Hi everyone my name is Brianna Banks and I am from Richmond VA. I Attend the illustrious North Carolina A&T because I wanted to experience the HBCU experience while learning from professors and a community of people who want me to succeed. While we're on this topic of success, education is very important to me because it's vital in my life and career path to becoming a Dermatologist. I chose this field because making an impact and providing someone with confidence or a better quality of life completes me. Gratitude is important to me. I appreciate you for the consideration of opportunities and for taking the time to get to know me.

Despite being born with what the world might deem disadvantages, such as being African American, a female, and a part of the lower class, I used it all as motivation. Reminding myself once I am successful in my life/career I can show others just like me you can do anything you put your mind to no matter any circumstance. From a little age, I always pictured myself being in the medical field based on my strong sense of compassion and love for helping others. It wasn't until recently that I discovered the field of dermatology and how truly impactful it is. In today's society mental health is becoming a more prominent issue so to know I can improve someone's confidence and quality of life is what makes me wake up every day and pursue this career. The importance of self-esteem is undervalued and could potentially be a big factor in a person being happy/successful vs depressed/unmotivated. Ultimately I want to have my private practice in dermatology so I can give back to the community and those who don't have the ideal opportunities for the health care they need. It's important to me to run a business that isn't money-oriented and instead patient-oriented. A lot of patients can't afford dermatological treatments because insurance writes them off as Cosmetic and won’t cover the treatments. I want to be the lifesaver where people can come for affordable and diverse health care. The population of African American dermatologists in America is 3%, which I find is unacceptable because African Americans are the 3rd most populated race in America. I believe as a black physician I will be able to provide a better quality of care because I can relate to the patients by understanding our needs as colored people. All of my aspirations I mentioned came from the fact I've seen firsthand the lifestyle people in an underserved community live. I remember several times when my parents had to decide to go without certain medications, procedures, or doctor visits, so I can have the resources for good medical and dental care. I am dedicating the next 10 years of my life to becoming a doctor to fight for equality in the medical field and be a safe place or voice for those in need. When my life’s work is stable I plan to source internships and fund a scholarship of my own. I’ve always believed the cycle of giving is never-ending, and I have faith my contributions will inspire the next.

From a young age I always envisioned great things for myself. I was raised that god had big plans for me and I would contribute in making the world a better place. I can say this positive mindset has impacted my life and the goals I set for my future. I knew I wasn't only living for me but in addition, I'm living for my family and people who share the same skin color as me. I like to think selflessness is my greatest virtue and would contribute to a bright future.
Watching and feeling the emotions my parents went through to provide me and my siblings with the best opportunities they could motivated me. All my life they’ve worked hard, so I witnessed their dedication and strive first hand. It instilled those qualities in me, like being hard working. I always wanted and still want to repay them for everything they did for me. Failure is not an option. I wake up everyday with motivation to make my parents proud and support them by getting my education to flourish in my dream career Dermatology. I am the first in my family to go to college so everyone is rooting for me.
Witnessing society place limitations, talk down on, and judge people just like me: a young black woman, inspires me to excel through struggles. I want to show others of the same ethnicity that you can achieve your wildest dreams, as long as you put your mind to it. Majority of people like me are aware of stereotypes and the unfairness being black comes with. I want to be successful for all of my people, including being a role model to future children of color with goals and aspirations.
Lastly but of equal importance, self awareness is a key factor in how I use my experiences to plan success in my goals. If you take away all the distractions and others' opinions I always wanted to thrive for me. I know how intelligent, kind, and able I am, therefore I have set high expectations and goals for myself. I often use the expression “Everything in Life is Either a Blessing or a Lesson” to be thankful for my wins but also learn from my losses. I believe you must fail in order to succeed. I wouldn't be who I am today without facing all life has thrown at me.
