Growing up in the Bronx, New York, I've witnessed the devastating impact of gun violence and stabbings on our youth. The senseless loss of young lives has left an indelible mark on our community. I still remember the day my friend, 15-year-old Junior, was shot and killed in a gang-related incident. His death was a wake-up call, and it sparked a fire within me to make a difference. I want to use my education to become a Forensic DNA Analyst, and I believe that John Jay College is the perfect institution to equip me with the skills and knowledge to fight for justice in my community. As a Forensic DNA Analyst, I will play a crucial role in helping law enforcement agencies solve crimes and bring perpetrators to justice. My primary goal will be to analyze DNA evidence collected from crime scenes and compare it to known DNA samples to identify suspects. This expertise will enable me to contribute to the resolution of cases involving gun violence and stabbings, ultimately helping to reduce the number of unsolved crimes in the Bronx. For instance, in 2018, 15-year-old Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz was brutally stabbed to death outside a bodega in the Bronx. A Forensic DNA Analyst played a vital role in analyzing the DNA evidence, which led to the conviction of the perpetrators. This case serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that forensic science can have on our community. John Jay College will provide me with a comprehensive understanding of forensic science, criminal justice, and DNA analysis. The college's renowned Forensic Science program will equip me with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to succeed in this field. Through coursework, internships, and research opportunities, I will gain hands-on experience in DNA analysis, laboratory techniques, and evidence handling. I am confident that John Jay College will prepare me to make a meaningful contribution to my community. Upon graduating, I plan to return to the Bronx and work with local law enforcement agencies to help solve crimes and bring justice to the families of victims. I envision myself working closely with detectives, analyzing DNA evidence, and providing expert testimony in court. My ultimate goal is to help reduce the number of unsolved crimes in the Bronx, providing closure to families and helping to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the community. By using my education to make a positive impact in my community, I hope to inspire other young people to pursue careers in forensic science and criminal justice. My education at John Jay College will empower me to fight for justice in my community.
