KC R. Sandidge Photography Scholarship
With my photography career beginning from a counter-culture like skateboarding my photography sprouted from inspiration and sources outside pf the traditional photography routes. I started in skateboarding videography and was quite disinterested in photography until my sophomore year and my yearbook teacher had no photographers and had a vacuum that needed to be filled. The first day I had my camera i took it to my local skatepark and took photos of me and my friends skating as well as doing promotion for my friends clothing brand. From this I've branched into concert photography of electronic music or punk music, sports photography, lifestyle, and portrait photography. Now I am taking photography courses at my local college as an early college high school student where I am developing film and learning traditional routes of photography while refining my craft. With no original formal training I developed my skills over the years to photographing for my local newspaper, school district, my own business, all the while remaining true to the routes I came up in. The ability to connect with people from so many different cultures and backgrounds and represent them as i learn more about the people around me has been my motivator for taking photos, and as long as I can I will continue to learn more about the people around me and represent them further.
Bayli Lake Memorial Scholarship for Creative Excellence
It is said that life often imitates art, so naturally, with the invention of photography, life would be documented as art. With so much life around it can become easy to be moved and inspired. Creativity, for my soul, is found through passion and connection. Whether it be a connection to people, cultures, or even to art created by others. I am inspired by seeing others express, live, and deal with the human condition. Throughout my photography, these settings for creativity can be found in various places. Whether it be at the skatepark watching my friend challenge their fear and try a new trick, at a food market watching a vendor push to sell fruit with all their might, or at a football game watching fans rise in excitement in a new possession, it is life and the passion for the intricacies that life brings that inspires me to document and create. Whenever I see joy, love, compassion, sadness, or any feeling I am inspired and through my medium of photography am hit with the desire to document. Through my documentation, I feel as if I have built a bridge of connection between my passion and observation of the precious moments in life and connected it to other viewers later. While the style remains more documentary, it is through my perspective, editing, and care for small details through my perspective that I believe classifies my photos as art.
As a skateboarder, skateboarding has given me plenty of principles that I apply to my work and photography. In an artistic sense, I have been able to apply my experience in skateboarding and skateboarding photography capturing motion into other forms of art. While it may be through a long-exposure photo containing shutter drag and displaying the motion of my subject or even in a more action-paced composition, skateboarding has taught me that perfection isn't always the answer, rather that showing emotion and creating a charged image resonates more with me. In a more philosophical means, my passion and hobby of skateboarding taught me that failure will never be the end of your journey as long as you embrace falling and learn how to recover quickly. In photography, this principle has translated to understanding that the process of getting a photo is extremely important to the craft and that messing up and missing your shot isn't the end of the world and instead brings new opportunities to take new photos with a new intent.
