mike went to the gym. My mother took the long route to her office in the hospital and my uncle Anthony took strolls in the park. We all had our routine. Currently, I discovered my love for dancing. I don't participate in any clubs but at home, I go all out. Now, in my free time, I have lively energetic dance sessions. Although my intention isn't to exercise, it still has greatly lifted my mood, improved my endurance and helped me feel fulfilled. Dancing became a celebration for life and a tool of self-expression for me. Although I am not completely done with my journey, it has been a transformative one. Grief has motivated me to make lasting changes to myself to be able to live another day and make the most out of my life. As I continue my journey, I aim to honor my grandfather's memory by leading a healthy, vibrant life that would help inspire others as hes inspired me.
    Book Lovers Scholarship
If I had to choose any book, I'd choose Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Outliers is a remarkable piece that dives into the complex connections between success, human potential, and the many factors that impact our daily lives. As I continue my education in Psychology, Gladwell's work has had a large impact on my understanding of human development and behavior. From the complexity of gifted children, to the atrocities of human error, this work should be read by all. Outliers shed light on the concept of success as perplexities of external factors and not simply a result of individual effort or talent. I admire how Gladwell explores the idea that factors like culture, socio-economic status, and opportunities play a key role in achievements. Gladwell uses real-world examples, like plane crashes to display this idea. One of my favorite chapters is "The ethnic theory of plane crashes". In this chapter, Gladwell discusses how despite pilots having years and years of experience, culture can affect human error. In cultures where authority is greatly respected, co-pilots were a lot less likely to point out errors in the captain's judgment. This chapter is only one out of many that display how cultural disconnects could affect us in everyday situations. Having this knowledge would allow us to be more open and have more perspective in situations we may encounter with other cultures, making this book a very important read. Gladwell's Outliers also sheds light on the concept of cumulative advantages and how some people have a head start in life. In the chapter, "The Matthew Effect," Gladwell discusses how even small individual achievements accumulate over time and create large impacts on one's future success. What I love so much about this chapter is it challenges the notion that success is solely the outcome of personal merit, while highlighting external influences in shaping exceptional outcomes. This is a work that could teach us the value of recognizing circumstances. Lastly, Outliers highlights the role of psychological processes in skill acquisition. In the chapter" The 10,000 Hour Rule," Gladwell discusses how one can master any skill with 10,000 hours of practice. What I love about this chapter is the encouragement of grit and determination, letting the reader know that any skill can be mastered with the right about of practice. With all the problems facing society today, this chapter serves as a reminder that anything is possible.
    Lieba’s Legacy Scholarship
Growing up as a gifted child, I experienced being singled out for IQ tests and separated from my peers. My personal experiences have immensely influenced my career path. I believe that understanding the social-emotional well-being and intellectual needs of gifted children is very important for their overall development and future success. This scholarship would provide a platform for me to express my vision of meeting the intellectual and emotional needs of gifted children through psychology. Being a former gifted child, I can speak on the emotional struggles that often come with exceptional intellectual abilities. I was faced with feelings of isolation, as I had felt misunderstood by my peers. I was often bullied, even in high school. I was told I took things too seriously. Instead of spending my high school years at parties and events, I often spent it negotiating with principals and staff about improving school resources. I chose to study psychology, which has given me the opportunity of understanding the importance of early childhood and socialization. One of my favorite books,"Outliers," helped me further my understanding of the social and emotional developmental challenges of other gifted kids like me. One of my career goals is to work as a psychologist contributing to research involving the social-emotional well-being of gifted children. I want to help create a place where gifted children are not isolated and singled out, but rather included and embraced. By equipping schools and society with the necessary tools and guidance, I truly believe that gifted children can navigate their social environment and improve their emotional well-being. I recognize the importance of