One Olivia Rodrigo lyric that really connects with my experience is from *teenage dream*: **“I’m so sick of seventeen.”** I relate to this lyric because going to college far from home has made me realize how quickly I am growing up. Before college, I was comfortable with my everyday life. I was used to being around my family, friends, and the places I knew. When I decided to go to college far from home, I knew it would be a big change, but I did not realize how emotional it would actually be. When I first left home for college, I felt excited and nervous at the same time. I was excited to have a fresh start and experience new things, but I was also scared because everything was unfamiliar. I had to leave behind the people I was closest to and learn how to live on my own. At first, I thought I would adjust quickly, but there were moments when I really missed home. Sometimes I missed things that seemed so ordinary before, like eating dinner with my family, talking to my friends in person, or just relaxing in my own room. Being far away made me realize how much I appreciated those simple moments. College has also brought challenges that have helped me grow. I have had to learn how to manage my time, take care of myself, make my own decisions, and deal with problems without always having my family nearby. There have been days when I felt overwhelmed or lonely, especially when school became stressful. Sometimes I wished I could just go home for the weekend and forget about everything for a while. However, being far from home has taught me that I am capable of handling more than I thought I could. Even though leaving home has been difficult, it has also been one of my biggest accomplishments. I have met new people, experienced different things, and learned more about myself. I am becoming more independent and confident, even if I still have moments when I doubt myself. I have realized that growing up does not mean suddenly knowing exactly what you are doing. It means learning from your experiences and continuing to move forward even when you are unsure. Olivia Rodrigo’s music reminds me that growing up can be complicated. It can be exciting, stressful, lonely, and rewarding all at once. Going to college far from home has taught me that it is okay to miss my old life while also being excited about my new one. I can miss home and still be proud of myself for leaving it. I may not have everything figured out yet, but I know that this experience is helping me become the person I want to be. In the end, going far from home for college is not just about getting an education; it is also about discovering who I am and learning how to create a life of my own.

I believe that women belong everywhere in the workforce, including industries that have traditionally been dominated by men. The trades industry offers women incredible opportunities to build meaningful careers, develop valuable skills, and become financially independent. As someone who advocates for women in the trades, I believe my role is to encourage women to recognize their abilities, challenge stereotypes, and feel confident pursuing careers in fields where they may not always see themselves represented. One of the most important ways I advocate for women in the trades is by encouraging them to step outside of their comfort zones. Many women may hesitate to enter a trade because they have been told, directly or indirectly, that certain careers are “men’s work.” I believe in challenging that mindset. Whether it is construction, electrical, plumbing, welding, automotive, HVAC, or another skilled trade, success should be based on a person’s dedication, skills, work ethic, and willingness to learn—not their gender. I also believe that representation matters. When women see other women succeeding in the trades, it can help them realize that they have a place there too. I try to be someone who demonstrates that women can be knowledgeable, hardworking, capable, and confident in these industries. By sharing my experiences, supporting other women, and celebrating their accomplishments, I hope to create a sense of community and remind women that they do not have to navigate these careers alone. Advocating for women also means speaking up when women face challenges or unfair assumptions. Women in the trades may sometimes have to work harder to prove themselves or overcome outdated stereotypes about their abilities. I believe in creating an environment where women are respected for the work they do and given the same opportunities to learn, advance, and succeed. I can advocate by offering encouragement, sharing resources, mentoring others, and helping create spaces where women feel comfortable asking questions and developing their skills. Ultimately, my goal is not simply to encourage more women to enter the trades, but to help create an industry where they can build long-term, successful careers. I want women to know that they are capable of learning difficult skills, leading teams, solving problems, and making a lasting impact. By supporting and encouraging women in the trades, I hope to help break down barriers for the next generation. Advocating for women in the trades is about more than proving that women can do the job. It is about creating opportunities, building confidence, and making sure every woman has the chance to discover what she is capable of. I am proud to support women in the trades and to be part of a movement that is helping make these industries more inclusive, diverse, and empowering for everyone.

