One lesson that has shaped my life is that setbacks do not define a person, but rather how they respond to them. After being unexpectedly laid off from my software developer role in 2024, I chose to strengthen my foundation by returning to college full-time. I completed my associate's degree in Computer Science at Northern Virginia Community College with a 4.0 GPA and will continue my education at Virginia Tech this fall. That experience taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of continuous learning. Throughout school and my professional journey, I have worked in a variety of roles that taught me the value of responsibility and service. From customer-facing positions at Starbucks, Harris Teeter, and Burlington, to teaching programming to children as a Technical Lead, and later developing software for a federal client, each role required professionalism, teamwork, and a commitment to helping others. No matter the position, I learned that meaningful work begins with understanding the needs of the people I serve. That commitment to service extends beyond the workplace. While working as a Cashier Associate at Burlington in New York City, I served as the store's top fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, helping raise support for blood cancer research and awareness. I also volunteered as a videographer for the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders, recording public meetings to help document local government proceedings and support transparency for the community. Although my role was often behind the scenes, both experiences taught me that meaningful impact doesn't require being in the spotlight. It requires consistency and genuinely caring about the outcome. At Virginia Tech, I plan to continue that commitment by joining the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Club and pursuing undergraduate research, with the goal of building AI-driven tools that serve real communities rather than only for academic interest. My long-term goal is to build technology that improves people's lives through reliable, thoughtful software, whether that means developing accessible applications, improving public services, or creating machine learning tools that solve real problems. I believe technical skill carries a responsibility to use it in ways that benefit society. Outside of school, I enjoy classical music, playing the cello, and exploring history and astronomy. Music has taught me patience and discipline, while history and science continually inspire curiosity about the world and humanity's place within it. The greatest motivator in my life has been my mother. She has demonstrated perseverance through difficult circumstances while always encouraging me to pursue education and continue moving forward. Watching her sacrifices has motivated me to work hard, remain humble, and appreciate opportunities that might otherwise be taken for granted. I hope to honor that example by building a career defined not only by professional success, but by integrity, service, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
