WinnerBio
I am a 17-year-old student who has had to build my life from the ground up. With my mother incarcerated and no stable home to return to, I chose to take control of my future instead of letting my circumstances define me. I transferred schools, balanced football and a full school schedule, and worked late-night shifts to pay my own rent, bills, transportation, and daily expenses. Through all of this, I stayed focused, responsible, and committed to graduating and becoming the first stable foundation in my family. My challenges taught me independence, discipline, and resilience far beyond my age. I’m not looking for a handout—I'm looking for an opportunity to rise even higher and continue proving that hard work can overcome any setback.

WinnerI am a 17-year-old student who has faced challenges most teenagers cannot imagine. When I turned 15, a few weeks later, I had to undergo a traumatic experience in which my home was raided. With my mother incarcerated and my father living hours away, I have had to navigate life largely on my own. This meant finding stability, supporting myself financially, and making sure I could continue my education, all while staying committed to my personal goals and responsibilities.
This past year has been particularly defining. I transferred schools to ensure I could finish my senior year successfully, all while balancing football, a full academic schedule, and working late night shifts to pay rent, car insurance, transportation, and daily expenses. My schedule often left me with little rest, yet I learned to manage my time effectively, prioritize my responsibilities, and maintain focus on my long-term future goals. I plan on going to college and majoring in business. My experiences taught me independence, accountability, and the ability to remain calm under pressure, all skills required for a business major.
Beyond financial and mental challenges, I have grown emotionally and mentally through the lessons of sacrifice and determination. I learned how to advocate for myself, navigate difficult situations, and maintain strong relationships, even when time and circumstances make it difficult. Football taught me discipline and teamwork, school taught me persistence, and work taught me the value of earning my way. Together, these experiences have instilled in me a strong sense of self and a commitment to rising above adversity.
In every challenge I’ve faced, I have learned lessons that will guide me for the rest of my life: responsibility, independence, emotional strength, and perseverance. I am proud of how far I have come and determined to continue striving for success. I am not seeking a handout; I am seeking an opportunity to continue building a stable, successful future. With the support of the Pete and Counsuelo Hernandez Memorial scholarship, I can take the next step toward my goals of going to college demonstrating that dedication and strength can turn even the most difficult circumstances into a foundation for achievement and opportunity.
The Pete and Consuelo Hernandez Memorial scholarship would relieve some of the financial pressure I carry daily, allowing me to focus more fully on my education and personal growth. I aim to demonstrate that young first-generation college students facing hardships can overcome their circumstances through hard work, determination, and resilience. My past does not define me; it motivates me.