providing personalized support to nurture the potential of gifted children, as I grew up being a gifted kid. Utilizing collaboration with educators and parents, I will advocate for specialized learning plans that challenge and encourage gifted students, ensuring their intellectual growth and emotional fulfillment. Gifted children, in many cases, experience stigmas associated with their academic abilities. Instead of isolating and segregating them, I will help build an inclusive educational system that acknowledges and celebrates the strengths of gifted children. By actively boosting positive identification and integrating gifted education within mainstream classrooms, we can create a supportive environment that encourages all students to thrive. Drawing back to Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, this principle will encourage proper socialization of gifted kids, providing them with an overall improvement in emotional and mental fulfillment. When I was in elementary I was constantly pulled out of class to do academic tasks and perform tests on my IQ. This had a large impact on my relationship with my peers. This disconnect created a sense of isolation, as I missed out on coloring and team-building activities. Being seen as different and receiving special treatment led to persecution and sometimes bitterness from my classmates. The pressures of academic performance and the expectations that came with being labeled as "gifted" continued to complicate my interactions, creating a divide between myself and other children in my class. This continued to affect me in middle school and high school. Despite receiving medal after medal, I felt like it meant nothing. I was simply expected to be exceptional, but deep down I was one day hoping the medals would stop coming. It was hard keeping friends in school, as they often grew envious, even if I'd help tutor them. With all I experienced growing up, I don't want children to face that isolation. I don't want them to feel the heaviness of walking into a room and feeling hated. With my degree, and the help of this scholarship, I can help create an environment where gifted children can be who they are without persecution. I can create a world where kids aren't bullied for being different.
VNutrition & Wellness’ Annual LGBTQ+ Vitality Scholarship
Currently, I am studying Psychology and Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas. I plan on going into the research field and aim to obtain my Ph.D. I have an immense passion for making a meaningful impact on society through research to help improve public policy and eliminate stigmas surrounding mental health. As a researcher in psychology and criminology, I'm mainly interested in making policies and interventions based on evidence. In my research, I examine the underlying factors that contribute to criminal behavior to discover effective strategies for preventing, rehabilitating, and reducing recidivism rates. Through my work, I want to improve public safety, promote fairness, and shape criminal justice practices. Plus, I'm committed to fighting for the rights and well-being of marginalized communities in the criminal justice system. It's a big problem that certain groups, like racial and ethnic minorities, are overrepresented in the system. I want to dig deep into the social factors that contribute to criminal behavior and tackle any biases head-on. My goal is to make the system fair and unbiased. My goals do not end there. I'm also very passionate about getting involved in the community and education. I truly believe that knowledge can make a huge difference in changing society. I want to educate people about the root causes of crime, challenge stereotypes, and promote understanding and empathy. By giving communities solid information, I hope to start conversations, break down stigmas, and empower individuals to work towards preventing and reducing crime. I get how important mental health is in the criminal justice system. Lots of people in the system have underlying psychological issues that affect how they behave. So, what I'm trying to do is bring psychological assessments and evidence-based interventions into correctional facilities. That way, I can help the incarcerated with their mental health needs and help them get back into society successfully. Basically, my goal is to create a society that focuses on preventing crime, rehabilitating people, and giving them support. I use my education in psychology and criminology to shape policies, promote fairness, and advocate for mental health. I want the criminal justice system to be more effective and caring. As a whole, I have the education and passion for research to make a positive difference in society. Through research, advocacy, and volunteering, I want to tackle the root causes of crime, promote fairness in the criminal justice system, and improve the well-being of people affected by crime. I'll use proven methods, raise awareness, and encourage conversations to build a more fair and compassionate society that helps people in the criminal justice system rehabilitate and reintegrate.
    Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
My life has been shaped by the intersectionality of my identities as a black woman, survivor of sexual assault, and pansexual. Every aspect of my identity has played a large role in my life, making me who I am today. My identity has led me to have unique experiences that still impact me today. I was able to be taught the importance of determination, compassion and selflessness. Being a black woman, I have faced distinctive challenges in my life that have taken a toll on my self-esteem and well-being. As black woman in today's society, we are expected to be strong and determined all the time. Society always expects us to be "angry" and "aggressive", and any moment we break down, there feels like there is no space for us. Our feelings are often pushed to the side and attributed to being "ghetto" or having "no manners". These stereotypes affected me profoundly as a child, as I watched my mother never have time for herself. This difficulty has motivated me to advocate for mental health, especially those in marginalized groups. We did not have therapy growing up and it was never something in the cards for us, but I want to be able to create a safe space where individuals can have access to the help they need. Additionally, being a sexual assault survivor has driven me to follow a path of studying psychology was well. The trauma I have experienced affected my trust in others and disrupted my sense of safety. Due to this incident and constant domestic abuse, I was diagnosed with PTSD and BPD at a young age. However, through my journey with therapy, healing, and support from my friends, I was able to reclaim my body and my voice. This initially negative experience has allowed me to grow as a person and speak out for those who have yet to claim their voices. I aspire to bring mental health services to sexual assault survivors and those who haven't had the strength on their own to take back their voices. Moreover, I am also a pansexual woman in a heavily Christian family. I have faced challenges within my own family with my identity. While some of my family is accepting of my identity, others are not. The lack of support from parts of my family has led me to continue to hide in the closet. Although this experience of mine is hurtful, it pushes me even more to create a loving, compassionate environment for those who don't have it. I am a consistent advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, as I donate consistently. I would love to attend more rallies, but I am not yet open about my identity. With my degree, I intend to educate and advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and break down barriers that hinder acceptance and foster an inclusive environment. With all of my experiences as a black pansexual SA survivor, I strive to use my psychology degree to make the world a better place, improve lives, and foster an environment where mental health is a priority.

In my bedroom, I'd have a large black Mohagany Vampire-style bed with red velvet accents. My room would exhibit maximalism, as I'd fill my room with antique art and mirrors. My ceiling would be the same painting on the ceiling in Ljubljana Cathedral, painted by Giulio Quaglio. A dreamhouse would not be complete without a rooftop terrace. I would have an outdoor oasis with a beautiful waterfall. There would be a sunbathing station and a mini outdoor altar, where I would honor my ancestors.

Currently, I am working to solve the cold case of Anthony Brown in Mobile, Alabama. I seek to give families closure and contribute to the field of criminology. Spending time with cancer patients in a local hospital has been a humbling and eye-opening experience. In my journey of self-discovery and in supporting a close companion, mental health has greatly influenced my perspectives, connections, and professional goals. Personally wrestling with Borderline Personality Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has allowed me to understand the great effect of how mental health influences my values and relationships These encounters have fueled my commitment to championing mental well-being, dismantling stereotypes, and embarking on a path in psychology. My mental health journey has been quite a ride, filled with ups and downs in the mental health field. However, a bright spot amongst the chaos was my therapist Jessica. She truly became my guiding star, offering a safe and accepting environment where I could freely voice my innermost thoughts and feelings. Jessica's immense compassion, knowledge, and steadfast encouragement not only sparked a glimmer of hope but also planted a seed of faith in my capacity for healing and personal development. Finding appropriate care and encountering professionals who lacked understanding and empathy for the complexities of my conditions within the mental health industry has left me with some negative experiences. I experienced this in middle school, where my assigned counselor had an extreme bias against those with BPD. She constantly provoked me and took me out of my favorite classes. She often ignored my cries for help. These encounters have emphasized the importance of better education and training within the field, specifically when it comes to the treatment and support of individuals with BPD and PTSD. My commitment to creating a positive impact has been solidified through my encounters with mental health obstacles. I firmly believe that addressing mental health is not something that should fall onto one person, but rather should be a shared obligation. The lessons I have learned from my personal battles have emphasized the significance of empathy, kindness, and the strength of supportive connections. By advocating for change, my goal is to dismantle the obstacles that hinder people from seeking assistance and establish a mental health environment that is accepting and understanding. Creating a safe space for loved ones to express their feelings without judgment has been a crucial lesson I've learned in my personal relationships. Through this, I have maintained a deep sense of empathy and understanding for mental health. It has strengthened my relationships and enabled me to provide support to others facing mental health challenges by actively listening and validating their emotions. Me and my family were finally able to air out generations of trauma. My mother and uncle finally had the strength to get a therapist. Overall, we are much more open with our emotions. My desire to become a clinical psychologist has been inspired by my experiences with mental health. I am determined to provide compassionate and evidence-based care to individuals struggling with different mental health conditions, contributing to the field of mental health. By bridging the gap between research and clinical practice, my goal is to ensure that ALL individuals receive the treatment they need.