1. What trade are you pursuing and why are you passionate about it? I am pursuing a career in Manufacturing because I enjoy CNC machining and the process of turning an idea into something real and useful. What I enjoy most is the combination of precision, creativity, and hands-on work that manufacturing requires. I also enjoy working one-on-one with customers and learning about what they need so I can help bring their ideas to life. Manufacturing gives me the opportunity to use both technical skills and creativity while creating something that a customer can be proud of. I am especially interested in custom fabrication because every project can be different and gives me a chance to solve problems and create something unique. 2. What are your future plans after your trade education? After completing my trade education, my goal is to own my own custom fabrication business. I want to build a company that specializes in designing and creating custom products for both businesses and homeowners. Some of the projects I hope to create include custom gates, handrails, business logos, and unique home decorations. My goal is not only to make quality products, but also to work closely with customers throughout the entire process, from the original idea and design to the finished product. Eventually, I hope to grow my business into a large and successful company that can provide opportunities for other people who are interested in manufacturing and fabrication. I want my business to have a reputation for quality workmanship, creativity, and excellent customer service. My trade education will give me the technical knowledge and experience I need to take the first steps toward making that goal a reality. 3. Describe a time in your life when you overcame adversity. How did you work through it? One of the biggest challenges I have faced in pursuing my education was finding a college that offered the Manufacturing program I wanted. My local community college discontinued its Manufacturing program, which meant that the school I had planned on attending was no longer an option. Instead of giving up on my goal, I began looking for other opportunities that would allow me to continue pursuing a career in manufacturing. That search led me to Casper College and its Manufacturing and Automation Technology Program. Choosing this path meant making a major change in my life and attending college more than 1,000 miles away from home. Moving so far away from my family, friends, and community was difficult, but I knew that pursuing the education I wanted was worth the challenge. I had to be willing to step outside of my comfort zone and adapt to a completely new environment. This experience taught me that setbacks do not have to stop me from reaching my goals. When one opportunity disappeared, I looked for another instead of giving up. Moving more than 1,000 miles away has shown me that I am willing to make sacrifices, take risks, and work hard to build the future I want.

Reading has always been one of my favorite ways to escape from everyday life and enter a completely different world. Whenever I open a book, I feel like I am stepping into a new adventure where I can experience different emotions, meet interesting characters, and discover stories that stay with me long after I finish reading. I especially love romance, mystery, and thriller books because each genre gives me something different to enjoy. Romance is one of my favorite genres because I love reading about relationships and the emotions that come with them. Romance stories can be sweet, heartbreaking, exciting, and sometimes even funny. I enjoy watching characters slowly develop feelings for each other and overcome challenges together. These stories remind me that love can take many forms and that relationships often require trust, communication, and understanding. Even when a romance book has a sad or unexpected ending, I usually find myself thinking about the characters and their journey. Mystery books are another reason I love reading. I enjoy trying to solve the mystery before the characters do. When a book includes clues, suspicious characters, and unexpected twists, I become completely absorbed in the story. I like making my own theories and guessing who is responsible before the truth is revealed. Sometimes I think I have everything figured out, only to discover that I was completely wrong. That surprise is one of the most exciting parts of reading mysteries. Thrillers are also exciting because they keep me on the edge of my seat. I love the feeling of not knowing what is going to happen next. A good thriller can make me nervous, curious, and excited all at the same time. The suspense makes it difficult to put the book down because I always want to read just one more chapter. I especially enjoy stories with unexpected plot twists that completely change the way I understand what happened earlier in the book. Reading these genres has also taught me that books can be more than just entertainment. They can help me understand different people, emotions, and situations. Reading has improved my imagination and helped me become more curious about the world around me. It has also given me a way to relax when I need a break from school, work, or everyday responsibilities. Most importantly, reading makes me happy. Whether I am falling in love with the characters in a romance, trying to solve a mystery, or feeling nervous during a thrilling scene, I always find something to enjoy. My love for reading comes from the fact that every book offers a new experience. There are always new stories to discover, and I hope I never run out of books to read.

