When I was eleven years old, I held my pet miniature schnauzer named Tennessee in my arms as he took his final breath. I took him out for a walk like it was any other day, and suddenly he collapsed on the ground, struggling to breathe before he soon left this world. That moment was not only traumatizing but life-changing. I wasn't upset only because he died; I was upset because I felt helpless as I wasn't able to do anything about it. After that, I knew that I would never want to feel powerless when an animal's life was in danger ever again.
My name is Brennan Thomas, and I am a high school senior aspiring to become a veterinarian and help every animal in the world. My passion for our furry and scaly little friends did not develop overnight. Ever since I was born, animals have always been a part of my life. My childhood room was filled with everything wild and natural: stuffed animals, painted walls, and even a wildlife-themed bed. And of course I would have pets as well. From a young age, I always felt deeply connected to animals and that connection soon grew into deep empathy.
Whenever I am in nature, I feel at peace surrounded by the sounds of the birds, the rodents, the insects and other living creatures. Everything living in nature brings me peace. Animals are one of the reasons humans continue to survive and thrive, and they play a huge role in maintaining balance. I've really developed a respect and admiration for them, which has given me even more of a reason to dedicate my future to helping them.
Losing my dog gave me the motivation I needed to begin the path toward veterinary medicine. Animals have always been a passion of mine, and I realized I wanted to do more than admire them. I once had a dream to befriend every animal that I might meet, which is why I originally wanted to be a zoologist, but because I really care about them, I've changed my path and decided to become a veterinarian instead because I can make a direct difference in their lives. It will be more rewarding to care for them rather than only study them.
To strengthen my experience, I participated in internships in various places such as Alabama and Kentucky. I have also volunteered at an animal shelter and sanctuary, where I learned the type of needs animals have and the importance of making them feel safe and comfortable. I enjoyed these experiences and they confirmed that veterinary medicine is the right path for me.
I understand that veterinarians are not capable of saving every life, but they have always given hope, comfort, and relief to animals and their families and owners. I want to be a vet that does not only treat illnesses but also prevent as much pain as possible for that animal. No one, especially not a child, should feel as powerless and helpless as I felt that day. I hope to not only be the hand that treats animals, but the friend that comforts them and protects them. I will care for animals of all kinds—scaly, furry, or otherwise—and work to make the world a better place for them.