As a black woman living in Texas, I am acutely aware of the systemic challenges that the disadvantaged face not only in my state but across the United States. These challenges stem from deeply ingrained inequities in our society, which necessitate a fundamental change in how we respond to the problems faced by the marginalized. We must recognize the urgency of this matter and work collectively to address these issues. First and foremost, societal change is necessary because the current responses to the problems of the disadvantaged perpetuate cycles of poverty, marginalization, and limited opportunities. Disadvantaged communities, including people of color, face disparities in education, healthcare, employment, and criminal justice. These disparities are not isolated incidents but rather systemic issues deeply rooted in historical and ongoing injustices. To break free from these cycles, we must shift from superficial band-aid solutions to comprehensive and transformative approaches. Moreover, our nation's diversity demands a change in how we respond to the problems faced by the disadvantaged. The United States is a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds, each contributing to the richness of our society. However, the current responses often fail to recognize and celebrate this diversity, leading to exclusion and discrimination. By embracing a more inclusive and empathetic approach, we can harness the unique strengths and perspectives of all individuals, thus fostering a more harmonious and equitable society. Additionally, responding differently to the problems of the disadvantaged is essential because it aligns with the principles upon which our nation was founded. The United States prides itself on the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice for all. However, these principles have not always been realized for every member of society. To truly live up to these ideals, we must actively work towards dismantling systemic barriers that impede the progress of the disadvantaged. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every person, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to thrive and contribute to society. By changing our approach, we can create a society that celebrates diversity, promotes social mobility, and addresses the root causes of inequality. This requires investing in education and healthcare systems that provide equal access to all, implementing policies that address wealth disparities, and reforming criminal justice systems to ensure fairness and rehabilitation. Ultimately, as a black woman in Texas, I firmly believe that society must change its way of responding to the problems faced by the disadvantaged. By recognizing the systemic challenges, embracing diversity, and aligning with the principles of equality and justice, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. Let us join hands, challenge the status quo, and work towards a society where every individual, regardless of their background, has an equal opportunity to thrive and contribute to the collective well-being of our nation.

Through my mother's unwavering love and guidance, I learned to face adversity head-on. She taught me the importance of self-reliance, while also nurturing my dreams and aspirations. Witnessing her determination in the face of adversity has inspired me to embrace my own journey with resilience and tenacity. Tragedy struck again when I witnessed the death of my grandfather, a man who had been a constant source of inspiration and love in my life. Losing him was a profound blow, but it also served as a reminder of the fragility of life and the urgency to make a difference. My grandfather's legacy lives on through the memories, wisdom, and life lessons he imparted to me. His unwavering belief in my potential continues to fuel my drive to succeed and make a positive impact on the world. My upbringing, marked by absence, loss, and the strength of a single mother, has solidified my commitment to creating a legacy that transcends personal circumstances. It has fostered in me a deep appreciation for the importance of resilience, empathy, and the pursuit of knowledge. I strive to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations, breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes along the way. Through my journey, I have recognized that a legacy is not confined to grand gestures or monumental achievements. It is the cumulative effect of small acts of kindness, the ability to uplift others, and the commitment to leaving the world a better place. By leveraging my experiences, I aim to uplift marginalized voices, advocate for social justice, and bridge the gaps that divide our society. In conclusion, my upbringing as a black woman without a father, in the presence of a strong single mother, and witnessing my grandfather's passing has shaped my perception of legacy. They have propelled me to embrace resilience, determination, and the pursuit of knowledge. I strive to honor the strength of those who came before me and pave the way for future generations, leaving a legacy of empowerment and positive change. With this scholarship, I will further my education and expand my reach, actively working towards a future where the legacies of marginalized individuals are celebrated and their voices are amplified.