interest in manufacturing comes from wanting to create something with my own hands and turn an idea into something real. I am especially interested in custom fabrication because it combines creativity, problem-solving, precision, and practical skills. I want a career where I can continue learning, challenge myself, and take pride in the work I produce. One of the biggest obstacles I have faced on my journey was when my local community college discontinued the Manufacturing program I had planned to attend. It was disappointing because I had already started thinking about my future and how that program would help me reach my goals. Instead of letting that setback stop me, I began looking at other colleges and programs that could give me the education and training I needed. That search led me to Casper College, over 1000 miles away from home, where I am now pursuing the Manufacturing and Automation Technology program. Choosing to continue my education at Casper College was an important step for me. It showed me that reaching a goal does not always mean following the path you originally planned. Sometimes you have to adapt, make difficult decisions, and keep moving forward. I am proud that I did not let the loss of my original program discourage me from pursuing manufacturing. My long-term goal is to work in Custom Fabrication. I want to develop the skills and experience necessary to take an idea, understand what is needed to make it work, and fabricate a finished product with quality and precision. I am excited about the possibilities within manufacturing and want to continue growing as a skilled tradesperson throughout my career. I believe skilled work matters because the world depends on people who can build, create, repair, and solve problems. Manufacturing is an important part of our communities and economy, and skilled workers are needed to keep industries moving forward. To me, working in the trades is more than simply having a job. It is an opportunity to develop a valuable skill, create something meaningful, and build a future through hard work. This scholarship would help me continue my education at Casper College by reducing the financial burden of college expenses, including tuition, tools, equipment, and other costs associated with my training. That support would allow me to focus more on developing my skills and preparing for a career in custom fabrication. I am proud of the path I have chosen and proud that I continued moving forward when my original plan changed. My journey has taught me that obstacles do not have to stop you—they can push you to find another way. I am committed to manufacturing, excited about custom fabrication, and determined to build a career I can be proud of.

My education plans include attending Casper College's Manufacturing and Automation Technology program. This program is a two year program where I will learn about different welding and manufacturing machines that I will use in the industry. Upon graduating from this program, I will have obtained an Associates of Applied Science degree in Manufacturing and Automation Technology, as well as a manufacturing technology certificate. After Casper I hope to continue my education at University of Wyoming and acquire a degree in business. I would use the knowledge and skills that I learned from both Casper College and University of Wyoming to start my own future custom fabrication business. My initial professional plans start this summer when I start my internship at Dimension 3 where I will be assisting the owner in designing and building Formula 1 planes. This will allow me to better learn and hone the skills needed to run my own business in custom fabrication and manufacturing skills over all. My ultimate professional goal would be to own and operate my own custom fabrication and welding business. I have already started to move in this direction. I currently own McGuire Metal. I design and create welded horseshoe and rebar art. I’ve also expanded my skills to design and fabricate custom CNC metal art for clients. I sell my art on social media platforms and local vendor art shows. I desire to work alongside clients to design, create and fabricate custom pieces such as, signs for other businesses, custom gates, stairs, handrails, and fabricated metal art pieces. Over the past 4 years I have been involved in the welding, manufacturing, and fabrication side of agriculture. I have been able to be on a welding team 3 of my 4 years here at Chico High, I also have been able to put things into the Silver Dollar Fair to show off my skills I have learned over the years in the Welding CTE pathway. I have been trained on the plasma table and expanded my knowledge on it to the point where I have been able to start selling things I design and cut out through my small business. With all of the skills I have gained, I have started and grown a small business that I take to vendor shows to sell products. I also sell products through social media and word of mouth. Each year I have grown as a welder/manufacturer and an entrepreneur, and grown my passion for it. During my Junior year I was approached by a Chico Sunrise Rotary member about working with them and Pleasant Valley High School on designing and fabricating signs to be displayed on the new fence of the Caper Acres playground, in Chico CA. The art students from PV High design nursery rhyme themed art in Adobe Illustrator and I convert their images into a file that I can upload into the CAD design program, FlashCut. From here I am able to manipulate their drawings so the CNC machine is able to cut them out cleanly. After they are cut out on the CNC machine, I work with the Chico High Interact club on grinding the signs so that they are smooth, clean, and ready to be powder coated. I powder coat the signs to the colors that the designer picked and use adhesive glue to combine the layers into one piece.

