By learning the faults throughout the system, I could possibly successfully help somebody exceed through a system whose purpose was to destroy them. A bigger context of solving this problem could be by even establishing my own law firm with non-other than a majority black team of paralegals. With enough proof of rehabilitation and restoration, even the previously convicted can turn their life around by helping others who are presently facing the same situations. A problem I have witnessed that has been surfacing over the past couple of decades is discrimination and oppression continuously being a contrary discussion in America. Racism still plays a massive role in our society despite the efforts of many to impede it. I feel as though there are more prominent problems in today’s world that should be more attention than the color of people’s skin is receiving. Global warming, brewing pandemics, housing crises, or any other present-day occurrences I feel require more attention than something that should have been resolved years ago. Racism not only harms black people’s daily lives, but many African Americans or even colored people are falling victim to many biased decisions made by the people who are making today’s laws. This creates a sense of tyranny as political leaders have such control over things and people, who feel as though they are superior to others. This is leading to more people of color being arrested, abused, or even ignored by the system. Legal statistics accurately display the oppression against black people as biased leaders target people of low-income communities which house none other than the black community. This roots in America’s racist history as the nation was once divided by the color of their skin and were treated not even as human because of it. Many of the first police forces to come about were slave patrols, so the ties are uncanny. The target on black people has not come to a rest but is more hidden in terms of the sneaky ways our system still is in touch with unjustifiable idealisms. In all the ways that the systems are failing African Americans, these factors take a toll on mental health as well as develop severe PTSD. Not knowing when you would be the next person to fall victim to racial encounters is a constant thought in the back of many African Americans' heads. Hello my name is Brianna Terry, I am a 17 year old from Maryland who is interested in pursing law and becoming an attorney. The reason I wanted to pursue law as a child was because of the injustices I have seen, especially during the past couple years through the pandemic, on black people by law enforcement or through the courts. Viral stories like of George Floyd or Ahmad Arbery are some examples of modern time problems and reasons why I wanted to enter this career field. My inspiration truly comes from all of the protest and violence that surfaced as result. This idea of helping others sparked when as a child, my family and I were brutally harrassed by officers when we were the ones who called, all because of the color of our skin and the are we were in. I thought to myself, I want to make the world of law and legality a better place. As a prosecutor, it is not necessarily the same as being an attorney where you're advocating for another's freedom, it is about putting away the bad guy. My plans are to positively affect the community by putting away the dangers that lurk within. This means giving people who committed crimes like rape, theft, murder, kidnapping, etc., adequate sentencing and create safer environments. As a prosecutor this also means not abusing my power and giving fair consequences to offenders. Many injustices in law also appear in the court room and as a prosecutor, my goal is to create a fair court and to not automatically be the defendants enemy. To purse this career, it is going to take a number of courses, studying, books, and such, as law school typically is a lengthy course of study. Therefore, I will need all the help I can get financially to set myself up to be a very well educated lawyer who knows her laws and how to apply them to situations fairly. This can create a positive impact on the world as it is putting an educated female law student in the world who focuses more so on gun laws and safety rather than laws contradicting a women's body. I do dream about becoming a Supreme Court Justice but everybody has to start from somewhere. Working to fight the injustices in regular courts is where I want to start first. Winning this scholarship along with others can boost my inspiration as well as process in this course of study and create a very thankful person.