In envisioning a utopian future for the black community, one that fosters optimal mental health and social justice, it is imperative to acknowledge the interconnectedness between these two realms. Mental health and advocacy play vital roles in dismantling systemic barriers, addressing racial disparities, and cultivating a society where all individuals can thrive. By promoting mental well-being and advocating for equitable access to mental health resources, we can pave the path towards a brighter and more just future for the black community. 1. Promoting Optimal Mental Health: In this utopian vision, mental health care becomes a fundamental aspect of black communities. It involves promoting mental well-being through culturally sensitive and accessible services. This includes destigmatizing mental health issues, increasing awareness, and facilitating open conversations within families, schools, and communities. It also involves incorporating mental health education in school curricula to ensure that future generations have the tools to navigate their emotional well-being. 2. Addressing Historical Trauma: Utopia necessitates acknowledging and healing the deep wounds of historical trauma inflicted upon the black community. Traumatic experiences, such as slavery, systemic racism, and ongoing discrimination, continue to impact mental health. Culturally competent therapists and mental health professionals, well-versed in understanding and addressing these specific traumas, play a crucial role in healing and empowerment. 3. Ensuring Equitable Access: In this ideal future, mental health resources are accessible and affordable for all. This means dismantling financial barriers and ensuring that mental health services are covered by insurance providers. It also involves increasing the number of mental health professionals from diverse backgrounds, who can better understand and connect with the experiences of black individuals. 4. Advocacy for Social Justice: Mental health and social justice are inextricably intertwined. Mental health advocacy must actively address the root causes of mental health disparities within the black community, including systemic racism, discrimination, and socioeconomic inequities. This entails advocating for policy changes that prioritize mental health services, support community-based programs, and challenge the structures that perpetuate injustice. 5. Empowering Community Voices: Utopia is a place where the black community's voices are amplified and respected. Mental health advocacy involves creating platforms and spaces that uplift the narratives and experiences of black individuals. It involves fostering community-led initiatives, engaging in activism, and partnering with organizations dedicated to social justice. In a utopian society, optimal mental health and social justice go hand in hand. To achieve this vision for the black community, we must promote mental well-being, address historical trauma, ensure equitable access to mental health resources, and advocate for social justice. By fostering open dialogues, empowering community voices, and challenging systemic barriers, we can create a society that values and supports the mental health needs of every individual. This transformative journey towards a utopian future demands our collective commitment to dismantling injustice, promoting mental well-being, and uplifting the black community as a whole. Through mental health and advocacy, we can pave the way for a more equitable and just world.

Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
Alzheimer's has profoundly impacted my great grandmother and our entire family, leaving an indelible mark on our lives. Watching the progression of this relentless disease has been both heart-wrenching and eye-opening, revealing the immense challenges faced by individuals and families affected by Alzheimer's. My great-grandmother, once vibrant and full of life, gradually succumbed to the cognitive and behavioral changes brought on by Alzheimer's. The memories and experiences that had shaped her identity were gradually erased, replaced by confusion, frustration, and a sense of disorientation. Witnessing her struggle to recognize loved ones and perform simple tasks was incredibly difficult. The impact of Alzheimer's extended far beyond my great-grandmother's own experiences. Our family rallied together, navigating the complexities of caregiving, emotional turmoil, and the adjustments necessary to accommodate her changing needs. Roles shifted, and the responsibilities of caring for her fell upon the shoulders of family members, creating both moments of unity and moments of strain. The emotional toll was significant. We experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from sadness and helplessness to moments of joy and connection. We celebrated small victories, cherishing fleeting glimpses of her former self. However, the progressive nature of the disease constantly reminded us of the painful reality that we were losing her bit by bit. Alzheimer's also brought to the surface discussions about end-of-life decisions and the importance of compassionate care. We engaged in conversations about quality of life, ensuring that her dignity and well-being were prioritized. These discussions were emotionally charged but necessary, prompting us to confront difficult decisions and advocate for her best interests. While Alzheimer's has inflicted deep wounds on our family, it has also fostered resilience, empathy, and a commitment to raising awareness about the disease. My mother continued her education and became a nurse. I have dedicated my life to studying psychology and mental health. Through our collective efforts, we hope to contribute to research and support those affected by this devastating disease. In the face of adversity, we have drawn strength from each other and the love we hold for our great-grandmother. Alzheimer's may have altered her mind and our family dynamics, but it has also highlighted the importance of cherishing the moments we have together and supporting one another through the highs and lows. When facing loss, our family found strength in each other's embrace, uniting to navigate the pain, and supporting one another on the journey of healing.