I believe I am a good candidate for this scholarship because I have been able to take my skills and put them into creating my own small business. Through this journey, I have found that I am not afraid of hard work, that I am dedicated to my craft, and willing to learn how to use new machines to advance my skills. I am very fortunate to have found my love and passion before I graduate high school. Discovering my passion at such an early age has led me to open my own business where I share my love of art and design with my clients. Running my own business has taught me many skills such as customer service skills, collaborating with clients to make their visions come to life, and marketing myself and my products within my community and social platforms. With that said, that doesn't mean the road that got me here has been smooth sailing. I have also had to learn to work on short deadlines. Learning this lesson at a young age has helped me better prepare myself for my future, and some of the different situations I will have to deal with in customer service. I have been able to create a name for myself in my community. This has led to many volunteer opportunities such as speaking on behalf of the importance of The Trades and Career Tech Ed. I have spoken for several fundraising galas and the local school board. I have also been selected by Chico Sunrise Rotary to collaborate with some digital art students at another local high school, as well as the City of Chico to fabricate metal signs for our local landmark, Caper Acres Park. The signs depict familiar nursery rhymes that align with the play structures of our park. To date, I have helped raise $14,500 by auctioning two signs at the Chico Sunrise Rotary fundraising gala. This collaboration has been an unbelievable honor. I have also featured in a local magazine publication with regards to this community project, as well as, my journey in creating my own small business. I am also excited to share that I will be interning with a local fabricator of F1 planes this summer! I feel incredibly honored to be given such an amazing opportunity that will help learn more about custom fabrication, business and entrepreneurship. Throughout my four years of high school, I have dedicated myself to growing not only as a student, athlete, and welder, but also as a leader within my community. The experiences I’ve gained through athletics, FFA, entrepreneurship, and volunteer work have shaped the person I am today and the goals I hope to pursue in the future. Welding and fabrication quickly became my lifelong passion. Through Chico FFA, the Welding Team, Opening and Closing ceremonies, state and national conferences, and hands-on training, I fell in love with the craftsmanship and creativity that welding requires. Early recognition, such as the Lil Pup Award for being the most improved first-year welder, motivated me to keep pushing myself. Being known as the “Go to Gal” in the shop showed me the value of reliability and initiative. One of the most meaningful honors was being featured in Upgraded Living Magazine in an article titled “Empowered by Welding,” which highlighted how welding gave me confidence and direction. My passion grew into entrepreneurship when I founded McGuire Metal. What began as small craft show displays and social media sales has expanded into custom fabrication projects, including truck bumpers, delivery truck steps, and Little Library structures for the Chico Sunrise Rotary. Running my own business taught me financial responsibility, communication skills, and how to turn creativity into opportunity. More importantly, it allowed me to give back through donations to local auctions, community events, and youth programs. Swimming has always been the foundation of my work ethic. Competing year-round with the North State Narwhals and representing Chico High School has taught me discipline, resilience, and how to push through challenges even when the path ahead feels overwhelming. Becoming a multi-year Section, EAL, and Master Champion required early mornings, late-night practices, and a strong commitment to my team. The Panther Award, given to leaders on the CHS swim team, affirmed my belief that leadership is not about being the fastest, but about uplifting others. These lessons have carried into every other part of my life. Community service has remained central to who I am. From providing welding demonstrations to elementary students, to volunteering at Girls in Manufacturing Camps, to supporting elementary students in the After School Programs for Chico Unified School District, I’ve learned how meaningful it is to inspire younger students—especially girls—to explore trades and hands-on careers. Fabricating nursery rhyme signs for Caper Acres Park has been one of my proudest contributions, knowing that families in my community will enjoy something I built for years to come. Looking ahead, I plan to continue my education in welding and fabrication with the goal of becoming a highly skilled tradeswoman and business owner. This scholarship would support my journey as I work to combine craftsmanship, leadership, and service to create a positive and lasting impact on my community.

It has shown me that with dedication and resourcefulness, it is possible to build something meaningful from the ground up. My business has also provided opportunities to give back to the community by donating items to local auctions, community events, and youth programs. While welding has become my career passion, swimming has always been the foundation of my work ethic. Competing year-round with the North State Narwhals and representing Chico High School has taught me discipline, resilience, and perseverance. The sport demands consistency and determination, with early morning workouts, long practices, and the constant pursuit of improvement. Becoming a multi-year Section, EAL, and Master Champion required countless hours of training and a strong commitment to my team. Swimming also taught me valuable lessons about leadership. Receiving the Panther Award, which is given to leaders on the Chico High School swim team, meant more to me than any medal or record. The award represents athletes who support their teammates, lead by example, and help build a positive team environment. Through swimming, I learned that leadership is not simply about being the fastest or strongest athlete; it is about encouraging others, setting a positive example, and helping teammates believe in their own potential. These lessons have carried into every other part of my life. Community service has always remained central to who I am. I believe that the skills and opportunities I have been given should also be used to help others. One of the ways I have done this is by sharing my passion for welding with younger students. I have provided welding demonstrations for elementary school students and volunteered at Girls in Manufacturing camps, where I helped introduce young girls to careers in the trades. Seeing their excitement and curiosity reminds me how important representation and encouragement can be. If even one young student leaves believing that they can pursue a hands-on career, then the experience has been worthwhile. In addition, I have volunteered with the After School Programs for the Chico Unified School District, supporting younger students and helping create a positive learning environment. Another project that holds special meaning for me was fabricating nursery rhyme signs for Caper Acres Park. Knowing that families and children in my community will enjoy something I built for years to come fills me with pride. Projects like these remind me that welding is not just about metal and tools—it is about creating things that serve and strengthen the community. Looking ahead, I plan to continue my education in welding and fabrication with the goal of becoming a highly skilled tradeswoman and successful business owner. I hope to expand my skills, grow my business, and continue using my work to support my community. This scholarship would help support my educational journey and allow me to continue pursuing my passion. My goal is to combine craftsmanship, leadership, and service to create a positive and lasting impact on the community that has supported me throughout my journey.