Addressing these intersecting oppressions is essential to achieving meaningful and lasting change. I am dedicated to fostering intersectional perspectives in my work, recognizing the unique experiences and challenges faced by individuals at the intersections of multiple identities. As a student studying psychology, I am committed to making a meaningful impact on gender inequalities through my knowledge and actions. Here are several ways I can contribute to this cause: 1. Growing up in Saint Louis, I am no stranger to gun violence. In 2014, I witnessed the aftermath of the violent shooting of Michael Brown, which sparked outrage all over the nation. Even today, my hometown suffers from constant gun violence, having a 9-year-old being shot dead. My heart breaks every time I hear about a gun incident, especially in my hometown where I feel so close. Every other week, I see my cousin's post about losing another person to gun violence. Each bullet fired represents a story cut short, a potential unfulfilled, and a love extinguished. The pain reverberates through families, friends, and entire neighborhoods, leaving scars that may never fully heal. It's a collective loss, an assault on our humanity, and a stark reminder of the urgent need for change. The heartbreaking reality of gun violence compels us to come together, to seek solutions, and to create a world where lives are no longer stolen by senseless acts of violence. Currently, I am studying Psychology and Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas. I am interested in how Psychology ties in with crime rates and how they can be reduced. Currently, I am obtaining by Responsible Conduct of Research license and plan to use it to research leading factors that lead up to criminal behavior. Studying criminology offers a valuable perspective in understanding and bringing awareness to gun violence. By exploring the underlying causes, patterns, and dynamics of crime, criminologists can shed light on the complexities of gun-related incidents. They can analyze data, conduct research, and contribute to evidence-based policies aimed at reducing gun violence. Criminology provides insights into the social, economic, and psychological factors that contribute to the prevalence of firearms in crime. By studying criminology, I can advocate for effective prevention strategies, engage in community outreach, and collaborate with policymakers to raise awareness and address the root causes of gun violence, ultimately striving for safer communities. When it comes to extracurriculars, I participate in several clubs and activities. My primary hobby is reading True Crime articles. Being a psychology major, I tend to analyze behaviors and try to get a deeper understanding of how people function in groups. Another hobby of mine is art and photography. I love being able to relax and put all of my feelings on a canvas. It is a nice break from work and school and it helps me cope with my PTSD.

My name is Brianya and I grew up in Saint Louis, Missouri. Ever since I was a child, I grew up in a lower class area and often spent my days helping my grandparents. Growing up, my father was not present and I depended heavily on my mother. Without a dad, I looked up to my grandfather. He taught me all about life and his experiences as a child. I loved his stories and his jokes he'd tell me about his time in the air force. He would reminisce about the memories he had with his life long friends and tell me all about how hard he worked to give us a fulfilling life. Although my family was very poor, my grandfather would always find a way to make our day enjoyable, whether it be a cookout with family, or taking me to a park. In 2015, on a family trip, my grandfather sadly passed away. It hit me and my family hard, as it was so sudden and unexpected. Throughout the years, I learned about how truly hard my grandfather's life was growing up. From the harsh racism of the 50's to the abuse he endured at home, I learned so much about his life that made me understand why he wanted a better life for all of us. From that day on, I have committed myself to studying psychology. My grandfather was a prime example of the importance of mental health and therapy. In his time, there was no such thing as therapy and mental health, and even resources at the time were scarce. I want to give people like him an opportunity for a better life. I want to give survivors of abuse, like him, like myself, a better life. I want to be able to destigmatize mental health and help those who feel like there is no one else here to help. Currently, I am studying Psychology and Criminology at the University of Texas at Dallas. It is my dream to be a researcher and I feel an overwhelming duty to contribute to the field of psychology. I want to prevent the life my grandfather had to endure through research and innovation. I'm currently obtaining my Responsible Conduct of Research license to begin my journey. I am determined and constantly trying to learn more about how we function and what it takes to create a healthy environment for development and emotions.

My name is Brianya. I am studying Psychology and Criminology at UTD. My main hobbies are playing bass and playing video games. My favorite bands are Slayer, Korn and Disturbed. I am passionate about subjects like social justice, true crime, and cognition. When it comes to academics, I plan to finish my Bachelor's degree early and get my Masters as soon as possible. I also hope to get a Ph.D. by the time I am 23. I am an aspiring criminal psychologist hoping to work in a lab researching topics like cults, criminal minds, and factors that lead to serial killing. By the end of this year, I'm hoping to get an internship in psychology, which would really expose me to the environment and get some experience. I need this award because my family is low-income. All my life, I grew up with a single mother, working 2 jobs just to put food on the table. Currently, I am doing all I can to pay for college but going through school to get a master's is very expensive. I work in retail, but I also have 2 other jobs. I work as a caregiver for my uncle and I own a business making jewelry and spiritual gifts. All the money I earn goes toward school and paying off loans so I can get a good career to help give back to my community and my family for all they have done for me. I've been listening to heavy metal since I was a child. From bands to System of a Down to bands like Rammstein. Originally, my mom never knew I would become such a metalhead when I grew up. She thought I'd listen to "classics" like Motown, but I strayed far from what she expected. I picked up bass and started a small band with my boyfriend, where we practice classic songs from Metallica and Anthrax. I am a beginner with playing bass, but metal, as a whole makes me feel like I can express myself. Going to my first metal concert where I got to see Korn, made me feel like I belong. People of all different groups coming together and uniting over these bands just make me feel like I have found people like me. I was bullied a lot as a kid and often left out of activities, but I found comfort in music, especially heavy metal. Pantera got me through my long days. Cannibal Corpse helped me get all of my angry days. Soundgarden made my dark days bright again. It was always the little things heavy metal helped me get through.

    1. I am Brianya, and I am an aspiring Forensic Psychologist interested in research. The thing in my life that motivates me the most is my mom. I grew up with her working days and nights just to make ends meet. Now after 6 long years, she had finally graduated nursing school, making me more motivated than ever. If I could do anything with my life, I'd spend my life advocating for mental health. Growing up in a poor area, you notice that there is no room for self-care. The talk about mental health is heavily stigmatized and we as individuals are expected to suck it up and move on. Nothing has taught me more about the need to talk about mental health than my family. Years of unresolved trauma have affected my family for generations and I want to spend my life preventing centuries of generational trauma from passing down. I'd go to underprivileged communities and offer free group therapies and aid people as much as I could. I would also focus on minority communities as well. Growing up as a black woman in this world feels like you are not allowed to break down. As a black woman, you are expected to keep your composure at all times, otherwise, you will be deemed "ghetto" or "an angry black woman". I want to bring awareness of mental health to my community and to those who look like me, those who can't afford it, and those who feel like they are not heard. 2. The field of STEM is so versatile. There is so much to learn and so much we have not discovered. STEM is what holds this world together. Scientists, chemists, security analysts, and architects, all hold our society together. In the field of STEM, you are always learning something new and continuously have to keep an open mind with topics you deal with. With my job as a forensic psychologist, I could make a positive impact in a number of ways. I could help study criminology and contribute to the field to help spot and prevent things like cults, homicide, and suicide. With crimes, there are often warning signs before things take place. It may be the way someone grew up, mental disturbances, or even manipulation strategies. I want to help contribute to that field so we do not have to see modern-day Ted Bundys or Heaven's Gate cults. I want to help prevent crime at its source while simultaneously talking about how mental health plays an important role in our everyday lives. I want to be able to help point out warning signs of serial killers and aid in solving some of the biggest unsolved cases. Being able to point out little things would go a long way in reducing crime in our society and bringing attention to very necessary topics in mental health, like development and socialization. 