Throughout my four years of high school, I have dedicated myself to growing not only as a student, athlete, and welder, but also as a leader within my community. Each experience I have pursued—whether in athletics, FFA, entrepreneurship, or volunteer service—has helped shape my character and strengthen my work ethic. These opportunities have challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, develop new skills, and discover the impact that dedication and leadership can have on both personal success and the well-being of others. Together, they have guided me toward the goals I hope to pursue in the future. Welding and fabrication quickly became more than just a class or extracurricular activity; they became my lifelong passion. Through Chico FFA, the Welding Team, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, state and national conferences, and countless hours of hands-on training in the shop, I discovered the craftsmanship and creativity that welding requires. I was drawn to the idea that raw materials could be transformed into something both functional and meaningful through skill, patience, and determination. Early recognition helped fuel my motivation. Receiving the Lil Pup Award for being the most improved first-year welder showed me that growth comes from persistence and a willingness to learn from mistakes. That recognition inspired me to continue pushing myself to improve each day. As I gained experience in the shop, I also developed a reputation among my peers and instructors as the “Go-to Gal.” Being known for reliability and initiative meant a great deal to me because it reflected the trust others placed in my abilities and work ethic. I enjoyed helping classmates troubleshoot projects, sharing techniques, and contributing to a supportive learning environment. One of the most meaningful honors I received was being featured in Upgraded Living Magazine in an article titled “Empowered by Welding.” The article highlighted how welding helped me build confidence and find direction in my future. Seeing my journey shared with the community reinforced how powerful it can be when young people are encouraged to pursue careers in the skilled trades. My passion for welding eventually grew into entrepreneurship when I founded my small business, McGuire Metal. What started as a simple idea—creating metal items to sell at craft shows and through social media—quickly evolved into something much larger. Over time, I began taking on custom fabrication projects that allowed me to apply my skills in real-world settings. Some of these projects included building truck bumpers, designing steps for delivery trucks, and fabricating Little Library structures for the Chico Sunrise Rotary. Each project presented its own challenges and opportunities to learn. Running my own business has taught me lessons that extend far beyond welding itself. I have learned about financial responsibility, time management, and the importance of clear communication with customers. Balancing school, athletics, and business responsibilities required careful planning and commitment. Most importantly, entrepreneurship has allowed me to turn creativity into opportunity.

My commitment to welding and fabrication has been a crucial piece in the puzzle of my life. Through Chico FFA, the Welding Team, and multiple state and national conferences, I’ve developed technical skills and a passion for welding and fabrication. Those efforts earned recognition such as the “Go to Gal” honor and a feature in Upgraded Living Magazine for my work in welding. As a year-round competitive swimmer and multi-year Section, EAL, and Master Champion, I’ve learned discipline, teamwork, and how to lead others—qualities recognized through awards like the Panther Award and the Lil Pup Award. Entrepreneurship has allowed me to turn creativity into opportunity. As founder of McGuire Metal, I’ve fabricated products for customers, served as a vendor at local craft shows, and completed commissioned projects ranging from small fabricated metal art projects to steel car bumpers. My business also supports my community through donations to local auctions, youth programs, and organizations such as the Chico Sunrise Rotary. Service is at the center of everything I do—whether volunteering at Girls in Manufacturing Camps, providing welding demonstrations to elementary students, or supporting elementary students in the after-school program through Chico Unified School District. These experiences have shaped my goal of continuing to build, create, and uplift others. With this scholarship, I will pursue further education in welding and fabrication, continuing to grow as both a maker and a leader in my community.