3. My greatest challenge was enduring through high school while also completing my college degree. At the time, I was also doing volunteer work and holding down 2 jobs. I worked at Chili's as a hostess and founded my own business during quarantine. I had to take rigorous classes early on in my high school years, like AP Human Geography and AP Psychology. Classes like those truly tested my will and determination. We had loads of reading and notes to do and the content was intended for juniors and seniors. Starting my freshman year with senior level classes definitely posed a challenge for me. Luckily, I was also in AVID, where we did study groups and practiced planning strategies. AVID was one of the classes that held me together during my journey. We always had support groups and hosted tutorials every day, so we can have a better understanding of content outside of class. In challenges where study groups could not help, like mental health, I had to turn to other outlets. During the quarantine of 2020, times were hard for everyone. For me, I particularly struggled with depression and PTSD. I did not have access to any medication or counseling at the time. My coping mechanism was jewelry making and holistic work. This is when I got the idea of opening a shop. It helped me cope and stay calm during all the chaos. This shop has helped support me, even now. After such tedious challenges, I ended my 4 years off with an associate's degree in General Sciences and am now studying Psychology and Criminology at UTD, a reality I didn't know was possible.

“Promise me, when you get older, you'll buy a pink Cadillac for me”, and from that day I started trying so much harder in school. Since middle school, I’ve battled with mental illness and loss. I witnessed death, and things a child shouldn’t see. I had to watch my beloved grandfather die, which left me in a deep depression for years. I couldn’t focus on school, it was hard to socialize and I couldn’t enjoy it much. After years of healing, I remember a promise I made to my grandfather. Throughout my life, I have learned that I need to hold myself up to a certain standard. Not only related to school, but related to life in general. If I wanted to reach my goal and keep the promise to my grandfather, I needed to take note of my effort. I need to try my best at all times. Along with that, I needed to stop procrastinating. Since I know school can get hectic, I also need to leave room for self care, to prevent stress. Put yourself in others shoes and don't let a differentiating opinion divide the group. These aspects will help me understand other people, and be more compassionate and empathetic towards them. This will also help me gain a perspective so I can apply different lessons into my life. As I grew up, I began to develop different skills and talents that would serve me well in the career I was pursuing, Psychology. I discovered my love for art and my talent in it. I also noticed I was very observant and informative. I loved analyzing information and finding the reason for why things happen. I also happened to be talented in cooking, which turned out to be a hobby of mine. My aspirations grew as I set goals for myself. I want to be a psychologist and be able to help people. I also hope to provide for my family so we could both live in happiness and stability. I want to be able to travel and explore the world. I could experience the world with my family and not have a worry in the world. I don’t want to worry about tomorrow or the day after. I want to be carefree and live life to the fullest. Just like anyone, I have bad habits, flaws, weaknesses I need to overcome to become a better person. I tend to have horrible self-esteem. It’s hard for me to believe in myself and my abilities, which does slow me down at times. I also tend to be very sensitive when it comes to criticism, making it difficult for me to know what to improve on sometimes. Overthinking is also something that tends to hold me back. I would over-analyze assignments and essays to the point where it no longer pertains to the topic. The fact that I struggle asking for help doesn’t help either. I also fear failure, which is another thing that really messes with me. Although I have flaws like these, I have been working on them. I wholeheartedly believe that fixing these flaws and looking at them as a lesson will aid me in the future as a person and as a student.
